Welcome pretty girl Luna from @dogdayspackadventures Theyโve been waiting ever so patiently to start lessons and tackle Lunaโs vocalisations (read barking, whining and even screaming) when she thinks or wants something exciting to happen! Luna has some good obedience foundations, but her body complies (briefly) while her mind continues to wind up. Her owners are going to need time and patience as Luna learns to self settle in various environments, and a clever eye to spot when they might accidentally be rewarding excitement instead of calmness. I am often asked, "should I let my dog sniff while out on a walk?" We all know the importance of sniffing. It's the most natural mental stimulation you can get. However, there are times when it needs to be adjusted due to behavioural issues. For me, whether or not they sniff, when, and how, is case by case. But here is a simplified version of my thoughts.... If working a basic obedience case, as long as the dog doesn't pull towards the smell & they are able to move on from it when asked, then yes! Go ahead and sniff. However, when working with aggressive, reactive, and some anxious dogs, the protocol is sniffin' by permission ONLY. If a dog has clearly shown you that they struggle to make good decisions, take away a lot of their decision making. Instead focus on structure, boundaries, and a load of guidance. Donโt let the adorable smile fool you!! Little Cooper has some VERY naughty thoughts when strangers come into his home, and is sometimes brave enough to back them up. He was one of those dogs who I walked in with a preconceived idea of what we needed to work through (naughty me too, I know!) and quickly had to turn around and adjust it. Our main focus for the session became just helping Cooper disengage and settle on his own. Heโs a busy little dopamine seeker; running his house, keeping everything in order and making sure his humans keep him in a steady supply of affection, engagement and cookies! Heโs a quick study, and comes with some excellent obedience skills that Mom has worked hard on - so now we need to get his mind to follow. We also are going to get this little guy muzzle trained for safety precautions. Iโm hoping it wonโt be needed at all by the time we are done here, but itโs a great skill every dog should have ๐ Iโm so looking forward to working with Cooper & his family. Moral of the story: DO go chasing waterfalls โจ๐ฟ โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ We are absolutely going to do more waterfall chasing this year. There are so many pretty ones around where we live. Some are more accessible than others, like this one, but thereโs nothing better than flying down some old backroad when your destination is a beautiful waterfall, amiright? This trail can get pretty busy, but the perks of being unemployed are that you get to go on a weekday and only see two other people ๐๐ผ we had the falls to ourselves so I was finally able to get a couple good ones of the dogs. Todayโs Pack #2! Featuring Nakoa, Niko, Joey and Gus! I think Nakoa was a little bit too excited to get to hike with his buddy Gus two days in a row! He was so focused on Gus and their games that his listening skills went out the window. He needed some leash time to settle back down and remember the rules. Niko was also pretty excited for all the playtime but thankfully he kept his ears open and came running in at each call. Joey lead the way as he usually likes to do.
