It was the first fire company in Alexandria: The Friendship Fire Company, circa 1774. I wrote a bit about their fire house and its historic equipment last week—here’s what some of it looks like. The star of the show is the elaborate Prettyman Hose Carriage (1858), decorated with the company’s shaking-hands symbol and pictures of two of its members who died fighting fires. I thought the bells at the front were interesting—as the carriage was pulled across Alexandria’s cobblestones, they sounded the alarm, put in motion by the bumpy road. There are also leather buckets, worn and misshapen. Before the invention of fire engines, people organized double lines from the fire to the water source: buckets passed from hand to hand up one line to the fire, then handed down the other to be filled. After engines came into use, “bucket brigades” were still used, but now the buckets were emptied into the engine's reservoir, and then forced out by pumping through a nozzle onto the flames. Tin or brass speaking trumpets were used to scream out commands, and glass fire grenades were thrown into a fire hard enough to break and release their contents, usually water mixed with soda. On the second floor is a room with Company memorabilia and two curious poles by the window. Alexandria has a rich history tied to fires and firefighting. The Friendship Fire Company started as a volunteer fire company in 1774. Early laws in Alexandria mandated that each home had to have at least one bucket per floor. This was at a time when bucket brigades were used to fight fires. The original companies were comprised of volunteers and made money from the membership dues that the volunteers paid. The Friendship Firehouse pictured here was completed on July 23, 1855. It is still standing tall on S. Alfred Street. It has been used as a museum where visitors can see fire equipment and one of the old horse drawn hose reels. It has also had an old horse drawn pumper in the past. If you look at the cupola, those were traditionally used to hang and dry the fire hoses before they were made of rubber. At Alexandria History Tours, we incorporate fire history into our tours. We show where one of the oldest fire houses, Relief Fire House is located on Prince Street. Relief Firehouse was built in 1853, so it predates the Friendship Firehouse by two years. But Friendship was the oldest company formed in Alexandria. The Friendship Fire Company was established in 1774 as the first firefighting organization in Alexandria, VA and their equipment was stored at Market Square until they built this historic firehouse in 1855. After the Civil War, the Friendship Firehouse was extensively remodeled and the cupola replaced its original steeple. The cupola, with its distinctive weather vane, housed the fire bell which sounded the alarm when fires were discovered. THIS WEEK IN ALEXANDRIA HISTORY On June 4, 1870, the Friendship Firehouse on South Alfred Street (built 1855) was reported to be in structurally unsound condition, requiring the removal of all fire equipment stored in the building. Although the building had only been constructed fifteen years earlier, the massive steeple that then topped the building was often battered by high winds, twisting the small structure below and allowing rain water to penetrate the roof and framing. This issue, coupled with deferred maintenance during the Civil War period, required that the tall steeple be replaced by a lower cupola. Although the new cupola was an improvement, twisting and weather infiltration continued to plague the building for decades. It was only rectified when the cupola was restored and strengthened by the City of Alexandria in 2010. Hidden in a holly bush near Christ Church in Old Town, this sign is a remnant of the early days of road signage. Many of the first road signs after the invention of the automobile were placed by AAA. Founded in 1902 in Chicago, AAA began to use iron signs after World War I. Prior to that the signs they placed were wooden and often didn't last long. Ultimately though most of the metal signs did not survive either due to the scrap metal drives of World War II, when iron and steel were collected to be melted down for war material. Friendship Firehouse. This Firehouse was built in 1855 and it was remodeled in 1871, later during 1992 was restored to the current look. This building was created for The Friendship Fire Company that was established in 1774, as the 1st volunteer fire company for the Old town in the city of Alexandria, VA, U.S.A. Today the building is a museum that stores the preserved equipment of that era like the old fire engine. I live very few blocks away from this beautiful building so it took me 3 days visiting it and sketching for about 1 hour each day to a total of 3.5 hrs.
