For this #fossilfriday let’s celebrate our beloved “common” fossils, aka Shelly Fossils 🐚🪸 🪸 In the photo you can see a beautiful fossil assemblage from the Silurian (ca 444 million years ago 👀) from the Wenlock Limestone Formation, UK. The calcareous rock is packed with the shells of brachiopods, corals, bryozoans, trilobites and other Shelly bits (swipe to see some of them labeled). 🪨 Rocks like this limestone tell us a lot of information about our geological past. For example, by looking at the fossils we know some of the organisms that were living in the sea (note: we are still missing a lot of other soft bodied organisms that do not preserve in this depositional environment). The fact that the some of the fossils are broken up (fragmented) means that the environment was quite energetic 🌊. ⏳ The Silurian is a fascinating geological time. Plants 🌱 and fungi 🍄 start their conquest of the lands (which until then where completely barren) and our fishy ancestors starts to evolve 🐟 in the oceans. Now enshrined in “post”-erity, here are some in-hunt highlights from the other day’s exhilarating VT Ordovician hunt along the shores of Lake Champlain and along and upon its uninhabited islands. While 99.9999% of the finds are still damp and precariously packed, wrapped in rags, fossiling gloves and napkins in my fossil wagon, I had a few cool pieces of those fossiliferous limestones, shales, and “shaley limestones” in the various pockets of my outerwear to share for Fossil Friday. Unfortunately the textured limestones of this formation rarely appear in photos as they do in real life, at least via iPhone camera. But when I get back to 🗽 I’ll take better pics under magnification. I may also give some slabs a very diluted coating of a Mod Podge solution to bring out the “wet” look even when dry. Stay tuned for these, and the promised NJ Cenozoic🦈 teeth and NJ Mesozoic 🌲amber🌲 pieces of several weeks ago. Sold Pentaramicrinus bimagnaramus Pterotocrinus rugosus Pentremites girtyi blastoids (4) Big Clifty Formation Crawford County, Indiana Mississippian This piece was found in the 1970’s and was obtained at an estate sale. The Pentaramicrinus crinoid is a rare genus from this location. The Pterotocrinus crinoid is unusual as it has blades between the arms. The blastoids have the feeding brachioles present and a bit of stem. Wutubus annularis is a tubular Ediacaran fossil from China. It is the only species in the genus Wutubus. The genus name was derived from the fossil locality near the village of Wuhe (Wu River) and from Latin tubus (tube), and the species epithet derived from Latin, annularis, with reference to the transverse annulae on the tube. The first described specimens of Wutubus annularis were found in the Shibantan Member of the Dengying Formation in the Yangtze Gorges area of South China, which dates to 551-541 Mya during the late Ediacaran. Specimens have since been reported in the late Ediacaran Deep Spring Formation at Mount Dunfee, Navada (USA). Wutubus annularis is an annulated (ringed) tubular organism 20-180 mm in length and 3-32 mm in width. It is mostly cylindrical, with a conical end that tapers to an apex. Fresh from Northern Ontario, Canada! I found this Rielaspis trilobite Sunday afternoon shortly after a sleet storm. Typically these are ‘cheekless’ meaning that it’s a recently molted carapace and the free cheeks (which detach along suture lines to aid the molting process) are missing. This one, I was glad to find out, is a carcass and not a molt. Due to the extremely hard rock and relatively soft trilobite shell, due care is needed when preparing specimens from this locality. Photo taken under alcohol to show shell detail plus the trilobites have never complained.
