Our provincial flower, the western flowering dogwood (Cornus nuttallii), is dotting the landscape. Its creamy petals and green center as well as prolific flowering makes it really stand out. I am not aware of many people using this one medicinally or nutritionally in this day and age, however there is some evidence of Indigenous traditional medicinal uses with the root and bark. It can be applied to the skin to treat wounds and a decoction can be used as a tonic for strength. It appears this plant was also for utility like tool making or using its tannins for preservation or dye. Pacific dogwood (Cornus nuttallii) is a lovely slender and tall tree that grows mostly at the edge of woods and forests. The ones in the woodsy parts of the Seattle parks are very tall, and the flowers are way overhead (!) so I think I'm lucky if there are any branches low enough for me to take a photo of the flowers. Here we have a "flower", with the greenish white bracts (four to seven, this one has six) surrounding the clump of flower buds which will open someday. Probably not too soon because of the cool weather. This dogwood's bracts range from this greenish color to pale pink. The right tree, in the right place. Careful planning is necessary in all yards and gardens, no matter the size. This #incensecedar is quite large for this typical American suburban yard. It's nice that it is in a corner which gives it plenty of room to spread and you can still enjoy planting a garden and looking out your front window. The problem with this location is that it lives along the street where it may be under power lines and is surrounded by asphalt on that side; poor thing. The neighbors may or may not be sympathetic to your tree, resulting in a butchering albeit on their property, but it will destroy the asthetics. Think about the longevity and the lifespan of your trees; will the people that live there in 2 generations enjoy your selection? When I first arrived in Vancouver I saw that a fairly common street tree was a large flowering Dogwood and my initial thoughts was that it was the Pacific Flowering Dogwood, Cornus nuttallii. Turns out the real Pacific Dogwood is quite susceptible to fungal diseases and is not as robust as many of it's hybrids with Cornus florida. The city of Vancouver lists many types of Cornus for it's street tree database with C. kousa and Eddies White Wonder being the most numerous. Photo 5: I believe this is a true Cornus nuttallii. I saw a couple in more wild settings but was never close enough to get a decent photo. It is very similar looking to C. florida and mostly flowers before the leaves appear. It can be distinguished from Eddies with Wonder as it usually has 5 or 6 bracts where as most of the hybrids have 4. 6&7: Cornus kousa 'Satomi' seen at the Van Dusen Botanic Gardens in Vancouver. Cornus kousa was very popular as a street tree in Vancouver and took over flowering when the Eddies White Wonders were finishing 8-10: A beautiful Cornus capitata in coastal Dublin. I thought it was a kousa but when it didn't drop it's leaves in Winter, I saw that it was the Himalayan capitata. It was a big day here at Campiello Maurizio, the Garden of One-of-Each-ee. @greenbeinggardens came over and ripped out the massive Lonicera hedge. In its place I have a small arboretum of amazing trees from @cistusnursery. I grew several from seed, and two more are special selections of natives made by Sean. Preston picked out a Buxus species for me sometime ago. Of course they’re crammed in together, but I don’t care. They’re finally out of their pots and on their way. Additionally, all tilted trees have been staked. The “Dogwood People,” as they were called, were very kind; they protected babies and took care of the old and infirm. From Western folklore, it is said that Jesus had a special love for Dogwood trees which had been the size of oak and other forest trees at that time. So firm and strong was the tree that it was chosen for the cross.
