I know he's not lying either cause when I first met him he was wearing a trilobite t shirt and said he has about 20 of them...and he's a paleontologist. Can you spot the real one? Amongst the two-dimensional illustrations of some of its relatives there's here a beautiful real fossil of Elrathia kingii, a Cambrian trilobite from the Wheeler Formation, North America. This is one of the most ubiquitous and recognizable trilobites. According to Gaines & Droser (2003) this particular species was adapted to low oxygen environments, possibly living in symbiosis with sulfur bacteria. Happy Trilobite Tuesday! This is my first one. It’s also hard for me to choose which trilobite to post about, so I’m going to present 2 of them. Or 3. Let’s start with the first trilobite, and one of the first fossils I ever received. It was a gift from my dad, when I was 7 or 8 years old in North Carolina. As you can see I crushed crayons 🖍️ with it back then, but not anymore. I don’t know the exact date for it, or even where it came from, but it is in a curled pose, like a roly poly. The second are these smaller, flatter specimens from Utah, it’s a species called Elrathia kingi. Now I don’t know too much about trilobites. But what I do know about these small and medium individuals is that they’re from the Cambrian, 500 million years ago. Since I do have the info card for this one, I was able to figure out that they’re from the Golden Fossil state of Utah. This same species is also found in Georgia, dating back to this period. This Elrathia kingii, normally an exceptionally common find, stands out as one of my favorite examples of this species in my collection. Despite it’s imperfections, our highlighted trilobite has a fantastically unique coloration. What was once the animal’s thin calcite shell has now been replaced with a mind blowing mineral paint job! It’s night and day when held up against a jet black Elrathia. Two cheekless Elrathia kingii molts, dyed unique shades of red and green by diagenetic processes over millions of years. Some may not value these as highly, since they’re such a common species, and molts at that - but self collecting these was such an unforgettable experience. Regardless, both specimens are fairly large for Elrathia kingii, and their exceptional coloration helps them stand out from the thousands upon thousands of dark grey and black Elrathia uncovered every year. Like most Elrathia kingii, this was uncovered in the House Range’s Wheeler Shale! These were prepped out by @fistfuloffossils. I love how he took the time to carefully reveal many molted segments left behind around the main attraction, including a PUNY cranidium to the upper left on the first image. Growin' up is hard! #Elrathia is a well-known #trilobite genus, so well known a growth series was able to be constructed from fossils! They start off super tiny and molt throughout their life. 18 growth stages are represented in this whirl. It lived 500mya in the #Cambrian of #Utah. That is a lonnnng time ago. #Allosaurus, the Late #Jurassic #theropod, is also well known. From one quarry, the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry (it can be found at the Jurassic National Monument), a growth series of Allosaurus was constructed. The femur is a useful bone as it is robust and thus has a great chance of being preserved, and they are distinct so you know when you have an Allosaurus versus a #Ceratosaurus for instance. Growth series are amongst the most important discoveries in paleontology. One can use #histology on each bone and see if they grow isometric or if they have growth spurts. Approximate age of death for each bone can be identified. This display represents growth from 3’ to over 30’. The oldest reaches nearly 30 years old. The smaller femora have longer tibiae and metatarsals, indicating a speedier existence be the adults and possibly eating nimbler prey while young. Day seven of showing you my collection of rarities. Piece 7 is a #fossil #trilobite. It belongs to the #Elrathia Kingii species and is ±507 million years old. It was found in Ohio in the US which would have been the bottom of the ocean 507 million years ago.
Elrathia kingii, Wheeler Shale, Middle Cambrian, House Range, Utah. Healed injury to upper right thorax and corner of cephalon. Even though the injury healed (note cicatrization, i.e. scar formation), the small individual (13 mm) did not live through another molting cycle, but died, leaving a complete exoskeleton behind. #trilobite #elrathia #injury #molting

When you hear the name Elrathia kingii, you will almost certainly think of the Wheeler Shale in Utah. However, these two Elrathias come from the Conasauga Shale Formation in Cedar Bluff, Alabama! Since Christmas is only days away I figured I would post about this very festive red Elrathia kingii from my personal collection. It's from the middle Cambrian Wheeler Shale in Utah and is one of my very favorite fossils. This stunning bug was collected and prepped by my good friend @afistfuloffossils. Many of you might not know that we actually knew each other in undergrad. We became friends after a weekend field trip to Dinosaur National Monument, when the guy I was sitting next to in the van got car sick only half an hour in into the six hour drive and darn near hurled chunks all over me. @afistfuloffossils switched seats with him and sat next to me for the rest of the drive up there and on the way home. It was a long drive, but we talked about everything from trilobites to music. Definitely check out his page and the awesome stuff he does!
