This work, this mission, our purpose, is intended to expand the wisdom of our midwifery elders into the collective consciousness. In order to accomplish this sacred goal, we must call in members of our birth work community and their loving supporters far and wide. This is a big job and entails much labor on the part of the traditional midwives as well as those of us who sit at their feet to document their knowledge and experience. We quite literally cannot make this happen without the generosity of spirit and resources of those like Dr. Nathan Riley. We are so very grateful for his generous donation. All donations received are used exclusively to compensate the elders and bring their body of work to the community at large. All donations to the Bridge Midwives non-profit are tax deductible and so, so appreciated. Please contact us today to contribute to this time sensitive campaign. Please join us in this effort by liking, sharing, joining our mailing list and donating! #genieten #samenkoken #passie #brioche #homemade #homemadebread #butter #shrimps #tomatoes #avocado #lime #cooking #cookingtime #doingitathome #foodie #culinairgenieten #dishoftheday #madewithlove #learntocook

This has been my go to for a while when making my iced coffee at home. With them being able to make up to 18 cups. Although, I do believe this depends on the size of the cup you use, how strong you want the coffee and if you’re only using to make coffee. Letting you make it your way, either with Water & Ice or Milk & Ice. I tend to go towards - Milk & Ice, however this can cause the ratio to become off and then its milk with a slight coffee flavour. MY HOME BIRTH STORY πŸŽ™ This has been the most requested video, and it's here for you. Almost two hours of me sharing this intimate, beautiful journey with you for your next roadtrip, run or podcast time. With exclusive footage of the birth, my final primal roar that got my daughter into the world and EsmΓ© waking up all chatty after her nap. Thank you for sharing this with me, for giving me the opportunity to do this and asking for it. It's an honour to be the mama and doula telling this story. Can't wait to hear yours. MAKING THE HOME BIRTH DECISION πŸŽ™ First interview of the year coming soon: a recorded open conversation with my husband Ryan on home births after the fact. I've been answering so many messages and questions about home births since the birth of our daughter and the main thing coming up is: how do I get my husband on board? We thought the best way to answer that is to share a recorded conversation you can listen to with your partner as a tool. Ryan shares such interesting information, honest thoughts and fears he had going into it, advice to fathers who are a "hard no" on home births, his perspective on managing a significant complication at home, and his view on midwifery care, hiring a birth doula, and home birthing before our experience and after our experience. If your partner would benefit from hearing a firsttime dad's journey around making this decision, going forward with it, experiencing it and looking back on it: this conversation is for you. Stay tuned for it uploaded on Brie Flis' youtube channel and highlighted on this page. Disclaimer: These are our thoughts, opinions and experiences based on things we have learned, researched and lived through during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. Our home birth was assisted by registered midwives. In no way should this conversation replace medical advice from your providers. We simply share our story to inform. 🀍 #homebirth #homebirthdad #waterbirth #midwife #midwifery #doula #birthdoula #postpartumdoula #doingitathome #homebirthbaby #father #newdad #interview #husband #birthuninterrupted #naturalbirthing #physiologicalbirth #brieflis #brieflisdoula #newparents #firsttimeparents

Hiring me as your doula means you get extra perks like my client library! These are a couple of my favorites, but I also have postpartum topics, and books to help the older kiddos in your life understand and adjust to the changes pregnancy and birth bring to their life! Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth- a favorite amongst homebirth parents, all over the world! Ina May is a wealth of knowledge and offers the most empowering testimony for the mama looking to ease her mind and trust her body during the journey to being her baby earthside. The Birth Partner- a MUST read for any support person that will play an important role during your birthing experience. I love being able to offer clarity and guidance to the overwhelmed or under-confident spouse so that they can be everything they need and want to be for their partner. Preparing the whole family for birth makes the entire journey that much more special. Packages are discounted when you book through the end of December! @thebridgemidwives Although it seems ubiquitous in our culture, the current medicalization of birth has only been in practice for less than 100 years. This means that for most of us, our great grandmothers were birthing as their great grandmothers had, in an unbroken chain, linking us back to the beginning of mammalian life. The midwifery model of care is founded upon the practices and beliefs of those wise people, shamans, and healing practitioners of old. Person-centered, holistic care, honoring the connection between mind and body, with the sincerely held belief that birth is a normal, natural, physiologic process that in most cases requires little to no intervention, are the core tenants of this model. Since the beginning of humanity, Midwives have been the supportive caregivers ushering women through the portal into motherhood, and the inspiration for this model in modern times. Current midwifery licensure restrictions and requirements confine midwives skills and wisdom within the boundaries of the medicalized birth template. We believe that, while accredited institutions can provide valuable knowledge, there is a deep insight into the heart of midwifery that is missing. The Bridge Program intends to connect new midwives to the traditional midwifery mentors many more experienced midwives were blessed enough to learn from. As a supplement to conventional medical education, this program hopes to span the generational gap, while preserving for posterity the wisdom of these experienced guides. What this program will ultimately look like, is entirely up to you, our valued donor. All funds received as a donation to our nonprofit will go towards creating this as educational program and compensating our elders for their priceless time and wisdom. ALL THINGS BIRTH: It seems that birth has become something that women should be fearful of and Gaby gave us a lot of great insight on why you shouldn’t feel that way. YOU call the shots on your birthing experience. Women are powerful and we should feel empowered by our births.β™₯️ Make sure to leave your thoughts, questions, comments below. We’d love to continue to talk about birth and help as many women feel empowered by it.

Surprise! I’ve been SUPER absent from social media for a LONG time because our family has been enjoying a slow and quiet pregnancy and soaking in a month of delicious baby snuggles and beautiful new family ties with the arrival of our fourth and final baby. Baby girl was born at home in a supremely and indescribably magical moment of pure, undiluted joy. I wish everyone who wanted to could birth supported in the way that I was. And while (for the second time…because my labors are just weird and wild) our birth photographer was not there for the swift active labor and birth, she was there before and during the immediate postpartum period. My wonderful husband and doula stepped up again to grab some photos during labor. I’m so grateful to have these treasures so I can forever return to these hours. I look forward to sharing more of our experience and to sharing some photos from the last birth I attended during my pregnancy in the coming weeks and months. #motherhandsbirth #northwestindianaphotographer #northwestindianabirthphotographer #indianabirthphotographer #homebirth #doingitathome #fortwaynebirthphotography

When I decided to have a home birth I took my preparation very seriously. Yes birth is unpredictable but you also can’t expect to have the birth you want without preparing for it. Whatever birth experience you are looking to have these can be helpful tools to get you ready both physically and mentally. ⁣ ⁣ Here is what I did: ⁣ Physical prep: as soon as I found out I was pregnant I started to train my body so that I could have a comfortable pregnancy and feel strong for birth and postpartum. This included⁣ *pregnancy specific strength training ⁣ *lagree ⁣ *regularly seeing a chiropractor trained in the Webster method to help with baby positioning (shout out @wellsetdenver ) *pelvic floor physical therapy with @dramyosborne *acupuncture with @fertilegroundhealth ⁣ *uterine massage with @holiherbpath ⁣ Birth team- find a team of providers that not only fully supports your goals but truly believes in your ability to have a physiological birth. For me that was 2 home birth midwives and a doula. ⁣ ⁣ Birth Stories: I learned so much about birth and what can happen by listening to birth story podcasts. And positive home birth stories really helped me to visualize what my experience could look like and know that if others could do it so could I. I mostly listened to⁣ @thebirthhour @doingitathome ⁣ Visualization: you have to mentally commit to the experience you want. If you don’t believe it can happen it probably won’t. Go in with positive affirmations and a clear vision of what you want. ⁣ ⁣ Education: this is a huge piece in mental preparation. The more you understand the process of physiological birth the less fear you will have around it. The less fear you have the less tension you will hold in your body and the more you will be able to handle the intensity of the experience. ⁣ ⁣ I want to be clear that I am not trying to say home birth is right for every mom, but I do want to normalize it as a healthy option for those who feel like it might be right for them. I’m happy to be a resource for anyone considering it. Feel free to DM me questions you have! ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #homebirth #homebirthbaby #unmedicatedbirth #naturalbirth #pregnancy #doingitathome #hypnobirthing

(6 of 6) I remember Jessie and Melanie massaging my legs with cypress oil (it can help prevent excessive blood loss). Eventually I went to bed and everyone followed us there. After all of the notes were taken and the mess was cleaned up, the team left us to rest and soak up our new family member. I still don’t think I’ve fully processed how truly beautiful Aubrey’s birth was. I have moments all of the time when I look at her and think, β€œLook how wrong they were.” Aubrey is a miracle, just like every other child. She has added so much love to our lives. We will forever be in awe of her πŸ’“

8/12/2023, 5:33:26 PM

(5 of 6) I got into the pool and immediately had a big contraction. I reached my hand down and felt my baby’s head so I decided to do the hard work and get her head out. My team was respectful of me wanting space so no one was crowding me. They asked me how I was feeling and I said stuck. They asked, β€œstuck? Can you feel baby coming down?” And I said, β€œout”. To which they responded, β€œbaby is coming out?!” 😳 They could now see baby’s head was out and they thought baby might have a short umbilical cord since I felt stuck. I pushed on the next contraction and baby was out. She was born behind me so I was shouting, β€œsomeone catch my baby! Who has my baby! Give me my baby!” Jessie said I was full mama bear and it was beautiful to watch. Aubrey was born with her cord wrapped three times around her neck and once around her trunk. Jessie taught us that 1 in 3 babies is born with their cord around their neck and that really was true for me since Aubrey was my third baby. It may be scary to witness but it’s a variation of normal. Jessie’s midwife assistant (@origins_midwifery) helped to quickly untangle Aubrey from her cord. I sat a moment and held baby and saw that she was a girl and felt instantly in love with her. I carefully climbed out of the birthing pool and laid on the couch covered in chucks pads. I delivered my placenta there. When the cord stopped pulsating Jared cut it. Jared brought the kids out to meet the baby (they slept through the birth). They said hello but they were tired and wanted to go back to bed.

8/11/2023, 5:35:34 PM

(4 of 6) I had some big contractions in the bath and decided to try and get some rest before baby’s arrival. I went to bed and had some big contractions back to back. Jared finally came to bed and I begged him to press on my low back to counter the extreme pressure I was feeling. When the contraction finished I stood up out of bed and my legs were shaking (from adrenaline). I told Jared I knew I was really in labor because my legs shook when I was in labor with our first two children. He wanted to laugh I’m sure, but called our birth team and asked them to come. They all trickled in and Jared set up the birthing pool. My contractions felt really intense at this point and I was trying hard to vocalize through them. This was my most intense labor. It felt like a train was going through me and I needed to just let it happen. I wasn’t scared because I had done this two times before and I trusted my body to handle this process as it was designed to. Jared was so loving and supportive. He was putting counter pressure on my back and reading me the birth affirmations I had taped on the wall. I could hear the playlist of worship music playing. Jared told me I should probably go sit on the toilet like I did in my other labors to get baby in good position. I had a big contraction there and then came back to the living room where I had another big contraction and my water broke! I hadn’t felt this in my other labors so I yelled β€œWater! Water!” I told our midwife I thought it was too early to feel this way but I felt like I had to push and I wanted to get in the birthing pool. She told me to listen to my body.

8/10/2023, 4:45:45 PM

(3 of 6) Aubrey’s birth story feels like the sweetest ending to the scariest season I’ve ever lived through. I had some hard contractions the evening before Aubrey was born, but I knew we would see our midwife for a routine check up the following day so I went to bed thinking baby might join us before the appointment. She did not! @goldsoulmidwifery came to our house for our routine appointment and said she thought baby would be joining our family that evening after the big kids went down for bed (babies often come when a mother knows her older children are safely away). My contractions got more intense throughout the day but I was functioning normally through them. I walked and did chores and played with the kids and ate a cheeseburger for dinner. We went on a family walk before getting the kids down for bed and I was having contractions I had to stop and breathe through. Jared said I was in labor and I said I wasn’t 🀣 we were getting the kids into bed and Hana was having a hard time (normal seeing as our family dynamic was changing) but it made my heart rate go up and in turn I had a big contraction and Jared told me to go wait in the living room while he got the kids down for bed. I went to the living room and cried through the contraction because I felt like I was failing my big kids. But as it finished I went back to the kids room and laid with them and Jared went to the living room. When I came out from getting them down, I saw that he had set up my tea lights and music and he said he had called our birth team to let them know I was in labor. I told him I was simply not in labor yet and he had to call them all back and tell them not to come! I thought it would be so embarrassing to have them come and have it not be actual labor (I am notorious for thinking β€œit’s got to get worse than this!”). Jessie called me and asked what was going on since my husband and I couldn’t agree about me being in labor. I told her I wasn’t and she suggested I take a bath and go to bed for some rest. I told her that was my exact plan.

8/9/2023, 4:10:16 PM

(2 of 6) There were so many times I was failed by the medical model, it’s honestly hard to even keep count. The last doctor I saw through our insurance told me I did not have PA but that I did have β€œplacental lakes” that were preventing my baby from developing properly. She also suggested that because my baby’s arms were measuring β€œshort” at 28 weeks that my baby could have Down syndrome. I left that appointment and sobbed. I didn’t believe her (and I knew I loved my baby just how God was making her). After seeking a second opinion from a maternal fetal medicine specialist outside of our insurance, who confirmed I did not have placenta accreta (or placental β€œlakes”)- we decided to proceed with our third water birth at home. Our midwife @goldsoulmidwifery was with us every step of the way offering her support. Our doula @paulinescharf prayed with me more than once and answered every text I sent her way. God made sure we were loved throughout this storm. I have so many people I owe thanks to.

TW: birth story Austin was still hanging up the birthing affirmations and filling up the birth pool when I crawled onto our pull out couch bed to snuggle LeRoy. He was showing signs of being tired and fighting it. Knowing he wouldn’t go to bed without me and Austin, I decided that we could at least snuggle together while we waited for brothers arrival. He grabbed his bear and blanket and through my contractions he would ask if β€œmama kk?” And if β€œmama crying?”. My midwife timed my contractions and watched me interact with LeRoy and said I probably had 2-3 hours before things ramped up. She stepped out for a little to get some stuff ready and prepare. I was snuggling LeRoy when I had a bout of nausea that screamed bucket. All my dinner (and tbh probably my lunch) all decided to reintroduce itself to my esophagus and into the bucket. Austin dumped that out and I laid back empty and tired, and still having inconsistent VERY strong contractions. Austin asked if I was ready to get into the pool and I said β€œI am not moving from this spot”. An hour later my midwife came in and I was leaning against the headboard/back of the couch low moaning with a cold rag and definitely in my own world. She came in and looked at my body tensing up and asked if I was pushing. I said β€œno” because I wasn’t purposefully, then actually paid attention to my body and on the next contraction realized that, yes, my BODY was pushing, and I was unaware of it (fetal ejection reflex). At which point she got on the bed for a look and I exclaimed β€œthere goes my waters” and sure enough there was my waters and show. After getting me on new pads she examined me and realized I was fully dilated, effaced and with little contractions the head was starting to show. I began pushing again, moaning low and deep and could feel the ring of fire beginning. I commented that I could feel the ring and as soon as I said that, I had another long low contraction and the head was out. LeRoy was watching sitting on the bed next to me and while baby and my body worked together to position him for the final push to freedom. 9 months in ➑️ 9 months out. I can’t believe I have a 9 month old! That I birthed a 9+ baby boy at home on our floor 9 months ago to the day. These last months have been a period of SO much adjustment. I’d be lying if I said any of it was easy - it feels like I’m pulled in a million different directions. Kids always needing me at the same time, trying to piece together periods of sleep, work, trying to manage all the activities. Work has changed (probably for the better!) and will continue to keep me busy and provide fulfillment, along with being a mom. But we’re here. I’ve surprised myself at how capable I am, of taking care of them, of carrying on, of opening my heart to more love, little hands and memories. I’m grateful AND exhausted! All the feels today. Nothing like taking a seat on the "dilation station" for a few minutes πŸ˜‰. I arrived to this client's house after quite a few hours of early labor. She had done plenty of mental and emotional work with me before labor and she was totally in the right mindset when labor hit. She was ready to do the thing by the time I got there. She used multiple methods for coping with the changes her body was making during labor including movement, breathing exercises, a tens unit, and hydrotherapy (warm water in a birthing pool). We finally got out of the pool to use the bathroom and change positions for a bit a couple minutes before this photo was taken. She was so much in her zone that she didn't even feel this! Now, I will catch your baby in whatever position feels right for you. That's just how I get down, so we gave it a bit more of a squat and out came such a precious baby girl! #crowning #headout #TRMidwifery #communitybasedcommunitystrong #midwifeofcolor #midwifery #homebirth #infantmortality #clevelandbirthworkers #clevelandhomebirth #communitymidwife #homebirthcleveland #doingitathome

Baby in between ✨realms✨ Do you see how I’m reaching down feeling my baby as they’re working their way earth side ? I highly encourage mamas to do this ! Finally getting around to sharing this birth story from December of my birthday present baby (with permission, of course 😘) I took a client late in her pregnancy, she had moved and had been seeing OBs because she had a cervix that needed extra help. Once I heard her story I was determined to help her have her first homebirth. She was having her cerclage out at 36.5wks, just days before we were "allowed" to homebirth. She had been having contractions her entire pregnancy. We were both worried about not making it. By some miracle we made it to 37. She called me that morning to let me know that contractions felt like active labor. I loaded my bags and got to her house as the sun came up. Contractions had a funky pattern. Evening came with not much change so we both agreed that I should go home. She called again the next morning, unsure of what to think of the contractions at this point. They were strong but a day full no progress when you've had short labors will play games with you. I decided to head back over. She requested to be checked and there hadn't been any change. She was at the end of her rope. My assistant came back and we encouraged her labor. Evening came and we did see some progress and thought we would have a baby any moment. I called my nurse and she had a friend join us as we all awaited a baby. Mama requested another exam. Still 8cm. Babys suture lines were clear that we could do more work, we had been doing many #spinningbabies moves during the day. We finished the exam and listened to baby, heart tones had suddenly dipped below comfort levels.... continued in comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️ #homebirth #naturalbirth #doingitathome #birthwithoutfear #midwife #midwifelife #lynchburgva

On the podcast this week: 414: Choosing Home Birth as an Evidence-Based Minded Person Plus Letting Go, Accepting Pain and Being Patient with Shira Page (DIAH Classic) Can you over prepare intellectually for birth? This is a topic that comes up in our interview with Shira Page, NP and CLC. According to Shira, when it came to her first birth: β€œI had been planning to deliver at home my entire life because my mom gave birth to my brother at home. We did Bradley, I read all the books, watched all the documentaries, and listened to DIAH non-stop. My labor at home was over 40 hours of nonstop stabbing back pain and non-progressive labor. We went to the hospital to get morphine and sleep and returned home to continue to try to labor. After another day at home doing all the things, we transferred to get an epidural. The hospital experience was okay but still had a lot of moments where I felt decisions were taken from me. I felt that I overprepared intellectually and didn't focus on letting go, accepting pain, and being patient.” We talk about the details of her first birth, then details of her second, including some of her postpartum and breastfeeding journey. Things we talk about in this episode: - La Leche League - Business of Being Born - co-care model - Bradley Method - hospital transfer - mental preparation - prodromal labor - postpartum trauma and anxiety - placenta removal Listen to @doingitathome wherever you get your podcasts. . . . #homebirth #doingitathome #diahpodcast #birth #empoweredbirth #waterbirth #hospitalbirth #birthtrauma #midwife #doula #obgyn #businessofbeingborn #newborn #postpartum #pregnancy #waterbirth #breastfeeding #hospitaltransfer #birthcenter #lalecheleague #bradleymethod #prodromallabor #placenta

"Nothing better than a cloth diaper baby butt!" - my friend when I told her we were planning to use @esemblybaby diapers for Baby Bivens. I'm very excited about using the system from Esembly for many reasons. A few are: 1. Using the Esembly system is helping us to save money (yes, please!) 2. The diapers are blowout-proof (heck yes, please!) 3. They help to keep disposables out of landfills 4. Esembly has a resell and recycle program that we can use in the future When you go to Esembly's website and use the code DIH20, you'll get 20% off of your order. Perfect to give it a try and/or gift to a friend! . . . #esemblypartner #esemblybaby #affiliate #doingitathome #clothdiaper #clothdiapering #diapers #newborn #postpartum #babyregistry #nursery #babyitems

Why home birth from episode 412 with @supyogawithkarine2.0 "While educating myself during my first pregnancy I fell in love with everything about birth and knew I wanted a home birth. Unfortunately I wasn’t eligible for a home birth with my first pregnancy due to heart concerns following a health incident. This time around, I was determined to have a home birth and make sure to put all odds on my side." . . . #homebirth #whyhomebirth #doingitathome #diahpodcast #havebabieswhereyoumakethem #birthstory #homebirthstory #birthpodcast #homebirthpodcast #hospitalbirth #midwife #doula #obgyn #prenatalcare #pregnancy #birth #postpartum
