Yesterday I did a thing. I attended a Disability Comic Con and had an amazing time! I met so many wonderful people, had my picture taken with a few (I went alone), and even met a very sweet little ladybug named Piper in a wheelchair. The vibes were infectious and the community was spreading love and awareness. The Yellow Power Ranger was there, as her her has autism. They had a good lineup of panelists, really cool artists, a cosplay contest, and a 360 Photo Booth. The few photos I’m posting are with a cosplay group leader dressed as Loki, the Best in Show cosplay contest winner as Blade, and this panelist who is dressed as The Woman King who was a beautiful gem to talk to. I did unexpectedly win an award, which I have never done for cosplay, but I am very proud for it. I had lots of fun and look forward to going again next year and watching it grow. Great job to the coordinator team who put this together, I know from experience it’s a lot of work, and especially in your first year…a lot of stress. Thank you to the judges who made me feel welcomed. #mad4plaiddesigns #harleyquinn #disabilitycomiccon

Yesterday was an awesome day that I will always remember. Two years ago I started cosplaying as a hobby and attended my first con with a person who uses a wheelchair. The following day I attended with my husband who has mobility issues. The experience was fun however I noticed that large cons are exhausting when you’re attending with someone with a disability and that’s how I got here. The support from cosplayers met at those cons believed in the vision and helped make this event possible. The cosplayers that I met along the way at getting this event together contributed to the cause. Yesterday over 300 people showed up from Nashville to Galveston to experience a con just for them. It gets no better than this! People from over 20 states have asked when is the Disability Comic Com coming to their area and the answer is in the near future. I have trademark DCC and I’m please to announce that it is here to stay 🙌🏾. #disability #disabilitycomiccon #inclusion #superheroes #comics #villains #comiccons #houston

Excited to share that we’ll have special guests from the 501st Legion attending DCC. STAR GARRISON Star Garrison represents Texas within the 501st Legion. The 501st Legion (aka Vader’s Fist) is a worldwide Star Wars fan club celebrating the Star Wars universe using costumes and props, in particular those of the Stormtrooper characters, Imperial forces, and other various “bad guy” characters. The Legion is a volunteer club formed for the express purpose of bringing together costume enthusiasts and giving them a collective identity within which to operate. The Legion’s aims are to celebrate the Star Wars movies through the wearing of costumes, to promote the quality and improvement of costumes and props, and most importantly, to contribute to the local community through charity and volunteer work. Star Garrison works to participate in the community for the benefit of the children. Whether it is visiting local children’s hospitals, participating in benefits that support children, or just having fun at conventions, our desire to bring the joy of the Star Wars universe we had growing up to the children of this generation. Good morning DCC fam! We are happy to announce one of our guest speakers is the wonderful Tracy Lynn Cruz. Tracy Lynn Cruz is most famously known for her role as Ashley Hammond, the Yellow Ranger, in the 1990’s pop culture phenomenon Power Rangers. However, Tracy’s superpowers extend far beyond the big screen. She is the loving mother of four children, two impacted by Autism. Through the successes and continued challenges in her family’s journey, Tracy has bravely chosen to use her celebrity platform, now Family Ambassador with http://www.NuroLux.com, to share how she turned obstacles into opportunities. Her passion is empowering families to shift focus from fear of the future to celebrating successes while remembering how far they’ve come. In addition to empowering her own children, Tracy has also managed to beautifully maintain and grow her relationship with her husband of 26 years despite the daunting rollercoaster of finding, adjusting and managing the comprehensive care for their children. Tracy will be helping various communities impacted by Autism share their stories, learn from each other, and celebrate all impacted children’s superpowers. Meet disability self-advocate Carlos Rico Carlos Rico is a local artist specializing in anime and comic art. He recently got into cosplay during the pandemic lockdown. The first anime Rico ever saw was “Saint Seiya”. He spent every childhood summer in Mexico which was his only exposure to anime at the time as the US did not have many options. Rico is battling Rheumatoid arthritis and possibly lupus but is awaiting confirmation. Rico also struggles with depression, however he hasn’t let his bad days stop him from accomplishing many things. #RheumatoidArthritis #disability #disabilityawareness #invisibleillness #anime #comiccon #disabilitycomiccon #airbrushartist #SaintSeiya

Story time 📖 When I made this SC it was a couple of weeks after finishing my dissertation. At the time I didn’t know exactly what to do next. I’ve been working for myself in the aging and disability sector for about five years at the time and things were running so smoothly that I had a lot of extra time. I was also about to turn 40 and wanted to do something that I really enjoyed and that was playing in costumes, makeup and wigs. I decided that I wasn’t too old to start cosplaying and that’s how I got here. Now a couple of years later I have found cosplay to be my therapy and the community to be my friends. And in this moment I cannot believe that I’m mixing business with pleasure by hosting the first ever Disability Comic Con. It has been an experience and I now understand the ticket sales. I’m less than 25 days away and nervous asf but happy that this event has received so much love and support from the community, businesses, and cosplayers. It is through this life event that I want you to know that you’re never too old, you will always have people who will support you when your intentions and heart is in the right place, and there is definitely a business in your talent and skill set. “If you build it, they will come.” www.disabilitycomiccon.com #dcc #disability #cosplay #convention #marvel #dcuniverse #anime #blackcosplay #disabilitycomiccon #disabilityawareness #houston #comics
