sad news RIP Richard Tandy Electric Light Orchestra keyboard payer Richard Tandy has died, aged 76, his longstanding bandmate Jeff Lynne has confirmed. In a statement on social media this evening, Lynne said, “It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of my long-time collaborator and dear friend Richard Tandy. He was a remarkable musician and friend and I’ll cherish the lifetime of memories we had together. Sending all my love to Sheila and the Tandy family. Jeff Lynne” Tandy was notably the only member of the band who featured in all three incarnations, alongside Lynne. He joined ELO in 1971, a year after their formation, and remained until Lynne disbanded the group in 1986, following that year’s Balance Of Power album. Harrison co-wrote the song with Jeff Lynne, who also co-produced the track. The recording references the psychedelic sound that the Beatles had helped popularise in 1967, through its use of sitar, cello, and backwards-relayed effects. Harrison’s former Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr is among the other musicians on the track. The single was accompanied by an innovative music video, directed by the partnership of Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. On B-side is : One Summer Dream (Face The Music) Jeff Lynne said: “It was dark and misty for 2 weeks, and I didn’t come up with a thing. Suddenly the sun shone and it was, ‘Wow, look at those beautiful Alps.’ I wrote Mr. Blue Sky and 13 other songs in the next 2 weeks” The song’s arrangement has been called “Beatlesque”, bearing similarities to Beatles songs “Martha My Dear” and “A Day in the Life”, while harmonically it shares its unusual first four chords and harmonic rhythm with “Yesterday”.
