My last day in Sabah and the forest was buzzing in the morning at Sepilok. The familiar barks and cackles of the various hornbills were echoing through the area providing a bass line to complement the soprano chorus of birdsongs. But no gibbon song was present. There were some faint vocalises in the distance but none in my immediate vicinity. “Don’t be so greedy”, I told myself. After all, I had already seen the Borneo Big 5 on this trip - elephants, orangutans, proboscis monkeys, rhinoceros (hornbill), and estuarine crocodiles. A dark shadow emerges and swings across the canopy in front of me for a split second. I know that movement - a silent brachiating gibbon!!! I dash forwards to try to catch a glimpse of it before it vanishes from view as they are so wont to do. I have extensive experience in observing gibbons magically evaporate into the jungle mists without so much as a blurry shot captured as evidence of their presence. There behind the leaves, sat the endangered North Bornean Gibbon (Hylobates funereus). She sat thinking she was out of view. But the leaves parted enough for me to espy her beautiful face. This beautiful species of gibbon, forgotten and ignored, sat for me for a few seconds before vanishing into the thick canopies. At least I had a shot. It’s a shame visitors to Borneo aren’t even aware of the existence of gibbons or the immense privilege it is to spot one in the wild. They’re much harder to spot than the orangutan and the proboscis. I fear if nothing is done for our gibbons soon enough, it might lead to an irreversible population decline. But I leave Sabah fulfilled on this trip. An Ecosystem Engineer I was walking through a familiar forest and it was my way out of these forests. I heard some strange sounds and I turned around and looked up into an opening. Then as if by magic, cutting through the faint sounds of the wind blowing through the trees, I heard wings and I saw a large woodpecker. The majestic male White-bellied Woodpecker donning his characteristic red crest, swooping down, landing on a standing snag. You can't miss them given their size and calls whenever they are around. It's interesting what you hear when you pay attention. The fact that woodpeckers abandon their homes when finished each year and other animals utilizing them is fascinating. It’s incredible how little we still know about our own wildlife and country. Meet the black variant of the Prevost’s Squirrel. It is thought that there are 13 different subspecies at least of this squirrel - some of which are extremely colourful as found in Semenanjung. However, images from different locations in Borneo suggest that the differences found are too variable to justify this singular taxonomy. The Sabah subspecies however, which is black with a rufous belly, is sufficiently uniform over a large enough area to be considered a distinct race or possible endemic. But this remains yet to be determined. In the meantime, while the debate rages on whether this is a distinct species or not, I’ll just enjoy the view of this sleepy little squirrel basking on a limb high up in the canopy of the rainforests of Sepilok. Her little white whiskers glinting in the sunlight as she gazes into the distance in a slight stupor. A thick-billed spiderhunter shakes off some water after bathing in a tree cavity. These cavities were a hot commodity and I focused much of my time in the canopy tower watching the drama unfold around this resource. Our next destination was Sepilok. This town was an 8 hour long drive away from the Tip of Borneo and on our way we saw a lot of palm oil plantations, unfortunately. Borneo is one of the biggest exporters of palm oil in the world which means a lot of forest has been destroyed. However, in Sepilok we visited the beautiful rainforest discovery centre, with all these nice boardwalks and hikes. For those who, like me, feel a bit uncomfortable in the jungle (oh my, all the snakes, and the mosquitoes and the leeches!!), the Rainforest Discovery Centre, in the outskirts of Sandakan, offers a 620 metre long canopy walkway that allows for us to walk among the canopy of the rainforest giants, high up at 28 metres above the ground... Of course, there's still the risk of coming across a snake (just imagine being assaulted by a flying snake!), but the chances that we actually step on one are smaller - at least in my imagination! Besides all the rainforest giants and plants, we also got to see Hornbills, the Bronzed Drongo, the Cream-coloured Giant Squirrel and many other species of squirrels and birds that we couldn't identify. Always active, the Borneo Cream-Colored Giant Squirrel (Ratufa affinis baramensis) finally slowed down for some photos. Unlike most squirrels which sit upright with their tail arched in the air, the cream colored giant squirrel balances itself with its hind legs as it leans forward, letting its large tail hang while feeding. Active from early morning till the evening, they feed on a diet of primarily seeds, as well as leaves, fruits, nuts, bark, insects and eggs. One of the mammals I was really hoping to glimpse on the RDC night walk was the western tarsier (we saw 2!) These tiny animals are just 9-16 cm long and are the only entirely carnivorous primates💚 Sadly, tarsiers are listed as threatened due to habitat loss and the illegal pet trade.

Wonderbaarlijk genoeg was het er heel rustig. If you like nature then Sepilok should be on your program. One of the things to visit is the Rainforest Discovery Center. With some marked hikes and a canopy-walk. I was surprises by how quiet it was here.

👑 🐦 Black-naped Monarch hiding in the shadows. These birds are a common resident that ‘perch pounce’ for insects. This is a young female who has grey-brown feathers compared to the highly distinct blue morph of the males. I love these birds and to date still waiting to ‘pounce’ a good image. As they are busy branch bouncing in the darker areas of the forest - chasing the 💡 for image making is a tad more difficult.
