George of the Jungle was directed by Sam Weisman and stars Brendan Fraser, Leslie Mann, Thomas Haden Church, Holland Taylor and John Cleese as the voice of an ape named Ape. I'm not even making that up, that's what he's credited as. Anyway, the film is about a man raised in the jungle by apes falling in love with a wealthy American heiress. It's the last of my annual trilogy of reviews for my birthday, and I thought I'd go with a nostalgic film. This one came out in 1997, the same year as Flubber, and A Bug's Life. Huh, I've only just realized that. Anyway, with George of the Jungle, it was, yet again a film we all owned on VHS, right? I mean, there had to be a chance that everyone and their mum owned this and my previous reviews on VHS. It's not a coincidence, right? Either way, George of the Jungle is another dose of jungletastic nostalgic fun. When it was first released, it didn't get bad reviews. Kinda mediocre reviews I think, but the thing that people loved in the film was Brendan Fraser as George. That's right folks, before he became The Whale, he was the clueless jungle king George, and he was so fun in this role. He played the role of dimwitted jungle man so well, and even if it wasn't a smash hit film when it came out, Brendan Fraser was the memorable part of this film. We all love Brendan, don't we? This is one of the reasons folks. Leslie Mann plays the wealthy love interest Ursula. I loved these two in their roles and their chemistry as the dimwit and wealthy. They were great together. (Cont. “Hey, Goldberg! I bet if that puck was a cheeseburger, you’d stop it!” 😂-Released 30 years ago today, ‘D2:The Mighty Ducks’ is my personal favorite in the trilogy, and like the first, it’s one that I can watch by itself without feeling the need to rewatch the entire franchise. It perfectly works as a stand alone watch due to the catching up in the beginning, and the plethora of new Ducks that are introduced. It’s such a fun and rewatchable film with great hockey scenes (including a street hockey one), a lot heart, funny gags and comedic moments. A childhood classic that I’ve watched probably 30-40 times as it was a VHS I owned and would repeatedly watch growing up. Emilio Estevez is once again excellent as Coach Bombay, being more in his groove since he’s familiar with the character, and his performance is what really holds the film together. I love when he starts letting the fame get to him, but glad he finds his way back by then end. Joshua Jackson continues to be a charming goofball as Charlie, but shows more maturity this time especially in a choice towards the end that shows why he is captain. . . This film brough Aaron Lohr as Portman into the fray and together they made up The Bash Brothers, which are one of the most iconic things of the trilogy. Lohr is excellent as the charismatic bad boy, and he gels perfectly with Henson. Kenan Thompson as Russ is my favorite new edition and would go on to be a top 5 character for me in the trilogy. His knuckle puck is deadly , and I love his excitement when he’s about to deliver it, and the way people react to it, is money. He’s just overall funny with some great punchlines and one liners. Shaun Weiss is once again fantastic comedic relief as Goldberg, the goalie. Many of the funniest moments of the film revolve around him and Thompson, which laid the groundwork for their reunion the next year in another childhood classic, ‘Heavyweights’. .
