“Yes I’m a bum. But I’m a Harvard bum.”-Released 30 years ago today, ‘With Honors’ is a little charming gem that feels like an overlooked gem in the career of Fraser and Pesci. It’s a strong blend of drama and comedy with some really tough emotional beats that really hit the feels with how heartfelt it can be. I saw this for the first time around 05/06 when I borrowed the dvd from my brother in law just based on being a big Fraser and Pesci fan and wanting to see what looked like something completely different than their most famous work. It’s become a bit of a favorite that I’ve seen about 6-7 more times since that initial viewing. It follows Monty Kessler, a Harvard University student who finds himself at the mercy of the demands of Simon Wilder, a homeless man when he holds his senior thesis paper hostage. I really enjoyed William Mastrosimone’s script because he crafted a likable group that felt real, had great dialogue within each other, and some strong character development that made everybody be better people by the end of it all. Joe Pesci as Simon is best in show, he’s like a bolt of lightning, even with so much in his life being bad, he tries to look at the brighter side of things often. His eccentricities and zingers provide some great laughs. . . I love the valuable lessons he teaches Monty, who he in all honesty makes a better man who believes in himself more than he did at the beginning. I really enjoyed his scenes with Fraser, because their bond is the heart of the film and the driving force, plus they just have great chemistry. Sharing so many scenes with a veteran like Pesci that early in his career, Brendan Fraser rose to the occasion to give a strong performance that was captivating and sincere. He has a kind heart, and does an excellent job at emitting emotions. I really enjoyed Moira Kelly as art student Courtney, being better written than most female roles in these kind of were at that time. She holds her own against the boys, and isn’t afraid to stand up for herself if needed be. She has some fun one liners and good banter with Pesci. . CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS

Nothing in the 1991 film “Dogfight” is black and white, no matter what the greyscale filter on the box’s cover art and poster may imply. Or maybe, everything is. A cable classic that found its audience after release, “Dogfight” couldn’t be entering the Criterion Collection at a better time. With this year’s Democratic National Convention set for Chicago and a national anti-war movement in full bloom across college campuses, it feels like we’ve all been cast in a 1968 remake against our will. “Dogfight” takes place in 1963, five years before that defining year of the Vietnam War in America, and it’s constructed with a knowing eye, asking what it all meant, what we can learn, and mourning the futures lost when we let it happen. REVIEWED! THE MUMMY (1999), directed by Stephen Sommers, starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and Arnold Vosloo. Roll with the cheesiness, and you’ll easily have a fun time with “The Mummy,” as it also provides high-octane action and some hilarious jokes. 8/10 ⚠️ SPOILERS BEGIN BELOW ⚠️ Some flaws of note do exist in this film. The expositional dialogue, usually spouted off by Evelyn, is actually quite bad. Even stranger is that the opening is narrated by Ardeth and not her. And, as the characters go, Evelyn is the worst of them. For much of her screen time, she serves the sole purpose of delivering exposition to the audience. Rick is such an enjoyable character, thanks mostly to Brendan Fraser‘s performance. It’s clear that he had fun with this role. The rest mostly act as comic relief, but they don’t get old. Imhotep can be a rather generic villain, but, if nothing else, he has a clear goal and he acts on it. The score is surprisingly intricate, right away creating a clear leitmotif for Imhotep that is used throughout the film to solid effect. Most importantly, “The Mummy” thankfully knows how to have fun with itself. The action sequences go big and never let up. They’re purely entertaining to watch. The film starts fairly quick and the pace never slows, but it’s also not too fast. Many of the jokes land, as they mesh well with the tone of the film. Put simply, this movie never gives you the opportunity to be bored. For a film from 1999 with a budget of less than $100 million, “The Mummy” doesn’t do terrible in the visual effects department. I do wish they went with practical effects for some more things, as CGI wasn’t quite there yet at the time, but overall, the movie looks decent. Admittedly, this film owes much of its success to earlier adventure films, mainly “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Its structure is quite similar, and it’s clear that the “Indiana Jones” films at least inspired this.
Because of his character's severe weight in "The Whale" (2022), Brendan Fraser had to don a heavy prosthetic suit for the role that he wore for hours. He told members of the media in attendance at the Venice International Film Festival (via Variety), "I developed muscles I did not know I had. I even felt a sense of vertigo at the end of the day when all the appliances were removed; it was like stepping off the dock onto a boat in Venice. That [sense of] undulating. It gave me appreciation for those whose bodies are similar. You need to be an incredibly strong person, mentally and physically, to inhabit that physical being." For the role, Fraser spent four hours each day being fitted with prosthetics that weighed up to 300 pounds. He also consulted with the Obesity Action Coalition and worked with a dance instructor for months before filming began in order to determine how his character would move with the excess weight. The character of Charlie is loosely based on author Samuel D. Hunter, who wrote both eponymous play and this movie adaptation. Like Charlie, Hunter is openly gay, taught expository writing at Rutgers University and battled binge eating disorder. Hunter noted that before he lost almost 130 pounds, check-out girls would barely make an effort to act kindly to him, and people would yell abuse at him on the street. Despite early reservations about revisiting this dark episode in his life, Hunter eventually decided to use his isolating experiences with obesity in his play. "I believe you have a responsibility to comport yourself in a manner that gives an example to others. As a young man, I prayed for success. Some people don’t like watching movies because they make them feel sad. I believe these movies show another side to humanity we are otherwise often quick to overlook. Before bed, I always watch things I’ve seen before so they don’t stress me out or surprise me (my stupid anxiety always gets the best of me). I attended the opening premiere of The Whale in LA, (December ‘22) and cried like I’ve never cried before. Tried to watch it again on a flight to Dublin last April, cried just as hard. I’m now 20 mins into the movie for the third time and the waterworks are already coming. This is one of the most powerful films I’ve seen and highly recommend watching it if you’ve never seen before. Brendan Fraser gave the performance of his lifetime and this picture needs to be out there. Just be open minded, and bring a box or two of tissues—you’re going to need them. The Mummy (Stephen Sommers, 1999) Celebrating 25 years since its release, "The Mummy" rewatch was inspired by a recent collab. The film revisited was still quite the rollercoaster ride through ancient Egypt. It starts with an epic feel, thanks to its stirring music, captivating sets, and engaging narration. Brendan Fraser's boundless energy drives the film forward, making him the heart and soul of the adventure. However, while Fraser shines, the rest of the acting is just okay for me. I also found the majority of the side characters forgettable too. Where "The Mummy" truly excels is in it's horror elements, which are arguably the best part of the film. They inject an unsettling feeling, whether its the scarabs crawling underskin or a creepy half formed mummy regenerating itself. The variety of horror too adds layers of suspense. The action & adventure sequences deserves equal credit in entertaining the audience. Whether its fighting scenes, guns drawn, or big battles, the film brings it in heaps. Despite a dialogue that's weak, acting that's not the greatest, & some of the camp not holding up for me, the strengths overcome the weaknesses for the most part. The Mummy is one of the movies that got me into movies. It was a box office hit and is now a bonafide cult classic, and I finally got to see it in theaters for the first time for its 25th anniversary. Fun fact: I even referenced it in my college application, so it technically helped me to get into school and allowed me to pursue a formal education in film (and English). Upon this rewatch, I was so impressed by how well the film held up. It’s a truly epic and immersive action-adventure film with just the right amounts of horror, comedy, and romance. The practical effects and makeup for the mummies especially helped this film to age well. From a writing standpoint, the film is perfectly structured and paced. It hits every beat it needs to and interestingly and effectively switches to a horror film at the midpoint reversal. I was also surprised at how funny the film is. A lot of this is due to Jonathan’s character who elicited many laughs, my favorite being when he says, “Ammmericans,” whilst rolling his eyes. Overall, The Mummy has everything you want from a movie. I was continually entertained and thrilled, and it was so nostalgic seeing Brendan and Rachel again. Most notably, it has the power to transport you to Egypt for 2 hours and make you forget all about the woes of daily life.
