** Z is for Zostera marina! ** Eelgrass FTW! An aquatic perennial flowering herb native to shallow bays, estuaries, and coastal habitats where they play an important role in shoreline stabilization. A horizontal rhizome creeps under the sand with clusters of roots as anchors, and closed-sheath sinuous leaves flow long and languid to sway like green tresses in the tidal pulse. Underwater clonal meadows result from vegetative reproduction. Staminate flowers in this monoecious plant result in small chains of nutlets, who disperse when stems break and leaves are carried to new areas of the seabed. As key members of coastal ecosystems, these plants provide critical habitat for spawning, protective cover and nourishment. Even in death they provide: detached leaves wash beachside to serve shore-dwelling insects and invertebrates. Indigenous peoples enjoy the plant as a green, mixed as a drink, and by toasting the seeds to grind into flour. Threats include increased turbidity & water quality declines, dredging & trawling, and habitat destruction. . ** Y is for Yarrow! ** An herbacious, perennial, and mat-forming forb with small flowers, long stems, fluffety leaves, and a rich, sweet and pungent scent. Leaves are fernlike, lancolate, pinnate, and cauline, spiralling up to a lacey plinth for the white-ish disc flowers who form corymbic flat-topped capitulum clusters in large compound umbels. This pollinator plant hosts moths, beetles, bees; some birds use yarrow to line their nests, possibly to inhibit parasites. Used for centuries in traditional human medicine, the astringent qualities aid healing of a wide variety of ills. Yarrow makes an effective companion plant, attracting beneficial and predatory insects. The flowers can be used to make yellow-green dye. ** V is for Vitis californica! ** A fast-growing, winter deciduous and drought-tolerant vine who grows in riparian and damp areas, on slopes or flat ground, all along the coast of the California Floristic Province. An agresssive climber, the twisty ropey vines reach for the sun, and can extend to over 30 feet. An important nectar source for bees, the grapes feed animals and birds, who take cover under the thick foliage. Leaves are chromatic, moving from bright green into orange and yellow as the small bunches of sour purple grapes develop and pundulate on the vines. Native peoples use this plant for food, basketry, and cordage, and the fruits make good jelly. . ** U is for Uropappus lindleyi! ** An early-blooming annual anemochorous forb who likes sun, slopes, and sandy soils; just don't mistake it for a dandelion! Lineral leaves grow long and languid from a basal rosette, and are thin and strappy with intermittant horizontal stair-steps and silky hairs. The bell-shaped yellow flowers emerge from an elongated bud to open, wither, and close before re-opening as fruit (much like a dandelion, of which this is NOT.) Achenes of five shiny silver scales form a spherical canopy, overlapping in an Escheresque constellation, and the fruits are birdlike with wings and beaks, fledging to disperse through the air. Which is quite similar to a dandelion, but this plant != dandelion. No noted relationships with insects, birds, or humans. I suppose you could blow on one to make a wish, but remember, NOT A DANDELION. . ** T is for Trillium! ** An herbacious, deciduous, perennial, clumping and early spring-blooming forb who is a triple-threat of trinities: 3 bracts whorl around the sessile and trimerous flower which has (you guessed it) 3 sepals, 3 petals, 2 sets of 3 stamens and 3 carpals fused together. Oh, and 3 stigmas. The leaves grow large and undulate gracefully; the veining reveals little mini-me leaves, on which blue-toned mottling forms a patchworked landscape. Burgundy-colored blossoms stand at fierce attention around elongated stamen; they look like tiny hot-dogs. True to the name, Trillium takes 3+ years to flower, and once in place, does not like to be disturbed. Sadly, Trillium is at risk in the wild, as poachers rip up flowering plants instead of waiting for seeds to grow and bloom. . ** S is for Soap Plant! ** An herbacious, perennial and drought-deciduous, bulb-growing forb. Long, strappy blue-green leaves start from a central rosette, wooble along both margins, and grow up to a foot long. In midsummer, narrow white starburst flowers begin their bloom, sporting a lime green ovule and a cluster of 3 sepals & 3 petals with pinkish-purpled midveins swooping down in graceful arcs. The stamen are loud and proud: they leap up around the stigma like a bouncing carnival ride. Flowers bloom in the late afternoon or evening ("pomeridianum" = post meridian/past mid-day) and linger overnight to feed nocturnal pollinators, then close in the morning, never to open again; it's a one-and-done for each bloom. After pollination things get even more exciting! The petals twist and twine, embracing the ovule in a hug, and keep it snuggled up like a gift as the seed develops into bright-green glassy translucence. It's stunning. The saponin-filled bulbs make great soap, and Indigenous People use the fibers of the bulbs for brushes, the oils as medicine, and cooking removes the toxins to allow for eating. . ** R is for Red Maids! ** A low-growing, hardy, annual flowering forb with delightfully small deep pink/crimson flowers. Five petals glow around a handful of orange-yellow stamen; blue-green leaves are bumpified, long and oblanceolate, with new growth thick and roundish, and larger leaves resembling spoons. The flowers are an important source of nectar for native bees, and high-nutrient oily seeds feed birds, insects, and small mammals. Human use includes eating the young leaves and fresh shoots, and Native Peoples collect seed to winnow, toast, and grind, to create pinole (Spanish for shattered or pulverized.) Behold Nemacladus rubescens, the desert threadplant! Nearly invisible against the sandy, gravelly soils it inhabits, this diminutive desert-dweller is quite the charmer up close, and I mean really up close—each flower is 2-3mm across. @bothrops_et_al and I spent forever trying to find these, and in the final hour before I had to leave for home, we managed to spot a few in flower. I think I cried a little. We almost certainly passed by more and just missed them; in fact, looking through my other photos I noticed some budding ones in some shots of Diplacus bigelovii. I think this is probably one of those plants that I might never have noticed on my own unless I was literally crawling on all fours actively looking for tiny desert organisms; they blend in so well. It's honestly astonishing how much near-invisible life suddenly comes into focus when you decide to get down on your knees and simply observe. The way they appear from seemingly nothing—it's like suddenly finding the right words to voice what you've been meaning to say. ** Q is for Quercus agrifolia! ** Yesterday poison oak. Today majestic oak. A long-lived, evergreen, resiliant, cornerstone habitat tree with a gnarly and contorted branching structure and a massive, elemental trunk, this iconic tree grows up to 80 feet tall, can live for centuries, and is one of the only native oaks to thrive in coastal environments. The grand canopy of rich green foliage has smallish dark green spinose leaves often cupped at the margin. Apple galls add a delightful rotundity to the zigzaggy branches. Pendulous catkins spit pollen through the air to the tiny, almost hidden seed-bearing flowers, resulting in superlong reddish-brown acorns. Over 270 species (humans included) rely on these oaks for habitat and food; some species are totally dependent on them. So find a live oak to love, to care for, and to protect. They are our elders and have so much to teach us. . ** P is for Poison Oak! ** Pretty sure y'all expected this to be Poppy. But poppies get *tons* of love. Y'know who needs some love? Poison oak! . A many-stemmed, resilient, dioecious, deciduous flowering woody shrub (or vine) that is extremely variable in growth habit and leaf look, making it a chimera of trails and woodlands. Glossy leaves come as a 3-pack that color-shifts through the seasons from bronze to green to fire-hot red in the Fall, blazing across hillsides with brilliant exuberance. Spring brings delicate white flowers and summer offers up creamy white drupes that look like tiny pumpkins. This is a fantabulous ecosystem community-member who provides food, forage, foliage, habitat, and protection for a great number of birds, critters, grazers, and insects. The whole plant is armed with urushiol oil which causes severe skin allergies in 4/5 of humans. Despite the itchy reactions, native peoples use stems, shoots, sap, and leaves for basketry, ceremony, and medicinal curatives. . You gotta respect a plant who sets clear boundries and prefers not to engage with humans. . ** O is for Osoberry! ** A loosely branched dioecious and deciduous flowering shrub with smooth bark, osoberry can root from branches to create clonal communities. The twigs sparkle: purplish brown with orange lenticels and a nubbly-knobbly texture like a teetering stack of pancakes. Light green leaves taste like cucumber or melon and spout from branch tips while pendent racemes of white flowers drip and dangle. Pollen-bearing flowers and seed-bearing flowers work together to bring the magic moment of pollination. Fruit develops as a rainbow: tan > pale orange > pink > reddish purple > blueish black...what a show! After winter's limited food supply, wildlife welcomes the early-blooming osoberry: hummingbirds, butterflies, & bees use the nectar, while birds and mammals enjoy the (kinda bitter) fruit. Indigenous people also make tea of the bark and chew the twigs as a mild anesthetic. This one is oh-so-berry. .
