“He was a great thundering paradox of a man, noble and ignoble, inspiring and outrageous, arrogant and shy the best of men and the worst of men, the most protean, most ridiculous, and most sublime. No more baffling, exasperating soldier ever wore a uniform. Flamboyant, imperious, and apocalyptic, he carried the plumage of a flamingo, could not acknowledge errors, and tried to cover up his mistakes with sly, childish tricks. Yet he was also endowed with great personal charm, a will of iron, and a soaring intellect Unquestionably he was the most gifted man-at-arms this nation has produced.” — William Manchester on Douglas MacArthur American Caesar: Douglas MacArthur 1880-1964, by William Manchester. Prognosticatio…Johannes Grünbach, Köln, Peter Quentel, 1526. Recent acquisition/personal collection. Originally published in 1488, this book is noted for being the first successful combination of astrology and prophecy in print. The book includes prophecies on clerical reform, ecclesiastical and political fortunes, success over Christian foes, failure of morality, and of course the coming of a false prophet/Antichrist. Near to my interest is the famous first woodcut containing the Sibyl between Aristotle, Ptolemy, Birgitta of Sweden, and a Brother Reynhard/hermit (who is largely unknown). Ptolemy and Aristotle represents astrology and astronomy in classical antiquity, and the Christian mystic Birgitta and Reynhard represent modern figures of Christian visionary prophecy. Between them is the Sibyl, who serves as a pre-Christian visionary and link to gods, and a foreteller of the coming of Christ and Christian salvation. All five are equally receiving divine guidance from the Pantocrator, who in the 15th century was understood to control the planetary movements. There are 44 total woodcuts in the book, and the images selected include the Sibyl and Birgitta receiving visions, symbols of the church as an unsteady boat, a nun looking back on the cloister she left, and friars being tempted by devils. The book was condemned in 1492 by theologians in Cologne for ascribing true prophetic value to non-Christians, but the work endured and was printed in numerous editions throughout the 16th century. #rarebookcollector #rarebookseller #libraries #antiquarianbooks #rarebooks #librarian #earlyprinting #specialcollections #bookcollector #books #booksellers #bookstagram #biblioteca #bibliotheque #librariesofinstagram #oldbooks #woodcutwednesday #woodcut #prophecy #astrology #sibyl

Our book of the day is a beautiful hand-coloured copy of the very rare first edition of the first Spanish emblem book, Juan de Borja's "Empresas morales" (Prague, Georg Nigrin, 1581). Juan de Borja y Castro (1533-1606) was a Spanish noble from the renowned House of Borja (Borgia) and was the third son of Saint Francis Borgia, or Francisco de Borja, fourth Duke of Gandía (1510-1572). He was educated by and among Jesuits at the Universidad de Gandía. He was a member of the religious and military Order of Santiago - at that time under the direct control of the Spanish monarchy - and later entered the service of King Philip II of Spain and Prince Carlos. As a soldier, he took part in the Italian Wars (a series of conflicts between 1494-1559). Borja was a distinguished diplomat, first acting as a substitute for the Portuguese ambassador and in 1576 moving to Prague as the Spanish ambassador to Emperor Rudolph II of the Holy Roman Empire, where he stayed until 1581. Upon his return to Spain, he was named head "majordomo" of Maria de Austria, acting as the head of her household staff until 1603. The Empresas morales is Juan de Borja's only known literary work. A second edition was published in Brussels in 1680 by Borja's grandson, Francisco, who added 124 emblems claimed to have come from among the original authors papers. At the end of the 17th century, in 1697, a Latin translation by Ludovicus Camerarius was published in Berlin, while a German translation by Georg Friedrich Scharff had appeared a few years earlier (1693), also in Berlin. BOETHIUS, De philosophico consolatu…Straßburg, Johann Grüninger, 1501. Recent Acquisition. This is the first illustrated edition of the Consolation of Philosophy by Boethius, originally written in 523 when he was imprisoned, and shortly before he was executed. It was one of the most widely read and influential works in the Middle Ages. The book is written as a conversation between Philosophy (a woman) and Boethius, and begins by framing his imprisonment within the context of capricious human nature and larger philosophical concepts, such as fate and fortune, but rapidly expands to discuss even broader concepts such as free will, the nature of good and evil, and justice. This copy was edited by the humanist, Sebastian Brant, who worked with Johann Gruninger on other works for years. Illustrated by an unknown Strasbourg master, the first woodcut depicts Rome, with the Pantheon, Campidoglio, Colosseum, and Castel Sant’ Angelo recognizable. There are 78 woodcuts in total, many depicting scenes of Lady Philosophy instructing and guiding Boethius through allegorical scenes of history, theology, and philosophy. The first image is the gold decorative center tooling on the parchment binding. #rarebookcollector #rarebookseller #librarians #libraries #antiquarianbooks #rarebooks #librarian #bookdealer #earlyprinting #specialcollections #bookcollection #bookcollector #bookcollecting #books #booksellers #bookstagram #biblioteca #bibliotheque #librariesofinstagram #oldbooks #parchment #boethius #philosophy #incunabula #rome #roma #vedutediroma #woodcutwednesday #woodcutstudio

Juni. Wer jetzt wissen will, was das Jikji ist und warum es einen Anfang markiert, schaut gerne vorbei @klingspor_museum // Two years ago, I travelled to South Korea with a colleague to set up an exhibition from the Klingspor Museum's collection in Cheongju. MEYER, Rudolf (1605-1638) and Conrad (1618-1689), illustrators. ‘Sterbensspiegel….’ ‘Todten-dantz…’ Zurich: Johann Jacob Bodmer, 1650. Personal collection. This is the dance of death publication that was the most artistically different and skillful since Holbein’s in 1538. The series here depicts Death with flesh, feathered and skinned wings, and in many cases, snakes and worms. Typical of the baroque period, the images (60 in total) are highly stylized and exaggerated, but are still loosely modeled off Holbein’s and Matthäus Merian’s dance of death, which was reworked and published a year earlier in 1649, and recreates more faithfully the dance of death mural originally painted on the wall of Basel’s Predigerkirche in 1440. Unlike the moralizing focus of earlier dance of death works, this book seems instead to highlight more the artistic and dramatic qualities of the dance of death theme and imagery, which later works and artists taking up the theme would eventually follow and build on. The dance of death is a big collection interest of mine, and this work in particular is one of my favorites. More dance of death posts eventually to follow. #rarebookcollector #rarebookseller #libraries #antiquarianbooks #rarebooks #librarian #bookdealer #earlyprinting #specialcollections #bookcollection #bookcollector #bookcollecting #books #booksellers #bookstagram #biblioteca #bibliotheque #librariesofinstagram #oldbooks #danceofdeath #death #macabre #dansemacabre #gothic #baroque #deutsch #libro #libros #bücher #antiquariat
