Happy Wednesday & Brownie’s Day, furriends! 💙 Today is art review day for #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial The piece I’ve chosen is Sheep Grazing, Stonehenge by Richard Tongue. Not much is known of Tongue. He was born in 1795 and lived until 1873, and was a hard-working self-taught amateur artist who chose to focus an art series devoted to Prehistoric and Celtic antiquities. It has been said that Tongue had a long standing fascination with druids and druidic history. Stonehenge is an impressive structure and monument in Wiltshire, United Kingdom. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a very popular tourist destination. Scholars have argued many different functions of Stonehenge, being used as a form of burial ground and/or religious site, to a place of astronomical significance, to name a few. The stones are pointed towards sunrise during Summer solstice and sunset during Winter solstice. Pawpy has visited Stonehenge and found it to be an awe-inspiring place. I think Tongue captured a sense of beauty, significance and also function with his painting. Stonehenge is clearly significant in the painting with the grey of the stones contrasting with the blue sky. Also, the grey clouds somehow connect Stonehenge to sky above in an almost mystical way. A few visitors in the painting show hooman’s curiosity of this strange and wonderful site, conversely painting serves a sense of function with sheep using the land to live their daily lives and graze. I do think Tongue shows the interconnectedness of the monument to nature, the sky, and hoomans and animals on the ground. I think it is a fascinating piece of 19th Century art. Today for #browniesbookcorner we are reviewing: Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett. Summary: Cambridge Professor Emily Wilde, an expert in the study of fairies, travels to a remote village in the far north to document the “Hidden Ones” for her book. More concerned with folkore than people, she manages to offend the entire population of gruff villagers until her most annoying (but also unnaturally handsome and charming) colleague and academic rival Wendell Bambleby arrives on the scene uninvited. There is something odd about Bambleby and Emily has her suspicions but she has a few secrets of her own too. She also manages to stumble into a centuries old dark fae curse that might bring ruin upon them all. We were enthralled by cozy wintery atmosphere; this is a book to read on a chilly day with a blanket and warm beverage. The scholarly approach makes the Fae seem so realistic you will be looking for evidence of fairy doors on your outdoor walks. We loved Emily & Wendell’s grumpy-sunshine relationship and banter. We loved Emily’s character, scholar/scientist first and foremost, practical, unconcerned with appearance and social niceties, not given to being delicate or helpless but still capable of strong emotion and using both knowledge and intuition to inform her decisions. The writing style is similar to Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (but shorter) and A Natural History of Dragons (but with more heart). The Fae in this book are just as dangerous and edgy as the ones in ACOTAR and Folk of the Air series but the romance element is much more understated. We recommend to readers who liked the former more than the latter books. We give this book 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪 (5/5 Cookies)

The first page we discussed was entitled, "FIP is Treatable." 💙 FIP is a deadly disease that was considered a death sentence up until about 5 years ago. FIP frequently strikes young kittens and occasionally adult cats. The drug to treat FIP, known as GS, has not been approved for use in cats in the US. The patent is owned by big pharma, the pharmaceutical company Gilead. Gilead has refused to present it to the FDA for approval. * Desperate pet parents have been forced to seek out helpful organizations who provide the drug to them from overseas sources. 🙏 Guess what? It works!! It has saved the lives of thousands of kitties over the years. Veterinarians can guide its use, but cannot prescribe it or give it legally. Well, that is about to change! 🎉 As of June 1st, compounded GS will be made and sold in the US. The national compounding pharmacy, Stokes, has contracted with a European compounding pharmacy to acquire the rights to produce it here. Most veterinarians know Stokes Pharmacy. I have used it for years. ➡️ On May 10, the FDA announced it will allow the sale of the compounded medication when prescribed by veterinarians for specific cat patients. 😭😭😭 TEARS OF JOY! Happy Wednesday & Brownie’s Day! 💙 This week, I have chosen to review a book for #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial The book I’ve chosen to review is Enchanted Glass by Diana Wynne Jones. Wynne Jones was a prolific fantasy writer, with a multitude of books and stories to her name. Enchanted Glass is a story of finding one’s own inner power and using it for the good of those around you. The two main characters have to come together to face a mysterious foe. In the novel, Jones blends magic into every day life, and has a way of showing the reader that magic is always simmering below this surface, even in every day moments. The main characters go on a journey of self-discovery about how magic effects their lives. Jones’ books are geared towards younger readers, but I do think older readers can find something interesting in the story, too. Using the #cookiesforbrownie system, I would give 🍪🍪🍪🍪 to Enchanted Glass. I am happy to be back on behalf of my brofur Angel Brownie 💙 and my sisfur mentor, Angel Flopsy 🧡 @princess_flopsy_bunny I am honored to review the chronicled adventures and philosophies of a very esteemed gentleman, Pumpkin Popp. I really wish I had met him. Pumpkin was the ruler of a very large domain that included his Meowmy and human family, his four legged siblings, a large army of mice commanded by loyal Mousey, and all humans and beasts as far as the eye could see. He was a benevolent ruler. In fact he was more of a lover than a king. He was a beautiful ginger boy with a heart of gold. 💛 (Swipe) Every word his Meowmy writes about him is full of love and tenderness. Each page speaks of a deep bond in life that has only been enhanced in loss. This little kitty's soul has become part of his Meowmy and she is lovingly sharing him with us. But this is not a sad tale at all!! ~ CARROT 🥕 AND CATNIP 🌱 BREAK ~ Pumpkin's loss is not described in these books, only his love and joy in life. He is alive and well throughout both books! You will laugh at Pumpkin's antics and opinions. For example, he spied a room behind the cold box. He decided to explore it. But, strangely enough he could only walk forward or backward in this room! "Mom, Mom, help me!! I'm trapped! Get the servants and the mouse army to help!!" 🐀🐀🐀 The last chapter in each book is a perfect example of the loving forever home Pumpkin found. But you must read for yourself. 👀 These books are about how much Pumpkin was loved and how loveable he was! My Mommy told me that anyone who has ever loved a fur baby will love these books. Today we have a non-fiction read, from Dame Professor Sue Black, an anthropologist and science communicator. Written in Bone is an exploration of the hooman skeleton, with interesting facts about what the bones do, why, and how this relates to Black’s work on historical grave sites and solving crimes. We found out all sorts of interesting facts from this book (hoomans don’t develop kneecaps until they’re three 🙀🙀), and Black’s writing is engaging and informative without being overly technical. Happy Wednesday & Brownie’s Day, furriends! 💙🌈 Today is #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial and it’s a day for a quote discussion. “Try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” Today’s quote comes from Maya Angelou. Angelou, born in 1928, in St Louis, Missouri, and after working a lot of jobs including fry cook, nightclub performer, and also working in the theatre, Angelou became most famous for her literary and theatrical work. She wrote a great swathe of poetry, books, plays and albums during her years. Many awards have been Angelou during her lifetime, with Pulitzer Prize for her poetry, Grammy awards for her spoken word albums, and she also received the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. During 2022, she was the first African American woman to be featured on a US Quarter, during the run of the American Women Quarters series by the US Mint. Angelou, despite her tough upbringing, prided herself on trying to make the world a better place. I believe through this quote, she wanted people to use their own sense of empathy to give kindness, even when life seems tough. It’s acknowledges life’s struggles but wishes kindness on everyone. Pawpy and I just want to say to everyone thank you so much for your kindness and love. Recently, it was my Angel Sister @princess_flopsy_bunny two year Angelversary and it was a tough day for us. It is called The Girls I’ve Been by Tess Sharpe. It is about Nora 0’Malley a teenage girl. Her mother is a Con Artist and she made her daughter become one too. It starts with Nora going to the bank to meet with her ex boyfriend Wes & her girlfriend Iris. They are going to deposit money that they raised for an animal shelter. Wes is already upset with Nora. But things turn very tense when 2 bank robbers arrive. Nora must use all that she has learned to keep her & her friends safe & to get out of this alive. The books goes back in forth in time to find out how Nora was raised & the cons that her Mother made her pull. It was a fast moving book. I read it in about 4 hours. It also looks like @netflix is making a series with Millie Bobby Brown playing Nora. Hello everyone! I would like to say a big thank you to you all for all the lovely rainbow bridge birthday wishes 💜🌈 Today we are joining #browniesbookcornermemorial @cattiehatter with a book review! Or technically a trilogy of books review! We have read the fantastic Tetley trilogy by @iamtetley 😻 You may be thinking, “but Angel Schro, these books have been out for a while, why are you only reading them now?” I can only refer you to meowmy being slow; she keeps saying she doesn’t read as much as she would like to (sounds like excuses if you ask me) & THEN it took her ages to buy them. Tetley I’m sorry buddy, although it sounds like you are also used to hoomins being somewhat unhelpful at times so I’m sure you understand 😹 I think it is ever so very clever of Tetley to have written books! I very much enjoyed the triple trip into Tetley’s world & mind; you are such an adventurous, quirky & mischievous kitty! 😹 I was particularly excited that the toilet seat box got a mention, & that there was reference to “friends suggesting Tetley need to break a toilet seat to get a new box”. I am one of those friends 😹 I feel special that my suggestion got published! I am sure other friends mentioned similar as well, but hey I am going to take the claim to fame when I can! 😹 swipe to see toilet seat box Tetley on our fridge! Being from the UK we also very much chuckled at talk of your mam’s Yorkshire accent 😹 Now I may be biased but I give Tetley’s books a full 5/5 cookies for Brownie 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪 I nearly deducted half a cookie for Tetley ENJOYING the vacuum cleaner 🙀🙀 but although I would be hiding under the bed with Sid & Ollie, I have to forgive you because it sounds like you have so much fun playing with it 😹 The best thing about Tetley’s books is that the profit goes to cat charity! Tetley has also now got colouring books! 🙀😻 meowmy didn’t buy those yet, she said something about “not buying everything at once”. I don’t really understand. Obviously, Dolly Parton is a world renowned musical artist. Born in 1946 in the town of Pittman Center, Tennessee, and by her own admission, Parton grew up “dirt poor”. But with her innate ability to be charismatic and entertain people with her voice from an early age, Parton, worked hard to raise money for herself and her family. For near enough 60 years, Parton has been an incredibly popular musical artist and also philanthropist, amongst other ventures. Through the Dollywood Foundation, a non-profit organisation, and the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program, thousands of books are given to children in many different countries to help them with their reading and comprehension skills. By 2018, over one hundred million books had been gifted to children. Parton started this cause in tribute to her father, who never learned to read or write. Parton’s quote is simple but so deceptively effective. Hoomans always talk of path they are on. Does the path continue for life? Hoomans should and can create their own paths, create their own future to walk towards. If one doesn’t lead anyway, go on another journey. Again, the quote seems so simple, and in someways it is, but it is such a wonderfully pawsitive one, and one that everyone should never forget. Even if baby steps are all that you can manage. The Puddle Lane series of early readers were Ladybird books and were popular in the early 1980’s . They followed adventures of animals and lots featured little cat furriends 🐈⬛. Meowmy was too olds by then fur them but does remember them ! There was also a tv series of the same name which ran from 1985-1989 . Do any of you remember these little readers ! She loves History & it is about Witches & Vampires. Diana Bishop who is a Yale History of Science Professor and she is doing research at Oxford. Her parents died when she was 7 and she was raised by her Aunt. She is a witch but doesn’t practice. She requests the book Ashmole 782, a book that has been lost for 150 years, Once she touches it her magic is activated. This also causes others that have been searching for the book to realize it has been found. One of those that finds out is Matthew Clairemont who is a Vampire. Witches & Vampires usually don’t mix but they are drawn to each other. Just to let you know this is a very large book of almost 800 pages. There are 3 books in this series. They also made a tv show about it. Have you heard about the Monk & Robot series by Becky Chambers? I'm a fan. This sci-fi fantasy series is about a tea monk named Dex who comes across a robot named Mosscap who asks them, "What do you need and how can I help?" This starts a series of adventures and learning in the wilderness (A Psalm for the Wild-Built) and then as Dex introduces Mosscap to humanity as they travel from town to town (A Prayer for theCrown-Shy). Sweet, funny, and thought-provoking, we highly recommend this series. Both books are novellas and so it won't take you long to get through this. I don't know if Becky Chambers is planning more books, but I hope so! Happy Wednesday & Brownie’s Day! 💙📚 This week, I have chosen to review a book for #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial The book I’ve chosen to review is Mayflower by Kevin Jackson. Kevin Jackson was a writer, essayist and broadcaster and wrote Mayflower as part of a wider series of Seven Ships Maritime History. Mayflower is an interesting read and delves into the reality behind the story that most people know, especially Americans. Jackson does a good job of giving an honest view of how the whole event played out. From the history before the voyage, the stuttering start to the voyage, to the extreme privation during and how Native Americans truly helped the Mayflower voyagers in their hour of severe need. Being a short book as part of a wider series, a criticism is the book is a bit on the short side, and has to omit some information for brevity’s sake. I think the book would be good for anyone whom is looking into the Mayflower story and doesn’t wish to be bombarded with too much information right away. It’s a decent read and a good introduction to the topic. Using the #cookiesforbrownie system, I would give 🍪🍪🍪🍪 to Mayflower. It would be a good stepping stone to more research into the Mayflower story. He isn’t a lawyer, he was in prison, went to rehab for being an alcoholic. He is working at his family’s firm as an investigator. He is at his parents house for his father’s Birthday. His brother John tells him he killed someone, TJ is in disbelief as John is the good son. He asks him who and his tells him a client, he says that he met with him when he found out he was embezzling from the company. He said that he pulled a gun out n him so he threw a rock and hit him in the head. John said he then drove to their parents house. TJ says that they have to go back to where it happened. They leave the dinner & drive to where it happened. There is no car & no body. After this TJ is on the case to find out what happened. There are a lot of twists & turns to get to the answers. I love Lisa Scottoline books & this one did not disappoint. Today Maurice reviews Go as a River by Shelley Read. This book is billed as historical fiction and is a coming of age story of the young daughter of a peach farmer in a small Colorado town about to be obliterated by the building of a dam. It’s a beautifully written tribute to the outdoors, to loss and resilience and human connection. The story and characters are simply portrayed, emotions expressed primarily as action, and this has its own beauty, but sometimes results in long passages of descriptive language where not much actually happens. Hans Christian Andersen, born in 1805, in Odense, Denmark, Andersen grew up in an impoverished family, where he had to work as an apprentice in various jobs to fund a very basic education. It was at shortly after this time, Andersen moved to Copenhagen and discovered his passion for writing and oratory performance. In 1822, Andersen published his first story, and continued writing such amazing works that most people all know, usually from movie adaptations. Happy Wednesday & Brownie’s Day, furriends! 💙📚🎨🖼 Today is art review day for #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial I haven’t presented an art review in a while, so I thought I would, today! The piece I’ve chosen is The Highland Pastures by Peter Graham. Peter Graham was born in the Scottish city of Edinburgh in 1836. Having returned from a holiday in Deeside, Graham felt inspired to capture landscapes and all the nature that is a part of it. His work earned him high praise and elected status of Honarary Member at Royal Scottish Academy and also an Associate position of the Royal Academy in London in 1877. His work has been and still is shown in different parts of the UK, from Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, National Museum of Wales & Guildhall Art Gallery in the City of London. With his painting, I think Graham truly understood the rugged and incredible landscape of the Scottish Highlands. The Highland Cows, or Coos, as they are known, have a tough yet majestic aura to them. They understand their surroundings and are equipped to live in these challenging pastures and craggy moors. There is a certain nobility within this painting and although Graham doesn’t shy away from depicting the difficulty of life within nature in the Scottish Highlands, he shows a real reverence and respect for the Highland Coos and their environment. She lives in Chicago and her editor Faye tells her she should go stay at her family ranch to get a better idea about ranch life for her writing. She doesn’t want to go but says she will if she can bring her Corgi Gladys. She makes the drive to Montana and meets Faye’s brother Luke who reminds her of the Cowboy in her books Duke, she has decided to channel her inner Sassy who is the heroine in her books. This was a fun quick reading book. I loved the characters especially Gladys the Corgi. One of Brownie's public legacies is Brownie's Book Corner Memorial (BBCM) 📚 #browniesbookcornermemorial Thank you for posting a review today or visiting our reviewers. They have some great ideas to share! Shortly after their passing, Angel Brownie and Angel Flopsy, @princess_flopsy_bunny one of our founding members, led me to a little lost bunny in an urban park in Philadelphia. That bunny became our spirited, little Diva, Penny. Penny became quite the reader and has done 3 reviews for BBCM. Today, I have asked her to do a little research and report on an intriguing tale. Penny, please describe your findings. 8️⃣🐈8️⃣ One day in 1952, a skinny tabby cat walked into a 6th grade classroom in Los Angeles and stayed for 16 years. This persistent kitty adopted the children in the class, and they adopted him. They called him Room 8, and there he stayed. Year after year, successive 6th graders sheltered him, fed him, cared for him, answered his fan mail, worried about him when he was sick, and loved him. Many years later, but before his death at the age off 22, the school principal and one of the teachers wrote his story, A Cat Called Room 8 (1966) by Virginia Finley and Beverly Mason. This book is now out of print but is experiencing a resurgence in interest due to social media posts (like this one). In January of 2024, a copy of the book was sold on Ebay for $1,000. The good news is that you can read it for free on the Internet Archive. www.archive.org Not only is the story a positive one of love for animals by children, but also by teachers and administrators! The greater charm of this book is its historicity. If you thought love and care for cats was just a modern day phenomenon, this book proves not much has changed in the last 70 years. Happy Wednesday & Brownie’s Day! 💙🌈 This week, I have chosen to review a book for #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial The book I’ve chosen to review is The Snail and the Whale written by Julia Donaldson & illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Firstly, today’s book is primarily aimed for children, but I shall argue that adults would find it very sweet too. Donaldson and Scheffler have produced some wonderful books in collaboration over the years and The Snail and the Whale is most definitely one of those. It’s a tail of two completely different species coming together to have an adventure of a lifetime. That said, although both main characters are different, I think the book shows how interconnected nature is. Our bonds with each other aren’t that different, when we really look at it. We are all together. Taking on a rhyming style of telling the story, the book has won numerous awards over the years and was even made into various forms of stage and media work. A stage play toured the world from 2012 onwards and the story was even made into a short film, which is also beautiful. As you can tell, I love the story, and its themes, how it shows our interconnectedness and the art of the book is just wonderful. Pawpy and I love the book. Will Trent & Medical Examiner Sara Linton are on their way to help & meet up with the bombers. Will is hurt & they abduct Sara. The race is on to find Sara and what the bombers are up to. Do you hear the call of the wild? What is your true desire - to control the wild, or submit to it? 🐾 Joining #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial @cattiehatter for tomorrow with a review of "Troll: A Love Story" by Finnish writer Johanna Sinisalo. This is a book like no other. Mikael finds a scared and weak troll cub outside his apartment and decides to take it home. In a way, this is a classic fairy tale set in a contemporary landscape, with a dark and grown up twist. The blonde princess coming face to face with her wild side is here exchanged for a young man with golden cherub curls, navigating the queer scenes of a modern Finnish city, with nightly rendezvous in vet labs and downing Guinness after Guinness at the local gay bar. "Troll" is a fast and easy read, but make no mistake - it is a story that pierces the soul and fascinates the mind. It is the kind of book that will touch you to tears, but that also has the kind of dark and sarcastic humor that, if you are anything like me, will occasionally have you cry with laughter too (for example there is an epic dialogue between two men at the aforementioned bar involving the names of the archangels, of which one is - you guessed it - good old Anael 😹). Sinisalo's language flows like magic, tugging on your heartstrings and leading you on dark but beautiful paths you never noticed before. And all the while, the central themes running through the story and the sub-stories are control vs submission, and the way we treat animals, nature, and each other, assuming our own superiority. There are few obvious answers here, and few innocent characters. The main protagonist certainly isn't one of them. Also, as a bonus, I cannot shake the feeling that the troll is loosely based on a feral cat. It even purrs. 🥰 I give "Troll" 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪 #CookiesForBrownie . I wish everyone would read this excellent book. Born on 1871 in Paris, Proust was involved in writing and also publishing from an early age. He wrote literary reviews in his early twenties. The author Graham Greene, who wrote such classic as Brighton Rock and Our Man in Havana, called Proust “greatest novelist of the Twentieth century.” I do love the quote as I think Proust, wants to show how good and decent furriends can lift you up. They can eliminate the bad in your life, the weeds, and can replace them with beautiful flowers and foliage. I think Proust, wants us not to feel sad about the things we haven’t got in our lives, but appreciate the kindness and love we have in lives already. To be appreciative of those who make our days and lives better with their compassion and consideration. This is the First Book in the Three Sisters Trilogy. The book book takes place on the fictional Three Sisters Island off the coast of Boston MA. Nell Channing left her abusive husband and arrived on Three Sisters Island, She finds a job in a bookstore cafe and meets Mia. She finds out there is a curse on the Island and it can only be broken by the descendants of The Three Sisters, the witches, who settled the Island back in 1692. I loved this book. I love books about witches. I loved the story. Although Dobby is also the Mayor of Snoozytown, he fulfills his Presidential duties admirably. Today's BBCM post is dedicated to Dobby. 💙 You may have heard the phrase, "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." Well, what happens in Dobbington Castle stays in Dobbington Castle. Except....Meowmy got a little inside information from an unnamed source. 🐈⬛️🪽 1️⃣ The evening started off very sedately. Everyone mingled while sipping a cup of tea.☕️ (See comments for IDs.) 2️⃣ Then "someone" brought out a box of innocent looking bananas.🍌 3️⃣ The bananas were a big success. 4️⃣ But they did make everyone very hungry. The feast was magnificent. 5️⃣ Then everyone retired to the study for after dinner drinks and some serious discussion.🍷 The topic turned from literature to hoomans. In particular, how to properly train your hoomans to get what you want. Dobby: I look at Pawpy with big dreamy eyes and he let's me do whatever I want. Zora: I give Meowmy snuggles and she let's me have treats. Penny: Huh? I don't understand. 🐰 I always do whatever I want. What are you talking about? 6️⃣ The drinks flowed and then somebody brought in beer and pizza. Eventually, the conversation became heated.🔥 7️⃣ Some vases got knocked over. Then some furniture. There was no climbing the bookcases this year, but some managed to fall off their shelves anyway. 📚 8️⃣ When everyone retired to their rooms for the night, I am afraid the study, the library, the formal living room, the lounge and the dining room were in shambles. How did that happen? 9️⃣ But no matter, the cleaning crew came in overnight.🧹 🔟 All was back to normal in the morning. Everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable time! Happy Wednesday & Brownie’s Day! 😻💙 This week, I have chosen to review a book for #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial This book is The Mist by Stephen King. With my Spooky Birthday coming up, I thought why not review a King book? As you all know, Stephen King is a prolific fiction writer, mostly of horror, suspense and supernatural fiction, but he has gone into other genres too. He has also written screenplays, been an actor, producer and director of movies in his time too. Many of King’s works have been made into films and TV series, with the book I am reviewing today being made into a movie starring Thomas Jane in 2007. The Mist has several themes running through it. One of the main themes of the book is fear, and what fear does to people’s ability to rationalise the world around them. Some of the characters in the book conduct themselves in fanatical and aggressive ways with irrational intentions. It also features ways in which hoomans react or think about the unknown. The mist within the novel becomes a strong character in itself, that induces a creeping tension within the story. The novel also examines how isolation can have an effect on people even in familiar places. The novel and movie are both interesting, even if you aren’t a big King fan. My Mom read the book around the time the movie came out. She said it was a great book so I decided to read it too. It is a memoir about the author Cheryl Strayed. This is the story of how she struggled with the death of her Mother, her marriage that was failing as well as some other bad lifestyle choices. She decides to hike the Pacific Crest Trail with no hiking experience all by herself. She hiked 1100 miles of it. She starts in the Mojave Desert. She tells about all her experiences & the people she meets along the way. Happy Wednesday & Brownie’s Day! 💙📚🎨🖼 This week, I have chosen to review a book for #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial This book is Pete the Cat’s Groovy Guide to Life by Kimberly & James Dean. Kimberly & James Dean have created a sweet book for children (mainly) to gain inspiration from historical figures and apply it to the world around them. As you all know we love books and quotations here at Brownie’s Book Corner and this book is a beautiful combination of both! There is so much sweet pictures in the book too. It is a children’s book, but I would argue that some of the quotes within definitely apply the adult hoomans and their lives too. If you ever feel you’re lacking in inspiration or even confidence in your life, this book would definitely change that. The art, quotes and approach of the book is beautiful and helpful. Plus, obviously Pete the Cat is totally cattacular, I think you would agree, furriends?! Pete the Cat stars in many books from the Deans, and if they are like Groovy Guide to Life, then they will all be so cute and sweet, and also have a wonderful message. Every month before Angel Brownie passed away, he drove his big blue bus, Brownie's Bookmobile, 🚍 #browniesbookmobile to one of his favorite animal rescues. Brownie's Book Corner Memorial (BBCM) 📚 #browniesbookcornermemorial is continuing this tradition. Since Brownie passed away in June of 2022, the Bookmobile has visited Tabby's Place in NJ and Austin Pets Alive! in TX. In 2023, we took the Bookmobile to Milo's Sanctuary (CA), Special Needs Older Rabbits Sanctuary (SNORS) in the UK, Kitten Rescue in Los Angeles (CA) and Feral Cat Foundation in Alsmo (CA). Today, I recruited one of Brownie's good friends @thetobe913 to drive the big blue bus to Puppy Kitty NYCity (PKNYC). Thank you Toby!! @puppykittynycity www.puppykittynyc.org Brownie liked to feature one of the rescue's kitties for adoption. As of this writing, PKNYC has 178 adoptable animals on its website. It's impossible to pick one or two. If you live in the area, please have a look. If you cannot adopt, please share the post instead, especially if you live nearby. Of course, make a contribution if you can! The first statement on Puppy Kitty NYCity's website is, "We are on a mission to save homeless, sick and dying animals." 🙏🙏🙏 They accomplish this by striving to never say no to a needy animal. Those requiring medical care receive it. Their focus is rescuing homeless animals from the streets of NYC. They maintain an active TNR program to help control the feline population. The organization relies primarily on its large network of fosters to care for its adoptable animals. A foster home is a lifesaver!! They also maintain a small shelter in Queens, NY. Animals who are not adoptable, but who cannot be returned to a safe feral colony are placed in pairs in outside environments as "working cats." They earn their keep by hunting rodents on farms, in stables and barns, in nurseries and warehouses. If you have such a property, anywhere in the world, consider adding such a cat, along with a companion cat. NYC is a very big place with lots of homeless animals. THE LAST WORD by Taylor Adams is about a woman who leaves a bad review of a horror novel online and then may or not be stalked by the author...There is more to it, but if that intrigues you, you'll have to read the book to find out what else happens! This is a book for readers who love a fun thriller! Meowm and I couldn't put it down and had lots of fun trying to guess what would happen next. Mommie went way out of her comfort zone when reading The Housemaid by Freida McFadden and we are reviewing it for #browniesbookcornermemorial in honor of Founder Brownie @cattiehatter This is a psychological thriller, not for you wee kitties or pups! “From behind closed doors, she sees everything” lures the reader in on the cover. Twists and turns as you delve into the story of a maid “hired” to keep the household in order. It certainly is a page turner with characters who certainly aren’t quite what they appear to be! Happy Wednesday & Brownie’s Day! 💙🌈📚 This week, I have chosen to review a beautiful book for #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial This book is Tubby Custard by Michelle Camm. Tubby Custard was a sweet doggy who’s first Mumma was very ill. Sadly, she had to give him up to a Staffy charity called @seniorstaffyclub Through this charity, Camm and her family found Tubby Custard, applied to be his forever pawrents and eventually adopted him. The book is very sweet and tells a wonderful story of hope and love. Tubby Custard was in a situation that he didn’t quite understand and was very scared, but Camm and her family gave him a loving home. This book documents Tubby Custard’s journey from his birth, saying goodbye to his first Mumma, through to his subsequent life with his wonderful family. Tubby Custard sadly had to say goodbye to his family last year and travel over the Rainbow Bridge, but the book is a testament to him and his family. It’s a book of how love and understanding can truly change lives for the better. It’s about Camp Alpine Lake in Vermont, where rich kids go. Goldie Easton is not rich, but her parents work at the camp so she has been going there since she was 9. This Summer her and her two best friends Imogen & Ava are camp Counselors. They have vowed to tell each other everything, but Goldie hasn’t told her friends what has happened this past school year. She has been looking forward to seeing them & enjoying the Summer like they always have. But then there is a death at the Lake & she finds out she isn’t the only one with secrets. Happy Brownie's Day! 💙 Here is Angel Brownie in 2021 celebrating #onewhitewhiskerwednesday For the longest time, Brownie had TWO white whiskers. Then one mysteriously disappeared. 🙀 He began growing a second white whisker. It was only half the length of a regular whisker by the time he passed away. Many black kitties, but not all, will shed their black whiskers as they age and replace them with white ones. These kitties have a distinguished older gentleman look. By the time Brownie's brofur, Harry, passed away at 18 and a half, every black whisker was replaced by a long, luxurious white one. 🐈⬛️🐈⬛️🐈⬛️🐈⬛️🐈⬛️🐈⬛️🐈⬛️🐈⬛️ Thank you my precious Angel Eeyore @where_is_eeyores_tail for your very handsome Valentine's Day card. ❤️ I am so happy to have met you through your Meowmy. Happy Valentine's & Brownie’s Day, furriends! ❤ This week, I have chosen to review a book for #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial The book is actually a play that has been transcribed. It’s The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. Tennessee Williams was born Thomas Lanier Williams III in 1911, Columbus, Mississippi. During his time, Williams wrote many plays that still get produced and resonate with many people. Some of the these plays are the one I’m reviewing today, also A Streetcar Named Desire & Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. He was also a writer of short stories and poetry. It was be fair to say, Williams is probably considered an American legend in the literary world and received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama on several occasions. The Glass Menagerie is a story that Williams draws from his life growing up and is one of high drama, but relatable human characters, with flaws just like every human. The play is one of a family which struggles financially in their lives, but also a story of an ever changing world and each character of the family, wanting to pull the family in different directions, or get away from the family. Frustrations and resentment ensue, as the characters find themselves butting heads many times. The ending is bittersweet too. It is a very real human ending, I would argue. Williams really created a play that is dramatic, yet rooted in very real times and feelings. Using the #cookiesforbrownie system, I would give 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪 to The Glass Menagerie. Happy Brownie's Day! 💙 Oh wait. Happy Valentine's Day too. 💗 Today, we celebrate love of all kinds, not just romantic love. So Angel Brownie and I decided to review a book about love. All About Love: New Visions by bell hooks (lower case intended by author), 2001 bell hooks is the pseudonym of Gloria Jean Watkins. Author, academic and social critic, Watkins penned 40 books revolving around the intersection of class, gender and race. All About Love really is about all types of love. The often failed love of parents for their children lays the groundwork for what Watkins calls the widespread feeling of lovelessness in contempirary society. Often we cannot love. Do we even know what love is? Could you define love? Using the widely respected definitions of love from M. Scott Peck and Erich Fromm, Watkins posits that this is very far from our popular notions of love. Peck: Love is "the will to extend one's self for the purpose of nurturing one's own or another's spiritual growth." ❤️ Fromm: Love is "the active concern for the life and the growth of that which we love." ❤️ Watkins argues that the structures of patriarchy, informed by class imperatives, prevent men and women from shedding the control that "love" in the modern world entails. Bringing a "love ethic" to your own self-development is a necessary first step to finding love in other relationships. Watkins recommends bringing a "love ethic" to all relationships, including the wider community. In this way, we prepare to love romantically, which is the most difficult love. ❤️ This book is much more complex than it first appears. Academic psychology, politics, feminism and race theory are presented for the lay audience. It felt a bit dated because, whether well-founded or not, the politics of patriarchy has lost some of its urgency. Well, Angel Brownie may be able to give the kind of love that Peck and Fromm speak of, but how many hoomans can? At least it is something to which they can aspire. Happy Wednesday & Brownie’s Day! 💙🌈 This week, I have chosen to review a book for #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial The book is Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. Jane Austen, born in 1775, in Hampshire, UK was and is a renowned and hugely celebrated author of many famous works. During her time, Austen used her work to socially critique the societal norms of the day in the UK. Austen, through her works, wasn’t afraid of questioning women’s perceived place with society at the time. Northanger Abbey was published in 1917, which was posthumously printed in winter of that year. Austen passed away earlier in the year. There are many themes within the novel, and I will highlight a few. Being a coming-of-age novel, the themes of sincerity and also hypocrisy come into play all too often in the lead character Catherine’s life. Catherine, being a young person, learns to navigate the adult world where sincerity sometimes is at a premium. With experience, she understands that thinking for yourself is something to be prized and is important for truly understanding the world and all the upsides and pitfalls of it. As said previously, Austen examines societal idiosyncrasies when it comes to wealth and status within this novel. Austen almost parodies this with characters who are wealthy, and assume they are respectable, but have no decorum. From being an 18th century writer, I would argue Austen really pushed boundaries with her work and really asked a lot of questions of society, in an accessible way for the time. Happy Brownie’s Day! @cattiehatter I am reviewing another James Patterson Alex Cross Book Fear No Evil. The book starts with a CIA agent being tortured & forced to write a confession & name other people. Dr Alex Cross & his friend Detective John Sampson are supposed to go on a trip to the Back Country of Montana when they receive calls about the body of the CIA with her confession & a note that says Traitor. Then Alex receives a text about what his family has been doing & the body in the garage it is signed M. Alex’s Wife Bree has started a new job & is flying to Paris, Then another Agent is killed in Los Angeles and Alex flies there. Who is M, why are they killing Agents with ties to a Mexican Drug Cartel. Well, I had to find out. I had to keep reading to find out the answers. This book was a longer than the last one, but still easy to read. I also saw that there is going to be a series about the books called Cross & Aldis Hodge who we love is going to be Alex Cross. Happy Wednesday & Brownie’s Day, furriends! 📚💙 Today is #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial and it’s time for a quote discussion. “Life is not about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” Today’s quote is quite a well known one that has been attributed to George Bernard Shaw. Shaw, was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1856, but moved to London in 1876 to try his luck in writing circles. At first, he struggled to establish himself as a writer and novelist but after a period of self-education and dedication, he started to become a known theatre critic in the city. Shaw is probably best known for the play Pygmalion, which debuted in 1913. Pygmalion eventually was adapted into the 1956 stage musical My Fair Lady. I think today’s quote is an interesting one. It is attributed to Shaw but may not necessarily be from him. There have been claims that it may have originally been coined, albeit slightly different wording, by the Chicago Sun-Times journalist Sydney J. Harris. The quote is a lean towards the potential in all of us to be industrious in our lives. In being who we wish to be. I think sometimes hoomans forget that they can do so much in life and so many things that create memories. One could argue that the quote is born out of courage, too. Happy Brownie’s Day 💙 @cattiehatter #browniesbookcornermemorial Since my Mom still has Christmas decorations up, I thought that i would stay with the Christmas Theme. So today, I am reviewing Merry Christmas Alex Cross by James Patterson. I have never read any of the Alex Cross Books, but my Mom has seen the movies. The book starts on Christmas Eve & Detective Alex Cross is at a church to find the thief who is stealing from the poor box. He catches the thief than goes to his Nana Mama’s house. She isn’t happy he is late. Then he receives a call about a man holding his ex wife, her new husband, his kids, and a neighbor hostage. Alex’s family is not happy he is leaving to go to a dangerous situation on Christmas Eve. This book was very fast reading & actually had a couple storylines. I really enjoyed it. Will definitely read more of the series. Happy Brownie's Day! 💙 Here is Jackie's official introduction to the COI community! A few months after sweet Rosie passed away, but while I still had my beloved Bobby, I got a call from my former vet clinic. "Do you know of anyone who would want a cute, chubby kitty? Come over and look at her." Her story was compelling. When I got there, I took the photo in the third slide. The note was on a clipboard attached to her enclosure. The note reads, "I was evicted from my apartment. I cannot take care of or feed her.... My name is Jackie, 10 years old, I am shy and nice. Please take care of me." It was July 25, 2023. It was a warm day but pouring rain. The vet techs told me they found her in a carrier in the rain, outside the clinic. They noticed a man lingering there earlier, before they found her. I went to see her. Without meeting her, I knew I would take her. She came home with me that day. It took a few months for her to become fully integrated into the Hatter clan. She feels at home now. In spite of her former pet parent declaring that he could not feed her, she was quite overweight. In the last 6 months, she has lost about 3 pounds, just by being offered 2 normal meals each day. She is shy and nice as the note claimed. I believe my black kitty, 🐈⬛️ David, is wary of her partly because of her size, and partly because of her early and frequent hissing at him. Penny the bunny 🐇 is undaunted by any new creature. Penny runs in circles, and from room to room no matter what. Jackie was initially scared of this little whirlwind of a creature. She put her paw up to swat a few times, but never hurt Penny, nor detered her from her missions. Bobby 🐕 respected Jackie. She was just another one of the many feline residents he had come to know over the years. Because he respected her right to be there, she respected him as the boss of the clowder that he always was. It was a win-win situation. Unfortunately, he did not get a chance to become a close friend to Jackie, the way he was with both Rosie and Penny.🌈 The clowder* is rather small now and has lost its boss. But Jackie is just fine with that. She has found her forever home. 🐈 🤎

Today's Brownie's Book Corner Memorial 📚 #browniesbookcornermemorial will discuss a quotation from a famous poem. The poem is about one of the many ways comfort can be given to the grieving. We are dedicating our post today to one of our regular reviewers, Angel Max @shadow_and_max08 Today is Angel Max's one year Angelversary. We miss him dearly. Max's earthly presence is a cherished memory, a paw print, a clipping of fur, his favorite toys, his ashes. But that is just his earthly presence. 💫 How much do things change when we lose a loved one? Things change beyond measure. For some, our whole world falls apart when we lose a cherished pet or a human loved one. Life clearly will never be the same for those who remain. But consider this beautiful poem by Henry Scott-Holland, first delivered in a eulogy in 1910. "Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. ..... Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident?" Can two things be true at once? Irrevocable change and certain continuity. You will know the answer if you have experienced the loss of a loved one. The body of an ex cop is discovered a construction site. The medical examiner Sara Linton, can’t say too much about her, because the books are different that the tv series, realizes that all the blood does not belong to the victim. There are bloody footprints that belong to a woman, who after losing that much blood will die soon if they don’t find her. The construction site belongs to a wealthy athlete, who Will believes has already gotten away with Rape. The race is on to find the injured woman & who killed the ex cop. I can’t say too much about it, but Betty is definitely in it. Happy Wednesday & Brownie’s Day, furriends! 💙🌈 Today is art review day for #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial The piece of art I’ve chosen today is Mount (Mont) Orgueil by Forrest Hewit. Forrest Hewit was born in Salford, Greater Manchester, UK in 1870. Throughout his career, Hewit had a long association with MAFA (Manchester Academy of Fine Arts). His primary work when painting was landscapes, in the UK and it’s Crown Dependencies, and also continental Europe. Hewit also spent much time working as Director and Vice-Chairman of the Calico Printers’ Association, based in Manchester, where Hewit worked hard to help less well off painters who wanted to pursue the craft. If you have ever visited or seen pictures of Mont Orgueil, the castle has an imposing presence in Gorey Harbour in Jersey. It has been a significant defence for Jersey’s east coast going back centuries. But, with that said, Hewit captures the significance of the castle but also captures beautiful Gorey village around it. Hewit has a deft way of making Mont Orgueil blend almost seamlessly into the surrounding nature, making a part of the very nature of Gorey. I will speculate and say Hewit knew of the importance of Mont Orgueil to the island of Jersey and truly painted it with an adroit touch and heartfelt understanding. This is an international group of cat pawrents who love to make cocktails! I and Angel Max have posted some cocktails we have hosted in the past. I know that they are making a movie about the book so I thought I better read it. It starts off with Lily on a Rooftop Deck thinking about the very short Eulogy she gave for her Father’s Funeral & then left it. A man who is upset comes out on the rooftop also, he is kicking some chairs, he doesn’t see Lily at first. Then he does see her. She finds out his name is Ryle, he is a Neurosurgeon & he lost a patient who was a little boy who was accidentally shot by his brother. Lily thinks Ryle is beautiful. He lives in the building that they are on. He says he has never seen her She tells him that her building has only 3 stories so she went to Google Earth to find a good rooftop. The both talk about their day, and he says some things to Her that I can’t repeat & go their separate ways. The books goes back in time by way of Lily reading her journals from when she was a kid. You find out that her Dad was abusive to her Mom & she wanted her Mom to leave her Dad. I don’t want to give too much of the story away. It was very fast reading. I read it again in about 4 hours. There were some tears involved. Happy Wednesday & Brownie’s Day! 💙🌈 This is my first book review of 2024 for #BrowniesBookCornerMemorial I just want to say thank you very much to all those who attended and promoted the recent 3rd Anniversary of The Book Corner! It was a magical time at Hemmingway House in Key West, Fl. Now, for my review. The Book I’ve chosen is Birdsong by Katya Balen. Balen is an author of children’s fiction and also co-founded the charity Mainspring Arts, which works intently to make the arts inclusive, diverse and accessible for all people of all backgrounds and neurodiversity. Birdsong is a short novella aimed towards older children but I would say it is for all ages. The book has many themes and finding strength and hope in times of crisis or predicament is a strong theme. I would also say the book has a strong sense of you never know where positive influence may next come from. Without giving anything away, the character of Annie finds hope and her dreams again from an unusual source. The book is also one of not being afraid to ask for support from others. It has some sad moments but ultimately Birdsong is a story of hope and never giving up, even when things seem hopeless. Using the #cookiesforbrownie system, I would give 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪 to Birdsong, as it is a great story, and I think is one for everyone, not just older children.
