Most of us have experienced those distressing dreams that leave us feeling uneasy, but have you ever wondered why they're called "nightmares"? The term comes from the Old English "mare," which referred to an evil spirit or goblin that was believed to sit on a sleeper's chest and cause bad dreams or feelings of suffocation. The "night" part is self-explanatory—these unsettling visions usually occur during the night. Together, "nightmare" describes the idea of a fear-inducing spirit haunting our sleep. While the original concept may sound spooky, today we simply use "nightmare" to describe an unpleasant dream or any distressing experience. What's the weirdest nightmare you've ever had? Share it with us in the comments! 🌙🌩️ #Nightmare #Etymology #WordOrigins #Language #OldEnglish #Dreams #Sleep #english

Hazelton’s “This the Dead Land” is a brilliant narrative about a girl haunted by her experiences in the church. On each read, we find new details stand out, bringing more depth to the story. We loved this piece for the Genus theme because it explores how the systems we grow up in can be inescapable. Girl is both repelled by her past and compelled to revisit it. Her conversations with Pastor reveal the significant trauma an institution can leave on a person, even if none of the scars are visible. #literaryjournal #centraldlorida #floridawriters #genus #writers #etymology #literary #publishing #journal #localzine

It’s artichoke season — a great time to savor the distinct, earthy flavor of this thistle-like plant. But beware! Artichokes have a tough, fibrous core that is difficult and unpleasant to digest. It’s thanks to this hairy core that the etymology of the word “artichoke” is itself a bit fuzzy. Early English forms of the word “artichoke” included variants like “archecokk,” “hartichock,” and “hartichoake.” The “choke” sound at the ending seemed fitting, because you could choke on the vegetable’s fuzzy center, and indeed, this hazardous bit became known as a “choke.” In time, it seemed that this explained the word’s etymology — that it must be called an “artichoke” because of its “choke.” Yet this isn’t the case at all! “Artichoke” comes from the Andalusian Arabic word الْخَرْشُوف (al-ḵaršūf), originating during a period of Arab rule in Spain. It became “alcarchofa” in Old Spanish and “articiocco” in a Northern Italian variant of Italian “arcicioffo,” eventually making its way into English. The invented story of the word’s origins is a great example of a folk etymology: a popular and logical, but ultimately inaccurate, explanation of where a word comes from. Explore a few more surprising examples at www.merriam-webster.com/grammar/folk-etymology. [ID: A pile of purple and green artichokes over text. Text reads: Artichoke — The name for this spiky in-season vegetable comes from the Andalusian Arabic word الْخَرْشُوف (al-ḵaršūf), not from the plant’s fuzzy, “choking” core.] #Etymonday #PlanetWord #DCMuseums #Etymology #WordOfTheDay #Logophile #BestWords #WordsMatter #Artichoke #FolkEtymology

Our new Word of the Week is presented to you by Sixth Formers Jack and Christopher. It's a verb that means to thrive, achieve success, prosper (just in time for this year's external exam season!) Example: The penny finally dropped, and after years of struggling with maths, Jacob started to positively flourish and achieved his target grade. Origin: Middle English florisshen "to put forth flowers, bloom, prosper”; borrowed from Anglo-French florir, "to bloom, grow abundantly, thrive", going back to the Latin verb flōrīre, to begin to flower, gain in strength". #wordoftheweek #word #words #wordlovers #vocabulary #vocabularybuilding #etymology #learning #growing #thriving #staloysiuscollege

The act of deliberately causing damage or disruption has a surprising origin story. The word "sabotage" comes from the French word "sabot," meaning "wooden shoe." It is believed to have originated during the Industrial Revolution in France, when disgruntled workers would throw their wooden shoes, or "sabots," into machinery to damage it and halt production as a form of protest. The idea of "sabotage" has since evolved to mean any deliberate act of destruction or interference. From industrial sabotage to modern-day cyber attacks, it's a term that's as relevant as ever. Have you ever witnessed or experienced sabotage? How did it affect you? The term we use to describe those little bits of interesting or obscure knowledge has an origin that's anything but trivial! "Trivia" comes from the Latin word "trivium," which literally means "a place where three roads meet." In ancient times, these crossroads were where people often exchanged news, gossip, and random information. Over time, "trivia" came to refer to information that wasn't necessarily important but was still intriguing and fun to share. World Tapir Day is a great excuse to talk about this incredible genus of beautifully-snouted mammal :) South American tapirs (Tapirus terrestris) are the only 1 of the 4 species of tapir around the world NOT classed as Endangered, but are classed as Vulnerable. They are keen swimmers, living near rivers, swamps and lakes, in rainforests... and relying on water for safety, using it to hide from predators (the powerful Jaguar). With a serious strength and a built-in crash helmet at the back of their skull, they have a great series of natural defences. Habitat loss and hunting are their main threats, What's in a name?: - "Tapir / Tapirus" comes from the native South American (Tupi) language "tapyra"... meaning "thick". - "terrestris" from Latin "from the earth", using the word "terra". The term comes from the Vandals, a Germanic tribe that played a significant role in the fall of the Roman Empire. In 455 CE, they famously sacked Rome, leaving a trail of chaos and ruin. Since then, the name "Vandal" has become synonymous with acts of senseless destruction or desecration. It's interesting how the legacy of a historical tribe lives on in our language today. The Sanskrit word śakti is a popular conception in Yoga and many people are fascinated by it. It’s often interpreted as ‘feminine power,’ which is certainly one of its better known definitions. However, what is śakti‘s deeper meaning? Śakti comes from the Sanskrit root śak, which means ‘to be strong or powerful, to be able or capable or competent.’ From this, śakti has come to mean regal power, divine power, or even a special talent. However, there are other definitions which can also help us to understand śakti. It can mean the efficacy of a remedy in medicine, the inherent power of a word or mantra, or a weapon. My favourite definition is the one from the nyāya tradition: the inner power of a cause to produce an effect. It’s the potential energy that we all have for doing something meaningful in the world that completely accords with who we are. We hear this term often when talking about learning a trade or craft, but did you know where it comes from? The word "apprentice" has roots in the Old French word "aprendre," meaning "to learn." It also has connections to the Latin "apprehendere," meaning "to seize or grasp." In medieval times, an apprentice was a young person who agreed to work with a master craftsman to learn a skill or trade. This arrangement often lasted several years, during which the apprentice would live with the master and receive training in exchange for labor. Today, the concept of apprenticeship still holds, with apprenticeships being valuable pathways for learning specialized skills through hands-on experience. 🛠️ Have you ever had an apprenticeship or learned a skill from a mentor? 💙Sometimes it can feel like an all or nothing scenario, but very few families can go all in on the recommendations for their kids. There aren’t enough resources to make it happen, whether it’s time, money, work leave, sibling care or available providers! 🌷So, start with one thing, and celebrate that step. Checking it off your list will help you feel better, and keep you moving forward. ✅Schedule an evaluation, even if it’s months out ✅Contact a provider about openings ✅Tell a close friend or two how they can support you ✅Ask community/parent groups for recommendations and resources ✅Schedule breaks for you to rejuvenate whenever possible ✅Prioritize your family’s health, love, connection, rest & peace by saying no to non-priorities. (Sometimes you need to shelter in place a bit to protect yourself!) 🐢Remember that this is a marathon, not a sprint. Take the pace you can handle, grab the waters along the way, and ask for help. 💙 You can do this! Marcel's forever bringing up that 'something Persian' about the church at Balbec, now to Elstir. « I spoke to him of those great statues of saints, which, mounted on scaffolds, formed a sort of avenue on either side... I told him also that I had gone there expecting to find an almost Persian building, and that this had doubtless been one of the chief factors in my disappointment.» And lo and behold Elstir responds: « 'Indeed, no,' he assured me, 'it is perfectly true. Some parts of it are quite oriental; one of the capitals reproduces so exactly a Persian subject that you cannot account for it by the persistence of Oriental traditions. The carver must have copied some casket brought from the East by explorers.' And he did indeed shew me, later on, the photograph of a capital on which I saw dragons that were almost Chinese devouring one another, but at Balbec this little piece of carving had passed unnoticed by me in the general effect of the building which did not conform to the pattern traced in my mind by the words, 'an almost Persian church.'» Odd response. A casket brought from the East, capitals, a dragon, Persian influence... I've written about this before in relation to excerpts in the last pages of the first volume of A L'Ombre (March 16) - my weird post re mutilated saints lol. But these columns! Treasures brought over from the East The dragon associated with St Theodore. The casket with St Mark. The pink granite of Saint Theodore's mentioned as appearing in Elstir's painting (slide two).... It's odd. Next post : a look into the painting's Place-Name! 🖌️ Antonio Joli, The Piazzetta and the Libreria di San Marco, Venice, Santa Maria della Salute beyond
