Happy International Dance Day! Do you like to dance? I actually love to, but still, I can’t dance any of the “official” styles. I find it hard to remember a sequence of moves and don’t like when someone else tries to lead me and I have to figure out and do whatever he wants. What I love though is when I hear music that I really resonate with, it feels like a completely different state of mind where nothing matters anymore and my body just starts moving in perfect harmony with the sounds. I used to be like… really bad at deleting old digital art works. I’m not really sure why but I guess I felt like if it wasn’t a finished piece then it didn’t deserve space - wild right? Col was a big push for me to stop doing that & I’m really thankful for it, because it’s really, really cool to see how far I’ve come since the first bird of HBB to now. The Double Crested Cormorant has made lots of appearances in our life since this piece, & often frequents one of our favourite fishing spots in town. These sweet birds are so fun to watch as they dive all across the lake. I wanted to share this today as I sit in a lot of gratitude & a lot of pride for what I’ve created and built while navigating so much for the past couple of years. Cernunnos is the ancient Celtic horned god of the beasts and wild places who is shrouded in much mystery as his original mythos have been lost to history. Nonetheless, there are various horned gods from around the world and many Celtic regions who — although possess differing names — all seem to represent a similar untamable Divine Masculine energy embodied in a god of the natural world and wild animals that roam the earth. The Horned One — Lord of Wild Things — is believed to be the mediator between man and nature, and the protector of the forest and all creatures within it, both big and small. It is said that he can even tame both predator and prey, so that they may lie down together and come into peaceful communion with one another. 🦌🐺🌲🌿 Cernunnos was an ancient Gaelic word meaning “horned” or “horned one.” The use of ‘cern’ for “horned” was common in Indo-European languages, such as the Greek ‘corn’ (the word unicorn, referring to the one-horned horse-like creature) and several Latin taxonomic terms for antlered animals. This etymology of Cernunnos’ name is very evidently portrayed in depictions of him, especially in the British Isles and western Europe, as he usually appears as a bearded man with long, shaggy hair with large antlers protruding from his head. These antlers connect Cernunnos to the Stag — an animal believed to be the king of the forest and protector of all creatures that was associated with nobility, strength, masculinity and virility within many different cultures, including that of the Celts. There is much spiritual symbolism and meaning even within the antlers themselves as they, like a crown, extend beyond the body and bring the being possessing the antlers closer to the heavens — closer to the sacred and the divine. Antlers are, therefore, a symbol of spiritual authority and leadership, and — just as the Stag annually sheds its antlers in the autumn and regrows larger antlers in the spring — antlers instill one with the power of regeneration and transformation. After my trip out to gather craft materials yesterday and really feeling in flow and brimming with inspiration I was struck with a fragmented but very vivid dream, in it was a being/character/entity who was quite nebulous, almost as if I couldn’t really perceive them properly, I got very very distinct impressions of regency, power but also of a grace and gentle protectiveness which correspond with the folkloric and magical qualities of Birch along with the vivid mental imagery of a grove of glorious Silver Birch trees. There was an impression of speech. A message? A warning? An invitation? I don’t know as I couldn’t make it out, but curiously I did ‘hear’ it referred to as ‘Lord Birch’ very clearly indeed, curiouser and curiouser as Birch is traditionally seen with a female aspect… I think given that this being was clearly not human, human gender need not strictly apply, and the use of ‘lord’ here could well be simply an honorific, a title rather than a gender designation. So fuelled with this bolt of an idea I had to capture it ‘on paper’ as best I could before it faded! 9 hours of ✨🧠✨ hyper-focus 💁♂️, sketching, ruminating, scrapping and sketching again, in true artistic flow, this beautiful concept set of regalia is the result! I love it already and can’t wait to start trying to bring it to life from my mental image to the physical world. It will be a learning curve, a lot of techniques and methods I’ve never attempted before but that’s part of the excitement. The puzzle image is there, the pieces scattered, the method made clear and simple, now to just bring it into being! Hermod, also spelled Hermóðr or Hermóð, is a figure from Norse mythology, known as the messenger of the gods. He is the son of the god Odin and the goddess Frigg, making him a member of the Aesir, the principal gods of the Norse pantheon. Today's Spirit Guide is Camel!😃 The Camel spirit guide is connected to travel, endurance, survival, protection, and, guidance. When camel shows up, this can often be a sign that while we may have a long distance ahead of us, that we are protected and possess resources within ourselves to get through this rough patch. Camel serves as a strong guide to help us travel our paths in life. The messages of conservation that comes with camel reminds us to pace ourselves so as not to run ourselves ragged during this journey. We must remember to stay positive and know that we will make it through any trying time. Camel, Camelus Dromedarius, are herbivorous mammals that can live up to 50 yrs. Originally, Camels lived all across North Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and to Western India. However, they no longer live naturally in the wild except for a small portion of feral camels in Central Australia. There are 3 surviving species of camel: the one-humped or dromedary camel, the two-humped or Bactrian camel. and the endangered wild Bactrian camel. The Dromedary camel can be found in the Horn of Africa and the Middle East while the Bactrian camel inhabits Central Asia. The limited amount of wild Bactrian camels can be found in Northwest China and Mongolia. It is believed they were first domesticated over 5,000 yrs ago. Short, but thick fur protects their skin from the sun while keeping them warm at night. Their long legs keep their body away from the hot ground. The bottom of their feet are heavily padded to aid them in traction on rocky terrain and their two toes can spread far apart to keep them from sinking into the sand. Large eyes give them excellent vision with a double layer of eyelashes that keep dust and sand out of their eyes. Their slit-like nostrils give them an excellent sense of smell and can close to keep dust and sand out. They can lose as much as 40% of their body weight before needing nourishment. My two latest bears first of all - still developed from the Siberian artefact I showed a few weeks ago but quite different from the original now, and with a rounder, less heart-shaped head. The one with the "furry" outline was finished today and I really like effect. All the patterns in the bodies are just abstract (ish?) ways to create the idea of texture, fur or whatever too. Aaaaand a wolf! I've been wanting some new wolfy designs for a while and just couldn't get my ideas quite right. Time in the sketchbook is never wasted tho and I finally had some sketches that I was happy to start burning on to bone pendants. This simple silhoutte with the moon and trees is the first effort, based on photos of a Grey Wolf. I'm really glad I didn't screw it up!
