OTD in Music History: Composer, conductor, and pianist Sergei Prokofiev (1891 - 1953) is born in what is now Ukraine. Prokofiev's amazingly charmed early life in Imperial Russia was almost a mirror image of his final miserable years, which were spent suffering under Stalin's repressive Soviet regime. Sergei Taneyev (1856 - 1915) arranged for the young prodigy to spend the Summer of 1902 studying privately with Reinhold Gliere (1875 - 1956). Further lessons with Gliere followed the next year, and then in 1904 Prokofiev traveled with his mother to St. Petersburg to meet with Alexander Glazunov (1865 - 1936), who was then a professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Glazunov urged Prokofiev's mother enroll Prokofiev at the Conservatory right away, even though he was still several years younger than most of his classmates. She accepted this invitation – and thus Prokofiev found himself studying harmony and composition with Anatoly Lyadov (1855 - 1914), conducting with Nikolai Tcherepnin (1873 - 1945), and orchestration with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844 - 1908). Prokofiev ultimately finished his years of schooling by jumping into the fray of the so-called "Battle of The Pianos": a cutthroat competition open to the five best piano students at the Conservatory for which the grand prize was a beautiful new grand piano. Prokofiev won by performing *his own* recently composed "1st Piano Concerto." Soon thereafter, Prokofiev traveled to London, where his nascent professional career was given yet another boost by legendary impresario Sergei Diaghilev (1872 - 1929) and his famous "Ballets Russes"… PICTURED: An intense portrait photo showing the middle-aged Prokofiev, which he signed and inscribed to a fan during his third concert tour of America in 1930. That fan, Paul Zaichenko (1873 - 1961), was a professor at the Chicago Music Conservatory as well as the first Choir Director at St. Mary’s Orthodox Church in Minneapolis (1891 - 1903). Simplicity in Music: Less is More 🎶🖼️ In our current age, it’s easy to fall into the belief that a packed stage and deafening volume equate to a higher quality musical experience or a greater capacity for enjoyment. While there is some truth to this assumption, simpler music can also elicit subtle, yet equally powerful physical responses, such as the familiar “goose bumps” sensation. OTD in Music History: Composer and organist Olivier Messiaen (1908 - 1992) dies in France. One of the foremost avant garde 20th Century composers, in his later years Messiaen drew inspiration from such eclectic sources as transcribed bird songs, Eastern modalities, and his own deep sense of Catholic mysticism. As a boy, Messiaen entered the famed Paris Conservatoire where he studied with Charles-Marie Widor (1844 - 1937), Paul Dukas (1865 - 1935), and Marcel Dupre (1886 - 1971), among others. After his graduation, Messiaen was appointed chief organist at the Eglise de la Sainte-Trinite Cathedral in Paris, and he held that post for more than 60 years. He also taught at the "Schola Cantorum" during the 1930s. Following the fall of France to Germany in 1940, however, Messiaen found himself interned for nine months in a German prisoner of war camp; this is where he composed perhaps his single most famous piece, the "Quatuor pour la fin du temps" ("Quartet for The End of Time"). This Quartet was written for the only four instruments that he had at his disposal in the prison -- piano, violin, cello, and clarinet -- and it was actually premiered by Messiaen and his fellow prisoners for a mixed audience which consisted of both inmates and prison guards. After his release from the camp in 1941, Messiaen was appointed to a full professorship at the Paris Conservatoire. His students there included fellow noted modernist composers Iannis Xenakis (1921 - 2001), Pierre Boulez (1925 - 2016), and Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928 - 2007). Claude Debussy, @philippecassard75 (2018) @actessud 🎶 Avec le chapitre #créationcontinuitésetruptures au programme des écrits du #bac2024 de #terminalehlp, les ouvrages scolaires proposent majoritairement des extraits portant sur les mouvements picturaux, mais délaissent la musique et le renouveau de cet art. Le livre de P. Cassard, pianiste de renommée internationale, rééquilibre le rapport de force et offre au lecteur un éclairage original sur un artiste majeur du XXe siècle. 🎵 Car ce qui est particulièrement intéressant ici, comme le souligne l’auteur dans son avant-propos, c’est que la figure de Debussy est abordée du point de vue de l’interprète. Les pages sont ainsi imprégnées de l’extrême sensibilité de Cassard à un compositeur qu’il a rencontré dans ses premières années de jeune pianiste, et qui l’a ensuite accompagné toute sa carrière. L’ouvrage parvient à être à la fois érudit et intime, et tout lecteur y trouvera son compte. ✍️📚 J’ai été en particulier curieux des passages où l’auteur évoque les relations de Debussy avec les autres formes d’art, qu’il s’agisse des toiles de Turner, Matisse, Vlaminck ou Bonnard, ou des textes de Mallarmé, Gide ou Oscar Wilde. OTD in Music History: Frederic Chopin (1810 - 1849) gives a rare public concert at the Salle Pleyel in Paris in 1841. Public concerts by Chopin were always noteworthy affairs, considering that he gave only about 30 of them in his entire adult life. But this concert is of particular historical interest today because it was reviewed by one of Chopin’s great contemporaries, Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886), in the “Revue et Gazette Musicale.” Liszt’s review reads in part: “Last Monday, at 8:00 in the evening, the salons of M. Pleyel were magnificently lighted. To the foot of the staircase, which was carpeted and perfumed with flowers, a stream of carriages brought the most elegant women, the most fashionable young men, the most famous artists, the richest financiers, the most illustrious noblemen, indeed, the whole elite of society… A grand piano stood open on the platform, and everyone sought the nearest seats and settled down to listen. They told themselves in advance that they must not miss a chord, a note, a suggestion, a thought that might fall from him who was to play upon it. And they were right to be so eager, so attentive to the point of worship -- for they awaited not merely a skilled virtuoso, or even an artist of renown; no, he was someone far beyond all this… they awaited Chopin!” [THIS REVIEW IS CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS] PICTURED: A copy of the first printed edition of Chopin’s famous "Twelve Etudes" (Op. 10), which were published simultaneously in 1833 by the Kistner publishing house in Leipzig, the Schlesinger publishing house in Paris, and the Wessel publishing house in London. This folio only encompasses the first half of the set (i.e., Nos. 1-6), because Kistner divided up the set and published it in two separate volumes in order to maximize his own profits. 💬 💿 The “Symphony of a Thousand” begins with an extended sonata formsonata formmovement, and the singers carry its primary melodic materials. For this reason, Mahler considered the movement “symphonic in form,” and he described his treatment of the voices as “instrumental” to Richard Specht in 1906. 💿 Nevertheless, this Allegro impetuoso resembles a Baroque composition as much as it does a typical orchestral movement, given the prevalence of contrapuntal writing. Mahler’s recent study of J.S. Bach’s cantatas likely informed his decision to incorporate so much polyphony, as did a desire to create a work that evoked an ecclesiastical style appropriate for its text.
