The Jerónimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos) was designed by Portuguese architect Diogo de Boitaca to commemorate the return of Vasco da Gama from India. The construction began on January 1501 and wasn’t completed until the 17th century. The building is predominantly Manueline style (Portuguese late Gothic). Today’s Lisbon adventure brought us to #PadrãoDosDescobrimentos or the #MonumentOfDiscoveries. Said monument was created by Cottinelli Telmo and the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida. Located along the northern bank of the #TagusRiver, where ships departed to explore and trade with India and the Orient, the monument celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery (or “Age of Exploration”) during the 15th and 16th centuries. Today featured a glass blowing demonstration on Murano Island, then a Gondola ride in Venice before heading to Burano Island for dinner. Fun fact about Burano - each family is assigned their own color to paint their properties and no one else can have that color while that family lives there. "In fair Verona, where we lay our scene..." Even the rain couldn't dampen the beauty that is Verona. We enjoyed a wonderful stroll which featured: The Arena - built about 80 years before the Colesseum, it is often called the mini-colesseum. It was also the inspiration for Dante's Inferno. Juliet's Balcony and Statue - Apparently it will bring you good luck in love to rub Juliet's right breast. Now we make our way to Venice. 🇮🇹 #csmyway @costsavertours
San Gimignano. One of the best preserved medieval towns and the future spot of my home and book/wine store. We walked through the narrow streets and alleys and it was like being transported back in time. We got to enjoy Gelato voted best in the world in 2024 at Dondolis. Then we did a truffle tasting and a chocolate tasting. It was a lovely afternoon that saw the sun come out after a very rainy first part of the day. Now back to the hotel for some dinner and wine. 🥰 🇮🇹 #csmyway @costsavertours
After seeing the most perfect man 😉 ... we walked through historic downtown Florence where we saw the Duomo Cathedral and Santa Croce Church among other cool buildings. We aren't letting the rain stop us. Next stop is San Gimignano, the best preserved medieval town. #csmyway @costsavertours
This morning we visited Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence where Michaelangelo's David is kept. Fun fact about Michaelangelo. He had a temper and held grudges. The unfinished sculptures were his "F U" because he was pulled away to paint the Sistine Chapel and he hated painting. So he didn't finish the statues that were commissioned for the Pope's mausoleum. 🇮🇹 #csmyway @costsavertours
My familia.... I am never leaving 🇮🇹. Today we visited Pisa and then had a traditional Tuscan dinner which included a Florentine steak and all the dancing Fun fact you didn't ask for. The tower of Pisa used to lean at an over 5% grade and since adding lead to the ground to secure the tower it now leans at under 4% grade Also...the dog's name is Bruno. 🇮🇹 Tomorrow is Michaelangelo's David and the oldest preserved medieval town. First photo is Circus Maximus, where the chariot races were. The place where grass doesn't grow is the old track Then we reached the Colleseum. It was built almost 2000 years ago. It took 8 years to build and could hold 60,000 people! It had 80 gates and could be emptied in under 10 minutes in an emergency. 🇮🇹 #csmyway @costsavertours
