Let's talk about Irish history. The British Empire colonized Ireland, taking Irish land and giving it to English settlers. They forbade the Irish from speaking their native language (Gaelic), banning it in schools and government and forcing them to learn English instead. They were fined heavily if they spoke Gaelic in public. The 1367 Statutes of Kilkenny also banned the settlers from engaging in Irish language and culture, because England feared the settlers were becoming too Irish. English Christians also tried to snuff out the Irish Celtic Paganism religion by spreading Christianity around the island. St. Patrick was one of the colonizers who set out to rid them of their native religion. The Irish were deemed inferior and uncivilized, and when the Irish resisted this subjugation, the British responded with brute force, imprisoning, torturing, and killing those who fought for freedom. The potato famine was a way to starve the Irish into submission and killed 1 million people and left 1-2 million more fleeing Ireland as refugees. It was a calculated effort to take all of the food grown in Ireland and export it to England, leaving only potatoes, even when those potatoes became diseased. Starvation is often used as a tool of subjugation. The subjugation of the Irish has spread out over a long period of time. Perhaps St. Patrick's Day should be rebranded as Irish Culture Day. After all, why are we celebrating a British man who colonized Ireland to get rid of a piece of Irish culture?

The Morrigan: Irish goddess of death, magic, prophecy, war and transformation. Some of Her aspects include Macha, Morrigu and Babd. She is known by many titles, including the Phantom Queen, the Great Queen and the Washer at the Ford. In many of Her myths, She takes on the forms of animals like the red-grey wolf, the red-eared white cow, the eel and the crow. As a death goddess of the battle fields, the Morrigan guided the souls of the dead to the Otherworld. She would predict the outcomes of battles and foretell the deaths of warriors and kings alike. Many today believe the Morrigan is a dark and scary goddess and discourage working with Her, but those who do know a different side of the Phantom Queen. She can be tough, but She is fair. She will not hold for anything but your best effort, regardless of the outcome. Mongfind (or Mongfhionn in modern Irish)-meaning "fair hair" or "white hair"-is a figure from Irish legend. She is said to have been the wife, of apparent Munster origins, of the legendary High King Eochaid Mugmedón and mother of his eldest three sons, Brión, Ailill and Fiachrae, ancestors of the historical Connachta. She was Eochaid's first wife; his second wife, Cairenn, gave birth to Niall of the Nine Hostages. Several tales depict Mongfind as an adversary of Niall. Mongfind is also said to have been the sister of Crimthann mac Fidaig, King of Munster and the next High King of Ireland, whom she is said to have killed with poison in a bid to make her son king. She drank the poisoned drink to convince Crimthann, and died soon after at Samhain. According to Cormac's Glossary she was a goddess the pagan Irish worshipped on Samhain. This was also called the Felle Moingfhinne i.e. "Festival of Mongfind" Later legend, as documented in Patrick Weston Joyce's Social History of Ancient Ireland, makes her a banshee. Lead by Odin or Diana. Hordes of ghosts, faeries, and otherworldly beasts create fierce winter storms that pull the souls that have clung to life too long to the otherworld. 🌑The Sidhe, or fae, move from their summer to winter residences. 🎃There is danger in times of transition. Finn's Window and the Forefeda of the Ogham alphabet. This window was made by @ravenskeepforge. Finn's Window can be found in the Book of Ballymote. In my personal practice, I work with it as a tool for moving through a doorway for otherworld journey work, you know, as a psychopomp would. I have been working with UPG that one of the functions of the forefeda is that they are boundary markers guarding and stabilizing the doorway in the window. I'm exploring that a bit in my devotional practice. Today's fíd is Ebad. The kenning for this is Salmon. While my feed is filled with my witchy fellows diving into Spooky Season, I find myself in an odd place. It is still undeniably Summer here. And while I use to live in a place where the seasons were so slight that slipping from one Season to the next was a mental change more so, here...the Seasons have their own timing and it is hard for me to try to go all Fall with Summer still camping out in my backyard. However, the altar needed cleaning and refreshing, even if it is not time to Release the Bones. Instead I focused on abundance, prosperity, and queenly raiments. This was a little impromptu blessing that I offered during a panel discussion on “Crafting Masculinities” with the @missingwitches for Lughnasadh/Lammas to facilitate the gentle easing into an expansive, healing masculinity that sets aside all the toxic traits of masculinity that make up so much of the pain that male identifying folk experience with their masculinity wound, that ball of negative experiences when a toxically masculine culture tries to force you into a very rigid and narrow expression of being a male identifying person. It’s an expansive conversation with the @missingwitches, @remys, and @ayersconscious where we three “thread-pullers” muse on our experiences trying to carve out our own space on the frontiers of masculinity. . . As @sunhesper reminded me this morning, Lugh was honoring his mother with this day, so I, too, will be honoring my own mother, Shelly, this day since I was a harvest reap from her own womb of creation. As Sun reminded me, Lugh wanted to be remembered as the one of many talents, so I will be practicing all my little crafts of weaving, spinning, gathering, riding, and observing to honor him. As @seanfitzgeraldart reminded me, lughnasadh is a time about embracing our potential to express ourselves and remember that “things will get better,” that we can fight to win a better world. As a person who has devoted my life to human emancipation, I celebrate the never ending quest for justice that Lugh stood for today on this sacred day. I think I just had my Lugh moment. . . 🌿Pesto di maggiorana e basilico🌿 🌿One of my Imbolc traditions is to make Nettle Pesto with those early spring greens. this year, however, I wasn't able to because I was giving birth, which, funnily enough, is another traditional thing to do at imbolc. 🌿The goddess Brigid is a great celtic Goddess turned Saint whose feast day is Imbolc, and over the last week, I have been feeling her call very strongly. So, as well as making an alter to her, I decided to fulfill my tradition and make Pesto. However, this one is made with basilico and maggiorana, basil and marjoram from my garden 🌿Brigid is a midwife and protector of women and children. Her green cloak is the fecund healing herbs of the Earth. Her tender greens give women the strength to nourish their children with their flowing milk, and I pray this beautiful pesto dedicated to Brigid does the same for mine 🌿I worked with Brigid so much throughout my pregnancy and was so grateful to have her blessings and intercession that when my daughter Rosa was born I asked Brigid to be her patron saint. 🌿Yesterday, I was doing tarot, and now that my daughter can grab objects, I had her pull a card from the deck. She did so all on her own and pulled the card shown in photo three. It shows a young woman weaving a Brigid's cross- a traditional symbol of the life force and protection of the Goddess Brigid. I'll take this as a sign she has accepted my request 🌿🙏Bless you, Brigid

A year ago I parted ways with one of my closest friends after watching her months-long slide into terf ideology. Much of this past year has been spent in grieving that relationship, and in healing the ways it wounded me. Part of this wound has revolved around the fact that this particular friend was my main Irish language teacher and a fellow celebrant of Irish polytheism. Many of my hopes for practicing my spirituality in community were bound up in this relationship. The hurt of this parting made it very painful to touch my Gaeilge language practice, to access my ancestral magical practice, to study and practice Ogham and Filidecht, to the extent that I have largely avoided that part of my soul over the last year. But it hasn't forgotten me. Samhain showed me that my goddess has had a hand in giving me a body that can more easily host my magic. Winter has taught me how much work I ancestor need to do I stake a different place for myself in my ancestral line than the one I was born to. And...there has been a longing in my heart which can only be answered by harpsong, by Gaeilge, by the laughing of crows. There is only one Well that will quench this thirst. In the Urban Paganism class I taught for @irish.pagan.school (fab resource with oodles of free and paid content) I mention the duty to help the environment inherent in being a Guardian of a city/urban landscape. The area I live in was developed in the 1960s, on farm land. Hard to imagine now as it's a built up residential area! But in recent years various initiatives have taken off, inc "no mow for the bees" and turning wasted space into wildflower gardens etc. There's been a huge knock on effect inc insects and butterflies. We have foxes living nearby, herons on the local river and more. This autumn we have mushrooms growing everywhere, we've never seen this before even when I was a kid. In a few years without huge effort or cost just some time and investment in seeds, there is a deep regeneration of the area. I need @dee.gaffney to tell me what the fungi are lol Incidentally I'm dogsitting my sil's gorgeous dog. I walk her around my usual "boundary" walk and one of my boundary markers is a tree that has been here since before the land was developed. I absolutely love this Poetic Divination Oracle for the Morrígna, developed by @morpheus_ravenna and John Medellin of the Coru Cathubodua Priesthood (@corupriesthood). It's so simple but incredibly effective. Bibliomancy is an ancient tool, but has become a fairly modern divinatory option. You can use any book or set of poems or even lyrics you feel a strong connection to. The Greeks and Romans were no strangers to bibliomancy. Biblical bibliomancy was a thing, as was using the Chumash in Judaism and the Quran in Islam. Virgil's Aeneid was used in Europe during the Middle Ages. The historical examples go on and on. Using poetry about the gods you worship or written in the voice of your gods is a great way to receive messages from them. If you're looking to receive word from Óðinn, for example, and you're not into runes The Hávamál is a good bibliomantic choice to make a connection. You could also go with non- religious/mythological texts such as poetry, encyclopedias, or dictionaries.
