❓Would you know how to help a child having an asthma attack? 🔷Asthma is a medical condition that affects the airways – the tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. When someone has an asthma attack, these tubes become enflamed and narrowed, making it difficult to breathe in and out. 🔷Someone having an asthma attack will have difficulty breathing and speaking, and may cough and wheeze. They may be very anxious and distressed as they struggle to breathe. In serious cases, their lips and finger nails may turn greyish-blue because of a lack of oxygen in their body. 🔷If a child has an asthma attack sit them up (do not lie them down) and help them to take their inhaler. They can take one or two puffs every 30 or 60 seconds up to 10 puffs. 🔷A baby or child having an asthma attack should use a spacer to help them take their medication. A spacer, like the one pictured, is a hollow cylinder that attaches to an inhaler. 🔷Did you know it’s possible for eczema to be become infected? 🔷As atopic eczema can cause your child’s skin to become cracked and broken, there's a risk of the skin becoming infected with bacteria particularly if they are scratching the area. 🔷Signs of a bacterial infection can include: 🔹fluid oozing from the skin 🔹a yellow crust on the skin surface 🔹small yellowish-white spots appearing in the eczema 🔹the skin becoming swollen and sore 🔹feeling hot and shivery and generally feeling unwell 🔷Your normal symptoms may also get rapidly worse and your eczema may not respond to your regular treatments. 🔷You should see a doctor as soon as possible if you think your or your child's skin may have become infected. 🔷They'll usually prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection, as well as making sure the skin inflammation that led to the infection is well controlled. 👩⚕️Speak to a GP if these do not help or your symptoms get worse. 🧴Once your infection has cleared, a GP will prescribe new supplies of any creams and ointments you're using to avoid contamination. Old treatments should be disposed of. Anaphylaxis is a severe, life threatening allergic reaction, leading to the swelling of the airways, circulatory collapse and heart failure. It can come on at any age. ⭐️ Triggers include nuts, fish, wasp and bee stings, medication, fruit and latex ⭐️ Symptoms usually start within 3 to 60 mins - swollen eyes, lips, hands, tongue - difficulty breathing - rash or hives - sudden feeling of anxiety - unresponsiveness ⭐️ Use an adrenaline auto-injector if the person has one immediately, call 999 and lie person down flat. A busy week at both Stock C Of E Primary School & Brightside Primary School in #billericay It was a pleasure to visit both schools and teach the children life saving first aid skills ⛑️❤️🩹 At Stock school I ran sessions for the Reception children all the way up to the year 6’s. For Reception the focus was on safely getting help, making a 999 call & the correct treatment for burns, nosebleeds & how to help someone with a broken arm. The older children at both schools also learnt the primary survey, how to place someone into the recovery position, how to carry out CPR chest compressions and defibrillator awareness. The children at our Vabukori LLC today had a visit from St John Ambulance educators Junior Vai Boi and Lorina Kulala. The session started with a shared reading of the Pharmacist reader led by Junior. The children were very engaged and answered numerous questions on identifying various images in the book including ambulances, first aid kits and ambulance officers. Junior also used props provided by BbP to further explain the interior of the ambulance and contents of a first aid kit. The children also learnt the First Aid emergency response for what to do for a snake bite victim. A teddy bear, named John by the team, was used to demonstrate bandaging techniques. Hi everyone. Please use this text for the head bump post as there’s a typo in the previous version: Head bumps Because if they cry straight away you know they haven’t lost consciousness. If a child bangs their head and they don’t cry immediately or if you’re not sure whether or not they did you should get them checked over by a medical professional. Loss of consciousness following a blow to the head could indicate a serious head injury or concussion. Other signs of a serious head injury include: Pale, clammy skin Memory loss Repeated episodes of vomiting Dilated pupils Sudden swelling or bruising around the eyes or behind the ears Seizure Clear fluid leaking from the nose or ears Problems with speech or co-ordination Drowsy and difficult to wake If any of these symptoms are present immediate medical help should be sought. 🔷Chicken pox is doing the rounds again at the moment. Here’s how to spot it and the do’s and don’ts when it comes to treating it. 🔷An itchy, spotty rash is the main symptom of chickenpox. It can be anywhere on the body. 🔷Chickenpox happens in 3 stages. But new spots can appear while others are becoming blisters or forming a scab. 🔷Stage 1: small spots appear The spots can: be anywhere on the body, including inside the mouth and around the genitals, which can be painful spread or stay in a small area be red, pink, darker or the same colour as surrounding skin, depending on your skin tone be harder to see on brown and black skin 🔷Stage 2: the spots become blisters The spots fill with fluid and become blisters. The blisters are very itchy and may burst. 🔷Stage 3: the blisters become scabs The spots form a scab. Some scabs are flaky while others leak fluid. We had another great First Aid awareness session with Lorine and Junior from the @st_john_png education team at our Koki Market LLC. We first read our When I Grow Up I want to be a Paramedic, and the children learnt about bandaging of cuts, management of bleeding and snake bites. They also included shake breaks and sang “Heads, shoulders, knees and toes”, which the students have been singing this week with the theme of “Bodies”. The children greatly enjoyed looking at the educational toys to relate back to what they had just read about in the Paramedic reader. The students were curious and excited to see the items up close and touch and feel their contents. They happily echoed the siren sound of the mini ambulance and recalled what number to call in case of an emergency_111.
