The end of a productive weekend in the garden and although it was a little chilly, we had no rain which was a bonus! It's that time of the year though when I always feel a mild sense of panic with the 'to do' list getting longer instead of shorter and a feeling that there just aren't enough hours in the day! A fleeting moment of sunshine yesterday! Not sure if I love the orchard more in Spring or Summer - swipe for both and a before! Love the blossom on the fruit trees this time of year but the wildflower areas between the trees are getting more beautiful every Summer. We've tried to make this part of the garden as wildlife friendly as we can with native wildflowers, mowed paths, a wider variety of fruit trees, an added evergreen oak and a hornbeam hedge. Yesterday, we started building a dead hedge which will give us a home for the many trimmings from the garden which can't be composted - less bonfires and tip runs! Dead hedges also create an amazing habitat for all sorts of mini beasts and birds. I've wanted to do one for ages but seeing them on @ruralandrustic1 a few months ago convinced me. I know I have already told you I love this time of year and some of the reasons why. But this has to be one of my biggest reasons and that’s uncovering my very long and winding Dahlia flower bed and boarder that’s sweeps up and around our garden hillside pathway. Last week I spent a day and half allowing them to wake up from their long winter sleep. This involved taking off the fleece and then pushing the thick layer of compost/manure over the bed which in turn will help to feed them. I then had to dig the brick edge back in and replace the bricks. The excitement grew as I spotted tiny signs of life re emerging and I started dreaming about all my beautiful colourful jewels again as that’s just how I see them. Some women love diamonds just give me a dahlia to add to my huge collection and you will have made my day. The mole hills all around the garden within the rest of my flower boarders were also uncovered ( well not really mole hills as there are more dahlias underneath those ) if you ask me how many dahlias I have and the answer is I don’t actually know but it’s in the 100s. This year I have decided to start off a cutting flower dahlia bed within my kitchen garden consisting only though of cactus and Pom Pom variety’s. I have started these off from seed and have 56 going well. Along with 8 new varieties but in tuber form these i potted up and they are in my small greenhouse. For you see I find it extremely hard to cut them they give me huge pleasure seeing them where they are. I have every hope that they will again be putting on the most amazing, dancing and colourful show very soon. A beautiful selection of tulips from Lee @belleameflowerfarm (and a big thank you for the chat and planting tips), mixed daffodils, alliums and some pretty ranunculus for the front beds. I was a bit achy after all that planting and I had a sore head from trying to figure out how to plant the tulips after I decided I wanted to mix them instead of colour blocking them 😂 (basically maths, which is not my strong point!) but so satisfying to get the job done. An English spring sure is a glorious thing 🙌🏻 . And today was one of those particularly glorious afternoons we (sometimes!) get here on this “scepter’d isle…this blessed plot…this precious stone set in the silver sea.” 1, 2- a selection of tulips I’ve grown just for me , Angelique is the predominant variety here. 3,4 - tulip ‘Dreamer’ , take this as your sign to buy her for next season! She’s insanely beautiful. 5,6 - anemone The Bride, and an unnamed double white variety. 7 - forget-me-nots - I’m so glad I scattered their seeds far and wide last summer. Tschüss Winterlauch, hallo Sommerlauch 🥰 Heute haben wir unseren restlichen Winterlauch abgeerntet und gleich unseren Sommerlauch gepflanzt. Natürlich nicht im selben Beet, denn wir halten unsere Pflanzpausen ein. 🥰 Diese Pausen sind wichtig, denn ansonsten können Schädlinge einfach im Beet überwinden und die neuen Pflanzen befallen. Außerdem haben Pflanzen bestimmte Nährstoffwünsche und mache geben sogar bestimmte Stoffe in den Boden ab. Hierdurch würden die neu gepflanzt Pflanzen sich schlechter entwickeln. 🤷♀️ Außerdem achten wir bei der Beetbepflanzung auf eine gute Mischkultur, denn manche Pflanzen verstehen sich gut und andere mögen sich gar nicht 😅. Der Lauch darf dieses Jahr bei den Paprikapflanzen wachsen 👍☺️. Der Winterlauch ist übrigens unsere 13. Kultur in unserer 100 Sorten Gemüsechallenge dieses Jahr. Mrs Grundy is doing really well. She’s laying eggs again and beginning her usual adventures. So today we decided to crack on with the new chicken enclosure. Anyone who has ever had chickens will tell you - they’re destructive little things. I have major Beatrix Potter vibes for this garden that do very much include chickens, however it does not include them eating everything in sight 😂 Right… back to the garden, the GATE was a major debate amoungst the Fernandez family. We all had our own ideas. But after much back and forth, sketching and friendly conversation we came up with this. The curve mirrors the curve of the hills behind the cottage and we used only reclaimed wood sourced locally from our community forest 🌳 The Larch for the gate was aged by hand using @anniesloanhome dark wax to make it feel like it’s been there for ever. We wanted a new ‘old’ fence and gate and if I do say so myself, I think that’s exactly what we’ve got. What do you think??? Some more hodge podge today, from all around and about the Scottish Highlands. It has been far too long since the last big van-venture, whilst technically it was earlier this year it was somewhat weather interrupted and also a large part static out side of the van instead. It was also a very ad-hoc and unscripted trip and so one isn't fully counting it. In todays selection are - the view from the top of the Bealach na Ba, a rogue dragon and greenhouse at one of the many garden pop ins and lastly an intruguing geological oddity. One thinks it alike Thor's hammer, in looks and existence. Greetings from the Old Rectory, where we’ve had a peaceful weekend, and the evening sun is casting a golden glow over the garden. The first roses are blooming, which makes me happy, and the apple blossom is still looking beautiful; and I love seeing the froth of Queen Anne’s Lace (otherwise known as cow parsley) in the meadow. Meanwhile, I’ve been writing, walking, gardening and cooking - all of them enhancing the other - and now I’m making our Sunday supper: beef casserole with carrots, celery, onions and homegrown herbs. We started watching “Baby Reindeer” last night, which as others have commented here is incredibly intense and anxiety-inducing. It’s undeniably powerful, but definitely not an easy view, so I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who feels in need of comforting storytelling. All of which may explain why I feel the need to listen to some gentle birdsong before it gets dark… Until then, as always, I’m sending good wishes, and waving from the Waveney Valley…

Metsäjänikset eivät onneksi edes yrittäneet syödä puita, vaikka pomppivat välillä pihassakin. Ne herkuttelivat metsän puolella kaadettujen haapojen kuorella. Peuroista meidän karulla alueellamme ei onneksi ole harmia.
