I previously shared the negative of this photograph in collaboration with @art.wrkd during my recent show there, but I wanted to give the internet a taste of the print, which is the true and final form of the work. When I make photographs on black-and-white film, my intention is always to produce a print that conveys not simply the status of the light at the time of exposure (which is the job of the negative); but the feeling - both perceptual and emotional - of being there in that moment. I make these prints by hand in my darkroom, and they consist of silver suspended in a gelatin, deposited on cellulose fiber. They will last longer than I do. People By The Ocean. The “Printing with Plant Developer” workshop with @beathornton was this weekend, and the results are stunning! In this workshop, participants got to dive deeper into the world of sustainable silver gelatin developing by making darkroom prints using plant-based developers. Using black & white negatives, they learned to mix chemistry using their own plant brews, and observed how their prints reacted to different developers - there was quite a selection! Swedish photographer Erik Gustafsson harmonizes the birdsong of daily life with the cycles of darkroom creation and destruction In A House of Clay, @erikstudios places his conceptual and contextual photographic process in dialogue with a simple premise, a truism of photography: to elevate the everyday, to find meaning and take seriously the smallest of occurrences in ordinary life, and to invoke a sense of gratitude and wonder toward consciousness, sensing and feeling. Sometimes excessively normal, elsewhere tender and intimate, later dense and complex, Gustafsson's warm slices of life are digested in the darkroom, where the technical processes of photography fall in on themselves, becoming embedded in the image: cycles of photographing, printing, failing, dodging rules, repeating and scanning.
