She wished to rule independenlty, but her intellectual limitations and chronic ill health caused her to rely heavily on her ministers, who directed England's efforts against France and Spain in the War of the Spanish Succession. Although Anne was pregnant 18 times between 1683 and 1700, only 5 children were born alive, and, of these, only one, a son, survived infancy. Sadly, the child died in 1700 at the age of 11, this ended Anne's hopes of providing herself and the 3 Kingdoms (England, Scotland and Ireland) with a successor. Mary I was a Tudor Queen, who reigned for 5 years, from 1553 to 1558. She was the first โจ๏ธQueen Regnantโจ๏ธ - a Queen who rules a country as the primary monarch rather than simply as a consort. She is most commonly known for being a Catholic who burnt almost 300 protestants at the stake for refusing to convert to Catholicism during her reign. This religious persecution earned her the notorious nickname 'Bloody Mary'. The tudor Elizabeth I was crowned in 1559 Queen of England and Wales only. Mary Queen of Scots had a turbulent relationship with Elizabeth I during their adulthood, it was only when Elizabeth I died without an heir that the English crown passed to Mary's son, James VI of Scotland, he therefore became James I of England and Wales. In 1952, the first post boxes baring Elizabeth II's new cypher were unveiled. Attacks began to take place on the first post box in Edinburgh. Tar was poured over the pillar box and the cypher was attacked with a hammer. The repair was dealt with promptly but it came at a cost of, in today's money, โฌ2,200. The costly repair also did nothing to change the growing popular opinion that the boxes should be changed. In February 1953, the perpetrators wrote to the post office threatening not only the newly repaired post box, but all post office property in Scotland. The letter, signed by the Scottish Republic Army, finished with the line 'Have your English police to guard every pillar box and post office in Scotland' In 1954, the UK government decided that the new cypher would use the Crown of St Andrew, part of the regalia of the Honours of Scotland, and otherwise known as the Scottish Crown Jewels (image 2). This image of a Crown was to be used alone, without an accompanying monarch's cypher. This image was included on Queen Elizabeth II's coffin during her lying at rest in Edinburgh in September 2022. Prior to her fatherโs death Princess Beatrice was an incredibly cheeky and outspoken girl but when he died she became very withdrawn. That said on one occasion, Beatrice decided to lock her governess inside the Albert Barracks on the Osborne Estate and refused to let her out until she barked like a dog. Princess Beatrice also had a lucky escape when she slipped between the platform and the royal train. Mary was the granddaughter of Margaret, the older sister of King Henry VIII. She was the Queen of Scotland from 1543 until 1567, when she became very unpopular and was forced to abdicate. The next year she went to England, hoping to be welcomed by Elizabeth. But instead, she received a rather frosty reception, to say the least. Mary was a catholic, and many catholics thought she should be Queen of England. Elizabeth, aware that she could be a threat to her throne, kept Mary prisoner for 19 years. Many advisors encouraged Elizabeth to execute Mary, to prevent any uprisings and rebellions from people who wanted Mary on the English throne. Elizabeth refused for many years, not only was Mary family, but she was a fellow Queen, and the last thing Elizabeth wanted was to encourage the execution of monarchs. However, things changed when Francis Walsingham, one of Elizabeth's most important ministers, uncovered a plot to overthrow Elizabeth. Walsingham's spies discovered that Mary was sending messages to catholic plotters. Elizabeth could no longer put off Mary's execution. The Crown Princess of Prussia with her eldest son Prince Wilhelm, 1875 Following Wilhelm's trumatic birth he was left with a paralysed arm (now known as Erb's palsy) and although both mother and child survived it was to mark a strain on the relationship between Wilhelm and his mother Vicky. Vicky wrote to her mother "the idea of his remaining a cripple haunts me" adding that "it spoils all the pleasure and pride I should have in him". But for Vicky a cure had to be found and nothing and no one was going to get in her way thus the first ten years of Wilhelm's life was to be dominated by various treatment to cure his disability, the treatments are listed as follows - having a dead animal wrapped around the top of his arm in the hopes that the vitality of the wild animal would transfer itself onto Wilhelm's paralysed limb. This only put fear into the future Kaiser and achieved nothing :( - tying Wilhelm's good arm behind his back so it would force him to use his paralysed arm. If you don't have the muscle power in the first place then it was practically impossible. - electro therapy, shocks that were intended to jolt the limb back to life. Although traditionally this type of treatment had work Wilhelm's "injury" was on his nerves and not his muscle. - "a type of treatment (machine) that considered of putting a metal rod up his back with a belt around his waist and a kind of horse halter mask around his face". Crown Princess Victoria of Prussia in mourning for her father Prince Albert, 1862 Princess Victoria (Vicky) was particularly close to her father and was suspended to have been his favourite! But when he passed away on the 14th december 1861, Vicky was utterly shattered but was pregnant with her third child and unable to immediately join her family in England. Vicky wrote that she spent the day of her father's funeral sitting with "all dear, darling, blessed Papa's photographs on my knees, devouring them with my eyes, kissing them and feeling as if my heart would break'. In January of 1862 Vicky was sent other "dear precious relics and hair" along with a cast of Prince Albert's hand from her mother Queen Victoria which Vicky described the anguish of unpacking "It was a dreadful moment when I first saw them I thought my heart would break โ I felt quite faint! They were the 1st thing that brought home to me the dreadful reality those dear hands I was so happy to kiss so happy to hold the rings I knew so well โ all so like โ and yet thin as I had never known him.
