A desert black swallowtail waiting for the sunrise on a California native plant called Baja Fairy Duster (Calliandra californica) People have used the roots of Calliandra. californica as red dye for leather. Folk decoctions from the Baja fairy duster have been used to treat cystitis, kidney ache, urethritis, prostate inflammation, cramps, fever, and toothache. This plant is heat & drought hardy and has survived many years of neglect from yours truly 😄 #butterfly #nativeflora #pollinators #mothernature #mariposas #vlinder #chrysalis #butterfliesofinstagram ##バタフライ #Californianativeplants #pollinatorfriendly #raisingbutterflies #americanbutterfly #perhonen #motyl #anaheimhillsbuzz #蝴蝶 #Calliandra #calflora #sommerfugl #fjäril #anaheimhillsbutterflies #California #schmetterlinge #butterflylovers #blackswallowtail #butterfliesoftheworld #desertblackswallowtail #papiliopolyxenes #bajafairyduster

Behold Nemacladus rubescens, the desert threadplant! Nearly invisible against the sandy, gravelly soils it inhabits, this diminutive desert-dweller is quite the charmer up close, and I mean really up close—each flower is 2-3mm across. @bothrops_et_al and I spent forever trying to find these, and in the final hour before I had to leave for home, we managed to spot a few in flower. I think I cried a little. We almost certainly passed by more and just missed them; in fact, looking through my other photos I noticed some budding ones in some shots of Diplacus bigelovii. I think this is probably one of those plants that I might never have noticed on my own unless I was literally crawling on all fours actively looking for tiny desert organisms; they blend in so well. It's honestly astonishing how much near-invisible life suddenly comes into focus when you decide to get down on your knees and simply observe. The way they appear from seemingly nothing—it's like suddenly finding the right words to voice what you've been meaning to say. They were always there, though maybe you didn't know until they were right in front of you. - Anza Borrego, March 2024. #nemacladusrubescens #nemacladus #desertthreadplant #threadplant #springbotany #desertwildflowers #campanulaceae #anzaborrego #plantphotography #calflora #cnps

Do you recognize the plant this pipevine swallowtail is perched on? It is a rare California native snapdragon called Island Snapdragon (Gambelia speciosa) Island Snapdragon (Gambelia speciosa) is a somewhat vine-like perennial plant native to the Channel Islands and to Guadalupe Island, Mexico. It has trumpet-shaped red flowers that attract birds, especially hummingbirds. Under the right conditions it can bloom almost year round. Island Snapdragon is easy to grow, fast growing and beautiful, a perennial widely available in native California nurseries. It prefers sun or part shade (more shade inland), but you will get more flowers in full sun. It likes rocky slopes and seaside conditions and will tolerate a variety of soils. It tolerates occasional summer water, up to twice a month. Good in containers. The best part of this plant is that it is also a host plant to buckeye butterfly caterpillars and a favorite of the hummingbirds hanging out in my yard. The flowers are so heavy I have to prop it up with a metal garden stake so the flowers aren't laying on the ground making it difficult for the hummingbirds to feed. #butterfly #pipevineswallowtail #pollinator #butterfliesoftheworld #mothernature #mariposas #vlinder #فراشة #butterfliesofinstagram #Californianativeplants #pipevineswallowtailbutterfly #raisingbutterflies #swallowtailbutterfly #americanbutterfly #perhonen #πεταλούδα #anaheimhillsbuzz #蝴蝶 #तितली #fiðrildi #ig_butterfly #sommerfugl #fjäril #anaheimhillsbutterflies #California #butterflylover #calflora #islandsnapdragon #pollinatorfriendly #Gambeliaspeciosa

Do you recognize the plant this pipevine swallowtail is perched on? This is one of the dudleyas endemic to California. This one has funny names like Lady Fingers or Dead Man's Fingers 🤔🫣 It was in the news a couple of years back, because of its rarity, a couple of Chinese nationals were arrested removing hundreds from the wild & shipping them back to China for sale to the plant collectors. This is a succulent plant known by the common name Fingertips, Lady Fingers, and Dead Man's Fingers. This plant is native to southern California and Baja California, where it grows in rocky sandstone soils of the coastal and inland areas. The fingertips are made up fleshy, snakelike leaves growing vertically from just below ground level. The finger-like leaves are pale green or yellow green, cylindrical and pointed, growing up to 8 inches tall. The tips of the fingers often turn orange or red during the summer. The plant bears a branching flower cluster with several terminal branches each bearing up to 10 or 11 flowers. The flowers have pointed white petals about 0.5 inch long. It is a host plant to Sonoran Blue butterflies, Moss' Elfin butterflies & Orange Tortrix Moth. #butterfly #pipevineswallowtail #pollinator #butterfliesoftheworld #mothernature #mariposas #vlinder #فراشة #butterfliesofinstagram #Californianativeplants #pipevineswallowtailbutterfly #raisingbutterflies #swallowtailbutterfly #americanbutterfly #perhonen #πεταλούδα #anaheimhillsbuzz #蝴蝶 #तितली #fiðrildi #ig_butterfly #sommerfugl #fjäril #anaheimhillsbutterflies #California #butterflylover #calflora #Dudleyaedulis #Dudleya #pollinatorfriendly

I am more excited about the plant this handsome male pipevine swallowtail butterfly is on than the butterfly itself. This is a California native lilac called Ceanothus ‘Concha’. It is a big and arching evergreen shrub that becomes an unbelievable sea of ultramarine blue flowers in April. It supposedly grows very quickly in full sun and well drained soil. Amenable to clay if unwatered in summer. Once established NO summer water at all. Such a perfect plant for me since my yard is full of clay soil & I'm lazy. Grows quickly to its ultimate size give it room. Leaves burn below about 12ºF but recovery is rapid in spring and seldom sacrifices blooms. Rapid growing in our climate it consorts well with native wildflowers and especially bulbs. Completely drought adapted in our climate. One of the most stunning wild lilacs ever released. And believe it or not, I saw many California lilac during my trip to London last year. Its tough cold hardiness makes it a perfect addition to London's climate. #calflora #californianativeplants #Ceanothus #ceanothusConcha #swallowtailbutterfly #pipevineswallowtail #pipevineswallowtailbutterfly #anaheimhillsbuzz #anaheimhillsbutterflies

Gilmania luteola, golden carpet! This beautiful little Eriogonum relative is one of Death Valley’s rarest plants! It is endemic to Death Valley, and just a tiny portion of it and nowhere else on earth, though it can be locally abundant! That makes it rare enough due to its minuscule geographic range, which could be traversed by car in less than 20 minutes. Then comes the temporal rarity of Gilmania luteola. This plant only germinates and grows during years of heavy, well timed rains. So it may just stay dormant in the seed bank for many years, being completely absent from the landscape. This is the first time I’ve seen it since March of 2020, and as far as I can tell from iNat records, Calflora, and herbarium collections, that was the last time the species was seen until this year. Four years longing for moisture… over 1400 days of toasty, dry slumber in the hottest place on the earth, the seeds like little genies, patiently awaiting the rubbing the lamps. These are the kind of plants that fuel my passion for botany and learning about how incredibly hardy desert plants can be. Chloroprene maritimum ssp. maritimum Salt Marsh Bird’s Beak Endangered plant found in salt marshes across the California Coast, from Morro Bay down to San Diego. This plant sticks out among salt marsh flora due to its hemiparasitic characteristics, it’ll attatched itself to neighboring plants and steal nutrients without having to go through the process of photosynthesis. This explains the lack of green foliage on the plant. And like other salt adapted plants, it excretes excess salt crystals that give it this dewy look. #californianatives #calflora #endangeredplant #botany

Lomatium mohavense, Mojave desert parsley! This is one of those awesome plants that I have to share every year that I see it! Flowers so dark maroon that they almost look black make it stand out against the bright sandy desert floor that it likes to grow on. Some individuals can also have yellow flowers, and mixed populations of the two color morphs are common! The oak woodlands are on fire with warrior’s plume, Pedicularis densiflora. I’ve always noticed this plant in the sunlight mosaic beneath trees, but just learned its proximity to oaks is not coincidental—it a is partial root parasite (hemiparasitic)! While capable of photosynthesis, warrior’s plume taps into the roots of manzanitas and oaks to steal nutrients and water. #warriorsplume #pedicularisdensiflora

Turnstile botany of Anza-Borrego; some common players, and others less involved. 1: Justicia californica (chuparosa) (Acanthaceae), inhabiting almost every low to mid elevation sandy wash, putting on a spectacular display of red blooms, even the most careless drive by motorists can spot. 2: Hibiscus denudatus (rock hibiscus) (Malvaceae), found in rockier positions of canyons and narrower washes. 3: Lyrocarpa coulteri (Coulter’s lyrepod) (Brassicaceae) CRPR 4.3, of similar habitat to above Hibiscus, yet a much narrower range, essentially limited to ABSP within California, but also found in AZ, Sonora, and Baja. 4: Chylismia claviformis ssp. peirsonii (browneyes) (Onagraceae), abundant in low elevation sandy washes. 5: Adenophyllum porophylloides (San Felipe dogweed) (Asteraceae), widespread in mid elevation rocky washes, canyons, and slopes. 6: Ditaxis lanceolata (narrowleaf silverbush) (Euphorbiaceae), common in rocky habitats, often seen growing between boulders in protected patches. 7: Ditaxis neomexicana (common ditaxis) (Euphorbiaceae), same habitat as D. lanceolata, yet generally less encountered despite the common name at least within ABSP. 8: Helianthus petiolaris var. canescens (gray desert sunflower) (Asteraceae), very narrow range in CA restricted to sandy washes around Borrego Springs. Historically was likely more common in Coachella Valley pre-development. 9: Dalea mollissima (soft prairie clover) (Fabaceae), common in low elevation desert flats and washes. 10: Oenothera deltoides ssp. deltoides (birdcage evening primrose) (Onagraceae), abundant in loose sandy soils and dunes often growing alongside Abronia villosa.

Erythranthe marmorata, the Stanislaus monkeyflower! I spent much of the last week hunting down populations of this rare (CRPR 1B.1) little monkeyflower with the monkeyflower experts including @naomibot! It is a really cute, delicate little monkeyflower with very glandular vegetation, and with small yellow flowers that typically have a red splotch on the lower corolla lobe. After getting an eye for what this rarely reported species looks like, we were able to find it all over the place around its known range in proper habitat. That proper habitat typically being rocky areas. Cracks in cliffs, rock outcrops or simply under the shady sides of boulders. At first I thought it may be fond of limestone, because that’s where I first encountered it last year, but our team ended up seeing it on limestone, granite, basalt and even serpentine. Sooooo it seems to be more of a generalist of rocky terrain! Monkeyflowers are diverse, charismatic and easily recognized wildflowers in California, but they can also be notoriously difficult to identify to species, especially the yellow flowered species. Many of the traits to distinguish them are subtle. Because of this, Erythranthe marmorata is one of those species that has been hiding in plain sight! Erythranthe marmorata has actually been recorded many times on iNaturalist in the area, but the iNat AI usually spits out the suggestion of Erythranthe guttata, the common seep monkeyflower, for any yellow flowered monkeyflower, and most people just accept this suggestion for an ID. Because of this, there are tons of misidentified Erythranthe species with observations just waiting to be vetted! Naomi went through some of these and found lots of suspected Erythranthe marmorata observations that were misidentified as common species. We then went out and confirmed these observations in the field to be the rare one! A very fun and rewarding hunt! Who knows what other awesome discoveries lay dormant in old iNat observations!? #erythranthemarmorata #erythranthe #phrymaceae #monkeyflower #monkeyflowers #stanislausmonkeyflower #californianativeplants #calflora #botany #botanizing #rareplants #science #biology #ecology
