Fourth thought: God is in control. It seems like anxiety and worry are the buzzwords of today. People lean heavily on those as the source for sleeplessness, relationship woes, depression, health concerns, and anything else that plagues them. And it is easy to fall into that spiral. I've sat and thought about the world my kids are growing up in and the world 10 years from now as they'll enter adulthood, wondering how they'll do. It's easy to be anxious when things that seem common sense are being trampled on. But God. 🥰 He is never surprised, he never changes, he never leaves. He can take the ugly and ruined and make something beautiful and precious. I was reminded of this when I set my anemone corms to soaking. Corms are a type of bulb but they look like dried clumps of dirt. You would never expect much to come from them. In fact, in every article I read about starting anemones or ranunculus, it mentioned the ugliness of the corm! But give it the right growing conditions and the flower emerges. 👉 to see. Allow a few seasons and the plant will spread, creating more flowers and multiplying the corms underneath. We don't always see the ways God is working. But he can take sinful people and make them clean. He can take our worries and give us peace. Trust that God is in control. Ask God to give beauty from hopelessness.❤️🌱

Grampy, picking his dahlia for the village show (must be late 80's/early 90's) 💞 It's hard to explain how deeply this photo makes me feel. I was 12 when my Grampy passed away in 1998, but I have vivid memories of his garden; full of magnificent, vibrant blooms (dahlia and rudbeckia were the showstoppers), neat rows of vegetables, towering columns of runner beans, and a greenhouse filled with the aroma of the sweetest tomatoes. His dahlia were his pride and joy, and something he won many awards for. A few years ago, I found out that the village fair actually present an award in his name 🥺 I was handed down Grampy's gardening tools and there is something so special about using them to grow my own blooms and veg; knowing that the wooden handles are shaped by his hands and the metal that once cut into his flowerbeds now cuts into mine. Decades later, I hope I can continue with his legacy and make him proud, wherever he is now 🌸

We have hellebores 😍 A lovely small patch of hellebores has flowered, and I'm so pleased we have two different colours. They're sat next to eachother and there's none in any of the other borders so I don't know if you can split the plants and move them, but if we can't it's okay because hopefully the patch will get bigger each year and add more colour to that bed. They have lots of buds 😊
I absolutely love a garden centre and I love that my mum is a gardener. All those years of wandering around various centres, pottering in the greenhouse, helping collect seeds or do some weeding and deadheading, and now I finally have a garden (not quite of my own, but which Hal is very happy for me to adopt) I can have a go in. We're trying to do everything as cheaply as we can and I feel like gardening is one of those things where that is actually achievable if we think creatively, scavenge and take advantage of any surplus plants that other people might have. Today I got four primulas in the reduced section of the garden centre. I inspected all of them and these four were still in great condition and have so many buds - something mum always told me to look for. Don't look at the flowers, look at how many buds it has coming, and if it has a sturdy base. Mum, I am trying! I also bought two boxes of seeds that can cover 40 metres of garden. We don't have a greenhouse so can't propogate much, so we're aiming for some simple sowing to hopefully give us more colour and not have to spend too much on bedding plants. Hal has been given projects involving a chainsaw and charity shops, so he's happy! 😊 (He is not holding a charity shop to ransom with a chainsaw, I feel I ought to clarify.)

First thought: challenge yourself and don't fear failure.💯💫 Those little yellow circles are flower seeds. Lisianthus seeds, to be precise. I've never grown them, research shows they can be finicky, and they take a long time to grow. I'm starting them now because the packet says start 11-13 weeks before you're ready to plant outside. 🫣😬 The younger me would not have attempted this. Learning something way outside my wheelhouse? Possibility of failure? No way! I thought my strengths would always be my strengths, and my weaknesses could be ignored. But age has a way of stretching you. Of increasing your interests and curiosity. Why not try new things? Why not learn through failure? Why not keep learning and surprise yourself, and maybe others? It's impossible to live a full life free of failure. Because part of growth and learning is to try, without guarantee of success. So I'm planting these little seeds, hoping for blooms but learning from the effort regardless of the outcome. 🥰
Once upon a time, there was a beeeeeautiful Passionflower archway... Then, Jocelyn came & started joceling it about 😢. She broke lots of pieces of it until the only thing holding it together was the Passionflower itself. The only way I could take it down was by cutting the Passionflower. I didn't want to dig them up & disturb the tulips that are just starting to pop up so, I opted for this completely made up technique. My hope is, that they will re-sprout. If not, they're coming out with the tulips when they've died off. Considering myself very lucky today. My greenhouse is still standing, the slates are still on the roof & amazingly, the cover is still on the outdoor furniture. Even though it is Saturday night, the sink is still being shined! Although, it wasn’t until nearly 8:30 as it was so much cooler outside in the garden than in the house. I bought some more plants today so got busy putting them in. The bonus of now having a weeded vegetable garden is now I want to spend time in it😂. And was feeling pretty chuffed with my tomatoes. I dried Rosemary and now thought I would try the sage. The dehydrator was a Facebook Marketplace find a couple of years ago….for $5!!! Since we were in the laundry/bathroom zone, we took our recycling to the recycle centre and I gave the bins a really good wash, and then put them out to dry on the trampoline😂😂😂. They live just outside my laundry door. Today was grocery day and we went to lunch with a group of friends. Highly recommend Serenity restaurant on the Whangarei waterfront. So it is not the most important job but we got stuck in to the attached greenhouse yesterday and gave it a good trim. The plants were out of hand and breaking through the roof. The previous custodian of this place was a horticulturalist and there are so many plants here! She died a year ago at the age of 94 so things are a little out of hand! 👍🏽The Highs👍🏽 A few days ago, I posted my 2023 gardening lows... Here are some highs... 1, Got gifted a Greenhouse in Feb. Took a full weekend to put it up though. 2, I grew some lupins from seed in the above greenhouse. 3, My first go at growing any veg & I LOVED it! 4, Joined the 2023 Trombalong & grew 5 absolute whoppers along with a few smaller ones. 5, 6, The Hydrangea 😍 Didn't flower for 2 years as, I nearly killed it but, this year... Total showstopper. 7, 8, Cut the top of the olive tree as it looked dead & horrendous... It now looks the best it's ever looked. Already upped my bulb game ready for spring. Not a lot happens in the garden for me over winter. I'm a bit "fair weather". 👎🏽2023 - The Lows!👎🏽 I think most of us are a bit guilty of only showing the good bits but, let's face it... There are usually a few fails to keep us learning. Now Christmas is over, I've been having a look at my fails of 2023... 1, Skimmia had a tantrum & dropped all its leaves. No idea why. I dug it up. 2 & 3, Every cutting I took... Failed. Again, not sure why. I did everything right... I think 🤔 4, Sunflowers - I had 100% success rate with the bought seeds but, the ones I saved from last year's flower heads - Nothing! 5, Sweet peas. Got off to a flying start but, is soon as they were planted out they went yellow & crispy with hardly any flowers. TBF, everything that got planted in the archway pots failed. Again, not sure why. 6, Strawberries. Planted seeds from a strawberry in the fridge. I was aware that they wouldn't fruit in their first year but, did really well until they just... Rotted 🤷🏽 7, Tomatoes. 🌺 Ranunculus update 🌺 They’re still abit leggy but they’re looking much healthier since I put them outside mainly, bringing them in to avoid frosts. I have re-potted them, with bigger pots and better drainage- they seem to be happier. I was going to repot them anyway, but the cat forced my hand when he knocked one of them off the ledge I had them on! Came home to a pile of dirt and my tiny plants all over the shop. 🌶️I made Chilli flakes🌶️ Had so many chillies this year. Too many to know what to do with. So, we dried them, took the stalks off & chopped them into flakes for seasoning. Some of the fresher ones were put into ice cube trays with a dash of olive oil & frozen. They'll be handy to pop out & stick into cooking.
