I repeatedly explain to her that it’s my responsibility to keep her safe, healthy, and happy — and in that order. That also means that sometimes we must forgo the happy for the safety (which includes the safety of others) or the healthy. She’s such an easy-going and easy-maintenance dog in so many ways, but her past has done a number on her and it’s a constant challenge to manage. She needs a decently high level of mental stimulation and physical exertion (don’t we all?), but it’s quite specific and challenging with her, which means I spend a lot of time and effort trying to find places that fulfill her needs.
