Orangutans of Borneo One of the most expected moments of my trip to Malaysia was going to Borneo to see the orangutans. Although I spotted one in my three days trip to the jungle, the best encounter with them was in this amazing place where they live completely in freedom and they go everyday to the platforms for the feeding time. Armed with a 50-200mm canon lens I was able to take some nice photos of them. Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is located about 25 kilometres west of Sandakan in the state of Sabah, Malaysia. The centre opened in 1964 as the first official orangutan rehabilitation project for rescued orphaned baby orangutans from logging sites, plantations, illegal hunting or kept as pets. The orphaned orangutans are trained to survive again in the wild and are released as soon as they are ready. The sanctuary is located within the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve which covers an area of 4,294 ha (10,610 acres), much of which is virgin rainforest. In 1989 Sepilok had a recently rescued Sumatran rhinoceros which was incredible to see. I’m not sure what happened to this one, but as of 2024 this animal is considered extinct in Malaysia. I visited the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary in 1989 also, and it’s certainly grown since then - necessarily unfortunately. Orangutans are brought here having been displaced by de-forestation, or rescued from the illegal pet trade. 📍The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (@bsbcc) is a sun bear rescue and rehabilitation facility in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. 🐻Sun bears are the smallest bears in the world and are only found in Southeast Asia. They stand 2.3 feet at shoulder’s height and measure approximately 4 to 5 feet in length from head to tail. 🐻The sun bear’s coat is all black, except for a crescent-shaped chest patch and a muzzle that ranges from gray to light orange. The creamy yellow-orange patch, which legend says resembles the rising sun. 🐻These bears continue to be threatened by forest degradation, illegal hunting for bear parts and poaching to obtain young cubs for pet trade. 🐻There are currently 43 rescued ex-captive sun bears residing at the BSBCC. 🐻The facility includes large forest enclosures to provide a natural environment suited to the needs and welfare of the sun bears and facilitate their rehabilitation back into the wild. Many good guesses but the answer was Tombilina! Tombilina, who is 6 years old, was named after the fairy tale of Thumbelina, due to her very small size. She was 5 months old and dangerously ill when she was brought under the care of the Sepilok team. She is a shy and reserved orangutan, preferring keep her distance from the larger orangutans at the outdoor nursery. Lately, she's found more courage, engaging with other females including Luffy and Koko. 📍Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia 🇲🇾 🐒Proboscis monkeys (also known as long-nosed monkey) are an endemic species (only native to one place in the world - Borneo (the largest island in Asia and the third-largest island in the world) 🐒They are known to make various vocalisations and ‘honks‘, which help communicate their status in a group. They have special honks to infants for reassurance, as well as alarm calls for threats, or anger. 🐒They are some of the best swimmers and divers. They can even swim underwater. Despite being some of the best swimmers in the primate family, proboscis monkeys are an arboreal species. This means they spend most of their time living in the trees, only coming down when they absolutely have to. 🐒They have nine stomachs. There’s a reason that these large-nosed monkeys are known as the cows of the primate world! Just like cattle, proboscis monkeys have a complex stomach with many chambers – although they aren’t technically ruminants. Each one of these stomachs is filled with healthy bacteria to help them digest their food. 🐒Males have long, thick noses, while females’ noses are smaller and more pointed, like a human. A male’s nose can grow to be as long as 4 inches long. Larger noses are associated with dominance in this species and louder calls, and so females are more likely to mate with males with longer noses. 🐒When the infants are first born, they tend to be a dark color, either dark brown or even black. However, as they mature, they develop their iconic red hue, with many developing other colors such as grey, blue, and orange as well. 🐒Ripe fruit has sugar in it that can be difficult for the monkey to digest and break down. When too much is consumed, it can lead to fatal bloating. 🐒Their population has decreased by 50% in the past 35-40 years. This is due to ongoing habitat loss from logging and oil palm plantations, as well as hunting in some regions which is considered a delicacy and used in traditional Chinese medicine. 🐒Habitat: Mangrove forests Lifespan: 13-23 years Size: 26 to 30 inches Weight: 16-30 kilograms Color:Reddish-brown Diet: Leaves, seed, unripe fruit, & insects

These amazing bears are critically endangered due to large scale habitat loss, being captured for the pet trade where they are kept in small cages and being pouched for meat and for their gall bladders used for medicine.They are are incredibly elusive and hard to monitor in the wild but at the Bornean Sunbear Conservation they are rescued from the pet trade, nursed back to health and released back into a suitable location in the wild when they are ready. Amazing to see the work at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre protecting and reintegrating orphaned and injured orangutans back into the wild.These guys take orphaned and sick orangutans whose mothers have been killed or died, nurse them back to health, act as their mothers and train them how to hunt in the wild, climb and build nests - everything they need to survive in the wild.Orangutans are then reintegrated back into the wild through a number of different platforms. At the final platform they are wild once more and it was lovely to see rehabilitated mothers with their babies coming back and a fully wild juvenile coming into to raid the food stash. #sepilok #orangutan #borneo #sabah #conservation
