A quote from our show, Broken Wide Open These are the words of our leading lady, Shana Pennington-Baird, as she prepares to tell the audience of an almost unbelievable story. The story of her miraculous survival of emergency heart surgery. In August of 2019, Shana was on a family trip through Iceland, Scotland, and Ireland. Towards the end of the trip, her family flew home to Seattle and Shana stayed behind in Dingle, Ireland for a work conference. Almost immediately after her family left, Shana experienced a serious heart emergency – an aortic dissection – and was quickly rushed to a local hospital for surgery. Now, four years later, Shana and a team of incredible musicians and theatre artists out of Seattle, Washington have put together a beautiful one-woman musical that recounts Shana’s experience. And they’re taking it back to Dingle to thank the Irish people who helped save Shana’s life. Loop-de-loop Land! And there waiting for me is Paul Lyden, of Pat and Paul Lyden, of the famous Lydens, come to take me back to Helensburgh – a two hour drive, just past Glasgow. We wave to the Kelpies in Falkirk as we pass, the 2-headed horse sculpture depicting shape-shifting water spirits…they burst out of the ground, chiming parallel whinnies to Rex and Starlight Silver Girl, my 2- headed Hobby Horse, responding somewhat muffled from my suitcase in the boot. Their family home is a character of its own, as I step back inside a favourite chapter of my childhood. Hello house! We catch up with Pat in the sunshine, take in the beautiful garden and tea….and at day's end, I get myself a wee Scottish sunburn. Felt special. The light in Scotland is extraordinary, it’s such a reality shift. The sun sets late, and the indigo twilight, continues ‘til after 10pm Next day, I get to catch up with my golden pal, Catherine Lyden and meet her new side-kick, sweet Stanley! We’ve not seen each other since her gap year in New Zealand. We’re 16 again, jumping up and down, dancing around and ultimately, rolling on the floor laughing. Then, as is only right, we hit up the local sweet shop that I may reacquaint myself with all manner of edible treasure. Hello cola cubes! You’ve been missed. Hoola-hoops (jewellery AND sustenance). Skips! (Prawn-flavoured boy scout caps that melt on your tongue). I didn’t imagine it all, the best stuff in life is still available. Calm down. And chow down. What theatre show? It’s a background event for these first couple of days, as I enjoy the warmth and friendship of these good people and get used to new co-ordinates. Old memory stirs and clinks alongside new inspiration, comforting synchronicity, familiar information inside bendy timelines. I wake from dreams and feel so deeply rested. I can’t remember the last time I felt so rested in my own bones. It’s not just the jetlag. But these murmurs are for another post, later down the track. It gets trippy.
