Some fun sightings in the garden yesterday! One of my tagged monarchs was enjoying my zinnia patch🥰 This male was released on September 29th. Hopefully he figures out soon that he should be making his way south!😅 It has been unusually warm for October in Minnesota, so I wonder if that might be confusing the butterflies🤔 It was also strange to see a female eastern black swallowtail laying eggs(!!!) on my golden alexander! I went back later to collect them, and I have found 7 total so far. We’ll see if they hatch. I couldn’t believe it! My last EBS caterpillar made its chrysalis several days ago and I was not expecting to have any more. It begins!! 🥚🐛🦋 The first Eastern Black Swallowtail of the season visited this morning and spent an hour laying eggs on my rue! 🌿 I collected 28 and am sure I missed a bunch. The season is off to an intense start! Not a number I'd recommend for beginners. Many thanks to my cat, Bristol, for being a reliable butterfly alarm for yet another season! His excited chirping never fails to alert us to a new batch of eggs in progress which is actually a very valuable service because many insect predators like to slurp them up before they hatch! 🐱 Now to figure out how to edit videos so I can do a little instructional series! 👩🏫 If you'd like to try your hand at providing host and nectar plants for butterflies, I recommend buying plants from @joyful_butterfly_

Last Wednesday I found 4 Swallowtail Eggs on my Parsley Plants in my Butterfly Garden called “Erica’s Butterfly Garden” at @twinvalleynaturepark . These eggs are Eastern Black Swallowtail Butterfly eggs. I was able to watch the beautiful female Eastern Black Swallowtail lay these eggs on my Parsley. The caterpillars hatch about 3 to 7 days after the eggs were laid but it depends on the host plant that they are laid on, the weather, the climate, and the temperatures. Now these eggs are young Eastern Black Swallowtail Caterpillars that are very hungry. ✨ Big Butterfly Release✨: The Big Butterfly Release happened at @twinvalleynaturepark in my Butterfly Garden located on Over The Rainbow Blvd. I released a total of 8 butterflies into my garden. These are the butterflies that I brought with me to work Yesterday at @twinvalleynaturepark . There were a total of 8 butterflies that I had in the enclosure to release. I had 6 American Lady Butterflies, and 2 Eastern Black Swallowtails to release into my garden. 4 of them flew away as soon as I opened the enclosure, while the other 4 butterflies decided to say in my garden until they were ready to fly away out of my care. 👑In The Monarchy! Look what I found on my garden dill this morning! There were 2 little Eastern Back Swallowtail caterpillars munching on what is left of my dill. The patch of white in the middle of their body is referred to as a saddle. How cute is that spiky head?! The pair are now enjoying a fresh parsley plant (another of their host plants). 👑In The Monarchy! Our Eastern Black Swallowtail is now a chrysalis! I was able to catch the last part of the chrysalis formation in my video. You can see the girdle and watch as the caterpillar secures itself to the silk button at his hind end. (The completed chrysalis appears upside down because the stem it is on was drooping. Once I was able to water, it righted itself.)

👑Introducing the first Eastern Black Swallowtail chrysalis in The Monarchy! You can see the silk safety belt and also the silk webbing all over the dill stem. It looks a lot different from a Monarch chrysalis! And we have another caterpillar ready to form their chrysalis. Compare the colors of the caterpillars in Photo #3 and #4. See how different they look? Both are perfectly normal.
👑In The Monarchy! We are very close to seeing our first Eastern Black Swallowtail chrysalis! Can you see the the silk “safety belt” around the caterpillar in Photo #1? This is how the swallowtail secures itself to form the chrysalis. The other big guy has been wandering around looking for the perfect spot to weave his silk safety belt. And there is still one that is interested only in food. Look at the orange horns on the cat in the last photo. The horns stay hidden unless the caterpillar is is disturbed or feels threatened. They also release a bit of an unpleasant odor. But they are pretty cool looking!
Day 9—was interesting. Moved all the cats to enclosures to pupate but couldn’t find two! Finally found one crawling on grass but looked everywhere and couldn’t find that last one. I will refer to him as Houdini now. On the video you’ll find that Houdini managed to find a place by my sliding door. I was able to move him back to the enclosure and on the fourth pic you’ll see that he found a spot…on the outer rim on the enclosure 🤦♀️ He’s still protected by some netting but 🤬 #caterpillar #easternblackswallowtails #butterfly #butterflies #easternblackswallowtailcaterpillar

My third overwintering EBS to emerge so far! One female and two males so far. This is a male - they have more yellow on their wings and have claspers. May 8th and may 15th - one girl and one boy (although I’m not totally sure this time!) it’s amazing how late in the season these beautiful Eastern Black Swallowtails emerge. These babies overwintered in a tent on my porch and just now are beginning to emerge. It’s a reminder of the importance of leaving our garden material for as long as possible so the many pollinators that overwinter can emerge. #easternblackswallowtails #spring #pollinators
