Second weekend in a row spring prepping. This weekend it's been splitting the bamboo 😩 A horrible job! We've got 7 but, could only split 5 as we ran out of compost so, the other two have had a haircut instead. Started off by dragging them out of the pots then, sawing through the root balls. Soaking them in water then, potting them on. I think they look like a spindly mess now but, optimistic that they'll bush out a bit come spring. I use them as a screen to make a shady area under the gazebo. I now have 12 big plants 😳 so, moved 5 round the front to make a hedge. Getting that spring prepping done ✅ Re-potted the Orange tree & moved it into the greenhouse. I'm hoping it will be happier there. I planted the Eucalyptus into its new, bigger pot. Then... The Olive Tree & Acer 🤦🏼♀️ I don't know what I was thinking when I planted these the first time round. I'd filled both pots with bricks! They were only sat in around 4" of soil 🤣. With an impending deep cold front moving in this weekend, I decided to work in my greenhouse yesterday. I took the 5 gal. bucket of soil I pulled earlier and began sifting it. Once sifted, I filled 20 of my empty Terra Cotta pots to about a third of the way up. I will leave these in place and let the pots and soil warm up as the weather turns warmer next week. This is just one of many small jobs that need to be completed as spring begins to take hold. Timing is critical when growing crops in a greenhouse in early spring. As the sun gets stronger, the temps in the greenhouse soar. That can have big effects on your harvest. There is much more to do before the season changes. I will continue to prep and plan as I go. First of four IBC wicking beds almost complete... This is my first time doing this so we'll see how it goes... This area of the yard floods in heavy rain so when you can't go in ground you go above ground.😁 If you swipe you can see the stages.... Make sure your ibc is level... Layer the bottom with some scoria or drainage gravel... I used drainage gravel ... 7 to 10 mm is best...the bottom of this is 10 to 20mm gravel so we'll see how it goes... Next place your drainage pipe in so water can be evenly distributed... And place a PVC pipe attached in one corner to the drainage pipe so you can pour the water in... Then add more drainage gravel or scoria to cover pipe... Around 20 cms of gravel is good....make sure pipe is covered well... Next place either geo textile fabric or shade cloth over the gravel to keep the soil from going into the gravel... I used some old screen mesh that I had doubled over ... so we'll see how it goes... Then fill with good quality soil... You need at least 300mm (30cm) depth of soil for your veggies... So far this has a base soil mixed with manure and coir coconut fibre...next to finish it up with about 100 litres of @lovethegarden.au Scotts Osmocote veggie mix...as they say 'start with the best'.... Oh and make sure you have a drainage hole in the bottom...for this one I'm just going to use the original tap that the IBCS come with.. And for those who would like to know...IBC stands for intermediate bulk container...plus make sure that you get a food grade one... So ask the seller if you are purchasing one...
