THE LIVES OF ÉTAÍN This piece depicts the themes and symbols around the character of Étaín from Tochmarc Étaíne and her various transformations throughout the tale. The two faces depict Étaín's two incarnations a thousand years apart, flanked by suns and moons to represent that "all time is made up of days and nights." The swan and fly represent Étaín's two animal forms, while the cup and pitcher represent the cup of the wife of Étar, and Étaín's skill at serving drink, by which Eochaid seeks to recognize her. Finally, the vegetation and swirling billows on the outside of the frame symbolize the "fragrant and wonderous herbs" of Aengus's crystal sun-bower, and Fuamnach's magical winds. This was my submission to the late Ralph Kenna's EÍRÍ art project through the Irish Post in 2022, based on the prompt of Evoking Ireland's Resiliant Female Icons. The Wooing of Étaín is one of my favorite Irish myths, and I've always wanted to take a crack at representing some of the themes of the story. Hello everyone, it's been quite a while! Home. I have been feeling an increasing longing for the mountains of my birth town - their snowy tops in the winter, the mist clinging to the evergreen trees like lace, the pale blues rising and pinks blushing as the dawn comes, and the deep purples casting eerie shadows when the Sun sets on the valley. I think about the shooting stars turning edelweiss as they fall to earth, adorning the Fairy Queen’s crown. She tests the purity of the heart of Her many suitors, Her skin icy, Her ivory hands - oh, how She dwells in caves and grottos, protecting the glaciers and shepherds alike (or perhaps it is the Virgin ? Who knows). Her face - comely one side, frightful on the other, how She is both the crone and the maiden depending on who is deserving to see - how She sinks cities under the cold, cold surface-mirror of the lake on Christmas Eve if one fails to be generous and refuses Her shelter. I think about the frost, like cracking glass, white flowers blooming on the windows, turning grass into knives. Home. Ancestors. Bones. Warmth. Venus first and last. The mountains - silent sentinels, so many legends and stories I do not know. I do not know. I have started a new project. I announced on my other account @the.queer.druid that I would be starting to make “ogham orra” or magical/spiritual charms/amulets with ogham and other Celtic symbols. Pictured here is the word “OR” (meaning magical prayer, or incantation) in ogham over an image of the Pictish Beast. This was just a prototype, and may not reflect the final outcome. Also pictured here are some blanks I picked up to paint the ogham orra on. The final image is of two candles with symbols painted on them. This was a spell I worked to seek out a new career since I got laid off. It is described in the tale as an ominous barrow, not unlike an ancient burial mound - a cave or grave, where the hero comes to meet their fate. It is the free association I draw between this place and the hollow hills or sí of Celtic lands, where the Pale Ones are said to dwell, that gave the website its name. The Greene Chapel alludes to a wilder faith, and to the green landscape of the Isles as well as to the peaks and depths of Alpine mountains and lakes - both of which I call home. ✨️💧Cross Quarter Waters💧✨️ {This is a bit of an updated version of a blog post I did in 2012. Just in time for the the astronomical Lughnasadh and Imbolc 🙂 photo of the Wayside Well in Kildare} During the cross quarters there are traditions of collecting water, whether it be from dew on a leaf or cloth, a holy well, or by leaving a bowl out to collect rain. Below you will see some of these traditions found in Ireland, Scotland & the Isle of Man, and I will share some of the ways that I collect water and what I use it for. If I am able to collect enough water, I like to keep it in glass bottles to work with throughout the year. Now that I've been lucky enough to gather water from holy wells in Ireland, I will leave some of that out during the full moon of each cross quarter too for the same purpose. The Cailleach in America, especially the Appalachians. The “Old Woman/Witch of the Wilds”. I feel Her presence here in the Kentucky region of the Appalachians and its foothills. These mountains are one of the oldest in the world (above sea level), and once formed part of a single mountain range connected right through part of Ireland, Scotland, and up into Scandinavia. These mountains are Her, the Cailleach: its heights and hollers are Her leaps and landings, its meanders and meadows sites of dream and song. The Cailleach: ancient, primal, pre-Celtic ancestral spirit/goddess who is creatrix and destroyer, shaper of landscapes and storms, protector of wild nature and guardian of its balance with the human world, the archetype of the shamanic old wise-woman healer (“bean feasa” in Gaelic), stern but a bearer of wisdom and truth. Here in the Diaspora, She is being experienced by many others with whom I have spoken about this as the “Antlered Mother” (Her mythos is evolving in this imagery as with Flidais and Elen of the Ways), and that is the form She takes for me here in Kentucky. So many Scottish, Irish, and Scots-Irish folk settled in the Appalachians; we are the descendants of these immigrants, connected in cultural heritage. What is the place of sacred sites within the landscape in our mythology as Celtic Pagans in the Diaspora? Mythology isn’t “old” or “new”; it’s timeless. Something to consider in the context of a living mythology in relationship with the landscape where you live now. What are the sacred sites where you live? How is your relationship with the landscape where you live in the Diaspora part of the living stream of mythology as a Celtic Pagan? How have the stories and motifs of your gods and goddesses, spirits, and ancestors evolved in relationship to the landscape where you currently live? Pluck the Yarrow fair. 🌸🌷🍃🌿🌼 In Gaelic lore, it is often the bean feasa, the wise woman, who is most respected for knowledge of herbs. Such knowledge is customarily attributed as a gift from the Good Folk, i.e. “fairies”. There are many beliefs about the right, and wrong, ways to harvest herbs, such as the proper time of day or night, the most auspicious season or phase of the moon, with which hand to pluck an herb, and the correct charm to sing when harvesting. Even in the Christian era, the healing power of herbs was clearly experienced as being a gift from Nature. In Irish mythology, the goddess Airmid is associated with herbalism. Along with her father, Diancecht, and her brothers Miach and Cian, she is part of a family of healer gods of the Tuatha Dé Danann. The story of how herbs became the purview of Airmid goes as follows: “After her father, Diancecht, slew her brother Miach in a fit of jealousy because he crafted a living arm for the god-king Nuada, Airmed wept over her brother's grave. Watered by her tears, all the healing herbs of the world (365 in number - according to the number of Miach's joints and veins) sprung from the earth over Miach's body, and Airmed collected and organized them all, spreading them on her cloak. Once again, in a fit of jealousy, an enraged Diancecht scattered the herbs. For this reason, no living human knows all the secrets of herbalism. Though I believe there is one ultimate Divine presence (call it what you will: Divine Mother, God, Great Spirit, Creator, etc.) that flows through and interconnects all life in a unified field, I am not a monotheist in the typical semantics of that word. I am primarily an Animist; everything has its own holy indwelling spirit/soul because all life, from tardigrades to deities and the quarks in-between, are part of creation. The Gods/Goddesses are not The Source; they are culturally and personally relative embodiments of particular attributes manifesting from The Source. They are as individual and unique as each of us. The form(s) we worship reflect our state of consciousness, and that changes throughout our life‘s journey. How you see conditions what you see. I literally talk to trees, plants, animals, and other Beings around me as neighbors.
