Mary, Queen of Scots, was born on December 8, 1542, to James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise. Her tumultuous life was marked by political intrigue, religious conflict, and personal tragedy. At just six days old, Mary became queen following her father's death, but due to her young age, Scotland was ruled by regents. As Mary grew older, her life became increasingly entangled in the power struggles of Europe. She married Francis II of France in 1558, cementing an alliance between Scotland and France. However, Francis's death in 1560 left Mary a widow at the age of 18, prompting her return to Scotland. Back in Scotland, Mary's Catholic faith clashed with the Protestantism of many of her subjects, leading to internal strife. Her reign was marred by political instability and personal drama, including her marriages to Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, and James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell. The murder of Lord Darnley, widely believed to be orchestrated by Bothwell, tarnished Mary's reputation. Ultimately, Mary's reign came to a tragic end. Forced to abdicate in 1567, she fled to England seeking the protection of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. However, Elizabeth viewed Mary as a threat to her own throne and imprisoned her for 19 years. My stop on the blog tour for Barbara Henderson’s fantastic new book, ‘The Boy, The Witch and the Queen of Scots.’ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I’m big on history, especially the history of the Kings and Queens of Scotland and Britain and loved a visit to Holyrood Palace a few years ago. So when Barbara asked if I’d do a stop on her tour, of course I jumped at the chance! The book tells the tale of young Alexander Buchan, skilled falconer, who finds himself embroiled in a scheme to spy on the newly returned Mary Queen of Scots. He soon grows fond of the Queen and fights to keep her, and himself alive throughout this captivating work of historical fiction. I love how the author has been able to include so much historical truth in the story which would make it perfect to use with middle/upper school classes who are exploring the topic of Mary Queen of Scots. It’s also nice that this book focuses on Mary’s early reign where she experienced success rather than her later, tragic demise. There’s lots of descriptive language to describe settings and these would be excellent to use during writing lessons with kids. Finally, I love that there’s a glossary of topical words and also a timeline of Mary’s life at the back of the book. Fantastic resources to be used by children. 'The Tower' is historical fiction at its finest - an absolute MUST-READ! 🏰🧡 🏰 'The Tower' by Flora Carr is about Mary Queen of Scots' time imprisoned in Lochleven Castle in Scotland. It focuses on the dynamics between the Queen, her maids (Scottish Jane & French Cuckoo) and later, her lady in waiting, Lady Seton. As they grow more & more claustrophobic, it becomes clear that nobody is coming to their rescue. Will they risk an escape??! 🌟 I cannot even begin to explain how good this was. It felt SO VIVID, like you're right there in the room with them. The women felt so viscerally real - the stress of the imprisonment, Mary's pregnancy, the fear of the men in the tower. It was so tense, especially during the escape plots. ✍️ I think a lot of the reason why this book felt so immediate is that it's written in the present tense. Not sure why present tense is so controversial in historical fiction because it works like a dream in this! 🇫🇷 We get to know the characters really well, and are shown every nuance of their relationships and how they change over time. The rivalry between the two chambermaids, Jane & Cuckoo, especially fascinated me. 🌊 Loved how Greek mythology & Scottish folklore was woven into the story. Mary Stuart is often compared to a siren & Jane to a selkie. 📚 Flora Carr herself came to the York Waterstones to talk about 'The Tower!' She's originally from York & I got to meet her (& she signed my copy!!) I enjoyed hearing how she immersed herself in the research & spent time in museums to see objects Mary would have used and touched. 🧡 Overall, this was a STUNNING piece of historical fiction which I will be recommending to everyone. Had a lovely train 🚊 trip from York to Peterborough where we were picked up by family. Peterborough Cathedral is one of the most intact large Norman buildings in England and is renowned for its imposing early English Gothic West Front which, with its three enormous arches, is without architectural precedent and with no direct successor. The cathedral has the distinction of having had two queens buried beneath its paving: Catherine of Aragon and Mary, Queen of Scots. The remains of Queen Mary were removed to Westminster Abbey by her son James I when he became King of England.

We often think about the Elizabeth I & Mary Queen of Scots story only as a competition for the English crown—one prize over which the two women battled. That is only part of the story. At the beginning of Elizabeth’s reign, there were 2 regnant queens and 2 kingdoms. At the time, most people thought even one ruling woman was unnatural, dangerous, or even “monstrous.” But the world should have realized there was room for two women rulers. #OTD in 1540, Francis Knollys and Catherine Carey married, in an apparent love match. They appear to have met when both were involved in welcoming Henry VIII’s new Queen, Anne of Cleves to England; Francis being appointed as a gentleman of the welcoming delegation and Catherine as a lady of her household, as the daughter of Mary Boleyn (and possible illegitimate daughter of Henry VIII). Francis and Catherine went on to have ?14 children, (including Lettice, Countess of Leicester); Francis recorded the dates of their birth, as well as his marriage date, in a Latin dictionary. Following the ascension of her kinswoman Elizabeth I, Catherine was appointed as a Lady of the Bedchamber, and so spent more time at court (due to Elizabeth’s dependence on her) and so separated from Francis, who himself was later given an important role in the ‘management’ and initial imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots. This separation caused disharmony between Francis and his monarch, as he was prevented from returning to his wife, when word of her illness reached him; she died in January 1569 without them being reunited. The principal subject has often been said to be a portrait of Diane de Poitiers and perhaps less likely Mary Queen of Scots. Imagine unfurling something that Mary Queen of Scots created 😮 Here is a glimpse behind the scenes today as we work on a project with @universityofstirling. This is the Blue Blanket, a saltire banner that Queen Mary and 'the four Marys' (her besties) sewed together. 👸💁‍♀️💁‍♀️💁‍♀️💁‍♀️ It is said that if Mary needed to call her loyal subjects to arms, the banner would be hung from the cross on Broad Street, Stirling. It was mostly used for ceremonial ocassions for hundreds of years, and that is why it is in such a delicate condition. ✨The Royal Apartments at Linlithgow Palace✨ 👑 During the reign of James IV (1488 -1514) the royal apartments in the palace were moved to where they can be seen today. 🏰 The main hall was on the lower level (labelled ‘1️⃣’) had a huuuge fireplace at one end and this room was where James IV would have carried out his legal work and also received visitors. 🏰 Above the main hall was most likely the Queen’s apartments (labelled ‘2️⃣’) where you can see another huge fireplace on that level. 🏰 Behind each of these rooms were narrow corridors (you can see the doorway of one on the right hand side of the fireplace, labelled ‘3️⃣’) and this would have been where the attendants would have slept. These also would have been used for serving purposes too so they were always near by to the King and Queen. 🏰 The little shelves built into the halls would have held highly valuable belongings so show off their grandeur. On this day in 1558, a Fifteen year old Mary Queen of Scots married fourteen year old Francoise, Dauphin of France in Paris. The wedding was accompanied by an agreement that will unify the crowns of Scotland and France if there are children of the marriage, and hand over the crown of Scotland to France if there are not. #OnThisDay in 1558, Mary Queen of Scots, also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, married the French Dauphin at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. At the tender age of six days, Mary ascended to the Scottish throne, thrust into a realm governed by regents amidst religious and political turbulence. Her betrothal to Francis, the Dauphin of France, at just five years old, served as both a safeguard and a strategic move, ensuring her safety from English incursions during the Rough Wooing. The same year as her betrothal, she was sent to be raised in France. Accompanied by her two illegitimate half-brothers and the "four Marys," (four peers of her age, all bearing the name Mary that hailed from esteemed Scottish lineages) and Janet, Lady Fleming, the mother of Mary Fleming and half-sister of James V, assumed the role of governess for the group. At age 15, Mary married Francis, the Dauphin of France, aged 14 at Notre Dame. Mary's wedding was a grand affair, complete with a procession and a lavish feast. She looked stunning in her silver gown and regal crown. After the ceremony, there was music, dancing, and a sumptuous supper. The celebration extended to Edinburgh, where bonfires lit up the streets in honor of the newlyweds. The Parliament of Scotland also gave its approval, cementing the bond between Scotland and France. After Henry II's death from a jousting accident, only a year later, Francis and Mary ascended the throne of France. But it would not last long... Tragically, Francis succumbed to illness and passed away in December 1560. Catherine de' Medici, his mother, took charge as regent for his younger brother, Charles IX. Mary, grieving her husband's death, returned to Scotland in August 1561 after spending nine months in France. Despite being raised in France since childhood, she faced the daunting task of navigating Scotland's intricate political landscape upon her return.
