Born on this day in #1915: #JohnHopeFranklin Franklin @harvardalumni was a US #historian. Author of dozens of books, he is best known for his #1947 #FromSlaverytoFreedom, which has sold 3 million+ copies. His widely influential work also provided context for the #1954 #BrownvsBoardofEducation decision. In #1955, Franklin delivered the keynote entitled "The Problems of Race in America" at the three-day National Conference on Selectivity and #Discrimination in American Universities conference @MIT. Focused on issues of racial discrimination in higher education, the conference was organized by @mitstudents Reginald Griffith '55 and Eldon Reilley '55, and was likely the first of its kind held anywhere in the U.S. at the time. Franklin was former president @phibetakappasociety, #OrganizationofAmericanHistorians, #AmericanHistoricalAssociation, and #SouthernHistoricalAssociation. He served as professor @howard1867, head of the #BrooklynCollege and #UniversityofChicago history depts., and history chair at #DukeUniversity. In #1995, Franklin was awarded the #PresidentialMedalofFreedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. Made a trip to downtown Raleigh today and decided to visit The City of Raleigh Museum. I was awed by the Dwane Powell exhibit. I had never been and had no idea what was there (other than the History of BBQ exhibit) or who he was beforehand. Seeing so many sketches and original drawings and sketchbooks and his drawing table was such a treat. I don’t usually go for political cartoons but his illustrations were so masterfully executed I had to take time and study them. At the end of the exhibit there are markers and a blank wall so you can draw something. I had no idea what to draw so I sketched this. Thanks to Ta-Nehisi Coates’s “The Case for Reparations” and behind it Richard Rothstein’s book “The Color of Law,” many people are familiar with Chicago as a prime example of the redlining practices that ensconced segregation in American cities beyond the era and geography of official Jim Crow. Electoral politics in Chicago were, not surprisingly, just as divided by race. At the City of Raleigh Museum yesterday, I saw this stark cartoon in an exhibit dedicated to the work of Dwane Powell, who for many years was a syndicated cartoonist for Raleigh’s News & Observer. Dated April 14, 1983, the cartoon comments on the election of Harold Washington, the city’s first black mayor. The caption reads as follows: “Washington was elected mayor of Chicago after a nasty campaign against Bernard Epton split the city along racial lines. A majority bloc of anti-Washington alderman opposed most of Washington’s agenda. A court-ordered special election resulted in a city council favorable to Washington’s agenda for the first time.” I like this cartoon, but I’m reading on Wikipedia that a newly mobilized Latino vote was essential to getting Washington into office and eventually enabling him to do his job.
