All The Trimmings. . I’m taking a little sit down break from IG this weekend, as I’m off to celebrate my best friends wedding. . Recently I feel I’ve lost my outside sparkle for various reasons, so the preparation for this event has been epic to say the least. Hair done, Tanning in stages the last few nights, painted toe nails, fingernails painted. A dress try on marathon, actually bought three new dresses as couldn’t decide, and then opted for a green lace number I bought last year which still had the tags on! What is Wabi? Wabi can be explained as a philosophy that eschews the superficial and extravagant and instead honours emptiness, natural simplicity and imperfection. In Japanese Buddhism, understanding these principles is considered the first step to satori or enlightenment. Wabi is something you inherently feel deep within yourself, so it can be challenging to put into words because you subjectively experience it. As H E Davey wrote, the world of wabi “hints at a sort of beauty best exemplified by nature or natural surroundings”. Whereas sabi, often uttered in the same breath, is an aesthetic ideal that can be applied to all art forms. What some might call imperfections, signs of age such as rich patina, rust, oxidisation, and slowly creeping mosses, all of which show the effects of the passage of deep time, are all indicators of sabi. What are the deciding factors when you buy fresh flowers? Do you prefer a bouquet of a single type and colour or a mixed bouquet? Is it usually the cost, colour, flower type, symbolism, fragrance, quality or the freshness that catches your eye? Or is it situational? The reason I am asking this question is because it got me thinking when I was doing a bit of research about red carnations. The research led me to the symbolism of this flower. Apparently, the deep red represents a deep love and affection. To be honest with you, I never think of what the flower represents. I tend to just go for the colour, cost, quality and freshness. The type of flower I choose is based on what is available and how I plan to use it in my photography. For today’s red carnation flat lay I used a black silk ribbon and black scissors as props.
