Day 21 - May 18, 2018 part 1 of 2 We are both up well before the alarm. Breaking down camp, except the tent to which we sit and eat breakfast and hot chocolate. It rained heavy during the night. As we place the canoe in the water and begin to load up the canoe we can hear a weird hissing sound. Panicked we unload and bring the canoe out, flipping it we discover a huge, deep gash. A little perplexed as to how we didn’t see it just this morning when draining water or yesterday when loading and unloading the boat. We dry off the scratches and cover with the trusty gorilla tape. All we can do for now. Back on the water and we are greeted by calmness and gorgeous cliffs. The rock towers above us with hues of orange, brown and deep reds. The cliffside is scattered with incredible caves as well and bird scat cements the edges. We stop on a dock at one of the many habitats in the area and enjoy a fresh lunch of wraps and as I wander a little a snake appears. This one is sleek, dark green with a light green strip. Its gorgeous but by the time i am back with the camera the snake is nowhere in sight. We press on. Another long line of cliffs infront of us just as we hear the crack of thunder beside us. We look over our shoulders to see the storm, chasing us down and we hustle to get beyond the cliffs. We push past the inflow of another river and we see the heavy rain over take the bridge we were just under. A small beach, it looks flat up top. We pull off and scout it out. Lets get camp up before the storm. We are quick sit in the tent and look outside. A few rain drops and then nothing. It was around 3 when we stopped, Neither of us having realized it was so early. We relax, I work on photos and walk around and then I try out the VSSL stove for rice and soup. Worked well. Day 19 - May 16, 2018 A beautiful wake up in quit campground. Warm sunrise breaking the coolness of night. Full bellies of pizza and treats to help with sleep last night. Our first day upon the Snake River. It’s narrower than the Columbia and so far today it appears more like we are entering in the countryside. A rolling lip to the small river valley flattens out and spans the horizon, reminds me more of growing up on the prairies than any other landscape so far and I take in the endless sky with its textured clouds. It’s not long till we feel the distinctive current of a coming dam, now all too familiar for us and we work our way as far as we can up the shoreline. Finally pulling along the rocks and where the brush eases. We find the gravel road easily atop that we could see on the map as our portage route. As we finish hauling gear up to it a pilot ship fights the current as well to push a barge up and over the locks. It’s not a long portage and fairly flat, however, this canoe cart broke on our first portage of the trip and on a bumpy gravel road like today’s, it’s only just, kinda helping. We have to do multiple trips with gear and the canoe with the cart unable to hold more than the canoe and even that is a stretch at this point. Along the route eagles watch us from a nest and a rattlesnake on the ground shacks, hisses and lunges protecting a mouse it’s killed. Scared the poop out of me as it coiled a mere foot from mine. Once we reach Ice Harbor dam there is a nice smooth curved road down to a boat launch to push off. We sit and eat some lunch here before setting back out. Not far to a park we had been told about to camp at tonight and it’s another quit spot with just us pitching our tent on a beautifully manicured hill, under some large maple trees. I wander the park till sunset where I’m sent off to bed by beautiful pinks and purples cascading through the clouds and glowing in the distant rain. I am beyond excited for tomorrow when we will be meeting up with friends from VSSL who plan to meet us along the river! Can’t wait! Goodnight Neverland!

Day 18 - May 15, 2018 I almost can not find words to explains lastnight… … the trains, oh the trains. I swear they were on holiday yesterday, but then all were making their way to some train convention through the night. Nonstop! It was by far the worst sleep I’ve ever experienced camping. The train would jolt us awake with an absolute fright, light streaming in the tent like we had somehow moved onto the tracks and were about to be run over. It was not fun, so at first light we are out of the tent getting ready to move on, as more trains blow by. Heading off we are careful to stay atop the drift wood and mind our footing after yesterday evening’s rattlesnake encounters. Setting off into the calm water I can truly take in and observe the landscape. Changing yet again to almost natural stepped pyramids, it has been fascinating to witness the changing ecosystems and ecology, I can not wait to see what more this expedition shall bring! Morning comes and goes in a daze, probably from the lack of sleep, and come afternoon we are paddling hard to jut out into current and around docks, now on the outskirts of the tri cities, which funny enough is actually considered four cities. With three rivers coming together here, the Columbia, the Yakima and our next water way, the Snake River. We have a large crossing after passing under multiple unique bridges that show us we are nearly there. We cut a big angled ferry across and up to Sacajawea state park, where we rested for a moment and took in a little history checking out a dugout canoe perched on display. We don’t paddle much farther till we pull in to Hood park. A gorgeous campground to which we meet with a park ranger who allows us to stay there (it’s off season still and things are closed) and then she introduces us to the camp host who offers up laundry and a ride to pick up some supplies. Beautiful introduction to the Snake River! . 【Tramily's Report】 ツナグタドル京都北山(オリジナルルート) Happy Trails #Repost @zayu_chans with @use.repost ・・・ . 2024.04.22-04.24 <ツナグタドル京都北山> 鯖街道の起点は、小浜や高浜。 終点は出町が有名だが、周山、雲ヶ畑、鷹峯、鞍馬など各地にある。 食べ物だけではなく、人や文化も運んだ鯖街道 そして、京都北山エリアはたくさんの集落がある（あった）。 だとすれば、各地の終点から集落へつなぐ生活道があったはず。その道、峠をたどってみたい。 もう一つ。 ここ数年ずっと気になっていた北山中央分水嶺。 この尾根道にある巨木達を見に行きたい。 そして繋がったのが、小浜-おにゅう峠-三国岳-佐々里峠-卒塔婆峠-雲ヶ畑、 鯖街道針畑越え-高島トレイル-北山分水嶺-雲ヶ畑街道を歩く欲張りなルート。 ーーーーーーーーーー DAY 1 始発で自宅を出てバスで小浜駅へ。鯖街道起点へ寄り、まずはロードを15km。 針畑越えへ向かう入り口付近のコンビニで食料の補給。 水は鵜の瀬。 道中の神社仏閣がとても立派で、既に昔からの文化のニオイがプンプンする。 下根来、上根来を経て遠敷峠へ淡々と九十九折りにタドル。 ここからは高島トレイル。今日はどこまで行けるか。 宿泊地は明確には決めてない。 初めての高島トレイル。 霧も相まって幻想的な森が続く。 ハンモッカーには魅力的な地形が続いて、あちこち気になって仕方がない。 植生も面白く、ずっと後回しにしていた高島トレイルスルーハイクもしたくなってきた。 進めば進むほどどんどん魅力を増す森。 三国峠に着く頃には、そろそろ寝床を決めなければいけない時間。 峠下の東家まで行くか、出来ればハンモックを張りたいが・・・ 模索しながら三国峠を下る途中に、ちょうど良いポイントを見つけ今日はハンモック泊。 今日は福井県から滋賀県に入った。 明日はいよいよ楽しみにしていた北山分水嶺をタドル。 #鯖街道 #高島トレイル #関西トレミリー #小浜 #おにゅう峠 #三国峠 #福井 #中央分水嶺 #北山分水嶺 #古道 #ハンモック泊 #縦走 #針畑越え #ハイキング #低山ハイク #遠敷 #exped #ハンモック #ハンモック泊 #hammock #hammocksforhiker #京は遠ても十八里 @kansai_tramily_podcast
