Tornado season is typically April through June in Ohio where I live. We had our first touch down this morning after a week where we had an over 70 degree day. We already have reason to believe this year's hurricane season will be one of the worst with concerns about how warm the Atlantic Ocean is right now. It's important to know these things so we can prepare. Preparation can be a beautiful outlet for climate distress and allow us to take an active role in our concerns. Here are some things we can all do as we move into Tornado season (followed by wildfire and hurricane season, though those are coming earlier in some parts of the country, too). 1) Have a go bag ready (organizations like the Red Cross have guides for what to include in a go bag) 2) Think through the logistics of sheltering in place or evacuating with your pets (The CDC, American Veterinary Medical Association, and Red Cross have guides and resources for emergency preparedness and pets). 3) Get to know your neighbors, and if you aren't already, engage in your local mutual aid groups. Strong neighbor relationships save lives in disasters. 4) Save the Disaster Distress Helpline number: The Disaster Distress Helpline provides confidential counseling, referrals, and other support, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The debate had a large presence from Civil Society (environmental entities, activist collectives and community leaders), outraged by the city hallโs ineffectiveness in both prevention actions and in responding to emergencies and having any type of planning. A Working Group was created to work on the reinstitution of a municipal fund for Civil Defense and on updating the Porto Alegre Contingency Plan for climate events, w/ public #participation.
A great, fun way to get more involved with climate action is to attend climate events! Climate Collective's Orange County page is now live featuring local and online climate events. We post a diverse selection of events that are fun, interesting, beginner-friendly, and build community. Some examples include nature walks, webinars, festivals, and workshops. ๐ฃ Lobbying for repealing the Utility Tax ๐ฃ Tristan from @climatereality_orangecounty joined Reform & Sustain when we met with the offices of our representatives @senator_umberg & @asmcottie to ask them to repeal the Utility Tax provision in AB 205. Holiday season is upon us which means many things, and in our society, itโs strongly associated with gifts season. Here are a few considerations for giving gifts or builidng your wishlist. Because even if you insist you donโt want gifts, many friends and family still want to gift. Also this holiday season, be gentle with yourself. It is already a busy and stressful time for many. It is okay to be imperfect. It is okay to want things, even material things (after all, itโs the messaging weโre bombarded with our whole lives). So letโs get to it: - 1: Charity! A few ways to go about this. Offer to donate money to a charity of the recipientโs choice, request others to donate to a charity of your choice in lieu of a gift, or gift or request items from companies who donate to charities important to the gift receiver. - 2: Experiences and adventures, especially if they can be shared together. This is a non-material gift, creates lasting memories, and can foster spending time together with the ones you love. You can even repeat the idea year after year and make it a tradition that doesnโt need to be rethought every year. It can even be a shared experience with multiple gift receivers, like if you organize a wine tour for the group. Some other ideas include: nice dinner out; spa day (or even just a massage); or an activity like paintballing, escape room, smash room, hot air balloon ride, or cooking class. Or offer to volunteer or request volunteers for a charity or community event that the recipient is passionate about. - 3: Gift or request used or upcycled items. Not every gift needs to be new. Many secondhand items are often almost new, too, like fun gadgets that the owner never got around to using. These also tend to be cheaper to help save money. Another idea is upcycling jars and making cooking and baking kits, like gingerbread cookie mix - just donโt forget to include the instructions. * continued in caption *
