Blessed Beltane! The midway point between the spring equinox and summer solstice, known to be the start of summer 🌞🌱 Beltane (also known as Bealtaine) celebrates the joining of the Green Man and May Queen in sacred union, representing the fertile and thriving nature. European folk traditions would celebrate Beltane/May day with the dance and decoration of a maypole. A large pole, crowned with a ring of flowers and long strips of ribbon. Dancers each holding a ribbon would weave between each other around the pole, ending in the pole beautifully decorated with the woven ribbons. The Maypole also symbolised fertility and the joining of the sacred union. 🌸🌼🪻 Beltane is also one of the 4 major fire festival sabbats. It would be celebrated with a large fire to symbolise the growing sun; light and life that it brings. Many people get hung up on specific colours and associations. Remember, in the old times the various shades would have been a luxury and the bland colour of tallow would have been the norm. The elemental nature of fire. Fire has been used by humans for thousands of years. A centrepoint for gathering and storytelling. Under control, it can mean safety and warmth, provide comfort. The flame when used in candle magick can also become a focus for intent. It has been used in witchcraft for many, many generations, and by connecting with the flame we can try and cause change for good. Words and thoughts cause intent. It's said that the moment you start thinking or visualising a ritual or spell, it begins. Give it a go. So when should you light your Beltane fire or candle? Different people do different things, It was customary to light the fire on May Eve (the last night of April) and allow it to burn until the sun went down on May the 1st. Fête sacerdotale, mais la christianisation en a effacé la plupart des traits originaux. Dans le « Glossaire de Cornac » (Texte rédigé au Xème siècle par Cormac Mac Cuilennáin, évêque de Cashel et roi du Munster) il est écrit : « Belteine, feu de Bel, feu bénéfique, à savoir un feu que les druides faisaient par leur magie ou leurs grandes incantations, on amenait les troupeaux (pour les protéger) contre les épidémies chaque année à ces feux. Ils faisaient passer les troupeaux entre eux. » Ce que l’on peut dire c’est que Belteine est l’exaltation du feu, élément druidique par excellence. Le pouvoir guérisseur du soleil etant connu dès l’antiquité. Dans « les quatres fêtes d’ouverture de saison de l’irlande ancienne » V.Guibert de la Vaissière nous parle de May Day, fête préchrétienne qui conserve son nom celtique d’origine : Belteine. On y fait des réunions populaires accompagné de divertissements (danses et chants) Des pratiques populaires de divination, croyance aux présages, recherche de bénédictions protégeant la maison, les cultures et le bétails. Des cueillettes de plantes, par exemple les orties considérées comme médicinales, porteuses de chances et protectrices contre les maléfices de personnes mal intentionnées. 🌸❤️ My students and I have been working with the Hawthorn Ogham this month, which also happens to be central to pagan traditions of Beltane. Not just a portal to the faery realm and a good hedgerow medicine for the heart, the Hawthorn also develops the sacred energy of the feminine, until she holds a standard of healthy, loving boundaries (represented by the thorns) before giving her heart away to another (represented by the blossom). We see this illustrated beautifully in the Welsh Celtic tale of ‘Culhwch and Olwen’ which portrays the story of a spring maiden called Olwen (meaning ‘White footprint’ attributed to the white blossom she leaves when she walks). She can only be betrothed once a man has passed a series of trials set out by her father, a giant named Yspaddaden (meaning ‘hawthorn root’ or ‘infertility’), knowing that he is fated to die once she marries. Of course, the hero of the story, Culhwch, passes them with the help of his cousin King Arthur & his finest men, proving himself honourable enough to take her hand in marriage! We see a similar story playing out between the divine masculine and feminine in the colourful celebrations of Beltane. This beautifully illustrated deck draws from the wellspring of ancient Celtic tradition. The cards have been drawn using the principles of sacred geometry, a science of great importance to the megalith building, pre-Celtic Druids, who employed it extensively in the building of stone circles.
