This is an exercise on single jumps I do when I am trying to feel the lift and arch of the jump... it's very fun actually. What I am thinking about: Aim jump direction with a big free leg knee, make sure to roll through to toe pick on take off foot and then try to put my right knee inside the back of the left knee. And don't drop the right side, keeping pulled up all the way till landing. Forward Perimeter Power Stroking with Forward Inside Brackets This exercise works your edge control and your brackets! Do a forward power stroke and on the hold of the power stroke, you are going to do a bracket at the top of the circle. Once you do the bracket you are going to stay on the circle and cross your free leg in front and step forward and start another set of the power stroke with bracket. Backwards Perimeter Power Stroking Edge Exercise This exercise will help you get comfortable with that back inside edge. Typically in the moves tests, this back inside edge is a main issue that needs to be fixed. This exercise helps you get used to stepping on that back inside edge. Key points: 🔑 step onto the inside edge Here’s how we do it: 1️⃣ do the crossover of your backward perimeter power stroke. Make sure your crossover has a good edge. This will set you up for a good inside edge 2️⃣ as you hold that undercut of the crossover, you will take the free leg and step out into the back inside edge 3️⃣ you are going to hold that inside edge one full circle around. Shelly’s Skating Tips: In today’s tip we are going to be going over an off ice exercise for your axel! This exercise works your take off, specifically pin pointing the lift and step over. You will need a step or set of stairs for this exercise. Here’s how we do it: Best spot to do this exercise is on a set of stairs. You will start with jumping onto one stair and then gradually move up to two and possibly 3 if you’re getting good lift. You are going to bring your arms and free leg back as if you are going into your axel and swing them through as you jump in the air. You are only going to rotate a half rotation in the air. You will land on the stair on your right leg facing the bottom of the stair and you will be in your step over position in that h. Your goal is to get into that step over quickly so by the time you land on the stair you are in that h position. Be sure that you do not sacrifice the lift of the jump. We must have that lift! If you’re rocking it with just one stair, try skipping 2, then 3! Be sure to give this a try and post to your story! Shelly’s Skating Tips: In today’s tip we are going to be going over an off ice exercise that you may not have experienced before. These are the One Leg Butt Kickers. This exercise is not only great for building your legs to get lift in your jumps, but this is great for working on your quickness as well. Here’s how we do it: Basically you are hopping on one foot. As you are jumping, you can swing/lift with the free leg as if it’s like you’re running or lifting into a jump, only with one leg. When you hop, your goal is to spring up into the air as high as you can and take the jumping foot and kick your butt with it as you are up in the air. Do this multiple times in a row. If you need to start with only a few, that’s ok! Just be sure to do both sides! Be sure to give this a try and post to your story! Toe loop exercise! •••This exercise will help with the proper take off for the toe loop. One of the biggest mistakes with toe loop for the beginner is the take off. Sometimes skaters will accidentally do a toe waltz jump or toe axel instead of the proper toe loop. ••• First you will do you toe loop entry. Make sure you have properly checked upper body. When you’re ready to go back for the pick, you will let your body pivot around into the back pivot. You will pivot one time around and then kick your right foot through for the jump. When you kick your right foot through to jump, it is important to not turn your toe forward but to kick your foot through as if you’re kicking a soccer ball. ••• Comment below and tag friends who can use this exercise! Are you working on your back scratch and having trouble getting that nice cross position? This exercise will help you get the cross position and this is the first piece of the puzzle! Be sure to check out my video in the bio for the step by step process to get that backscratch. You are going to go into a basic back spin and hold it. When you feel comfortable on your foot and feel your shoulders and hips facing forward, you are going to take your free leg and bring the foot out in front slightly to cross your ankle over your skating leg. This is the first part of the position for the backscratch! Once you get more comfortable with the crossed position, you can work on slowly sliding your heel down your skating leg to create the full backscratch. Having some trouble with your toe loop? • Here is an exercise to help with getting the timing down. Please note this is from the left outside 3 turn entry with a right back outside step back. if you are a lefty skater, this will be opposite. • On a circle, do the left outside 3 turn into a right back outside edge (position like a the check out of a jump or spin) and just repeat 3 times and on the last one do a toeloop from the right back outside edge. When doing the toe loop, keep that same timing that you had in the previous 3 turns into that back outside edge. Also keep in mind your left arm will be in front during the 3 turn and I to the back outside edge.
