Our next highlight crop on the farm is MUMS! ๐ผ๐ธ๐ผ๐ธ๐ผ๐ธ๐ผ๐ธ๐ผ๐ธ๐ผ๐ธ๐ผ๐ธ We call them the โoriginalโ crop of Syme Family Farm because Bill began growing them back in his high school days in the 1980โs. He started his mum business as his SAE (supervised agricultural experience) while he was a member of the Future Farmers of America at Rockville High School. His mum business/project earned him the National Floriculture Proficiency award in FFA. A LOT has changed in how the mums are grown. Bill used to raise them in the ground and have to dig and pot each plant up in the fall, digging them up was always a huge shock to their root system. Also in a drought year it was very difficult to water them efficiently. Now we grow them in pots with drip irrigation that delivers both fertilizer and water efficiently. Itโs not always true that a great flower arrangement should be full with flowers in abundance. Neither is it true that an arrangement with less flowers should always cost less. Working with the seasons and local availability is a challenge if you stay within the box. Exploring new ways to add colors and textures that are naturally around you can help with suppressing that instinct of grabbing more florals. This arrangement started with a vase provided by the customer. The transformation started with bee waxed fall leaves because why notโฆitโs in season ๐คฃ. The design didnโt take shape all at once. The intent wasnโt to create a double helix either but does look like one at certain angle. ๐ . Our main florals?
