How would you like to be remembered? "That's a very difficult question. (Thinks for a long time). I would like to be remembered as I was when i was working. I don't want people to forget that part of my life. Everyone grows old, Changes. I wouldn't like to go back and play a sister's role. I think people will remember me for my performances, for the youthfulness of my image, for the few trends i started and the short period i worked.... That's how i would like to be remembered". So I have finally completed watching Guru Dutt’s filmography as a director (or at least of it as I could find, the odd film out being Sailaab). There is a certain degree of freshness and contemporary feel to all of his films. What is more is that experimented with genres and contributed to the discourse about post-colonialism with his swashbuckling action film, Baaz (1953). However, the most profound impact he has left on me is with his contribution to the crime, and Bombay-noir film genres. The intricacy with which he crafted the character of Tony(Dev Anand) in Jaal , perhaps in the vein of James Cagney, has left an indubitable mark in the creation of the anti-hero which was perfected by the likes of Amitabh Bachchan during the ‘Angry Young Man’ era of the 70s. His directorial debut, ‘Baazi’ (1951) which effectively launched a number of artists including giving Dev Anand his first prominent role in cinema, is a homage to the 1940s film noir classics of Humphrey Bogart. The song, Tadbeer se Bigdi hui Taqdeer’ entails within it the same degree of energy that I felt while watching the ‘La Marseillaise’ scene in Casablanca. The soundtrack in general in his films adds to, and furthers the narrative of the film which is a rare feat for the Hindi films of the time.Aar-Paar (1954) is a perfectly standard post prison reform drama, the template of which is still being put to use by innumerable commercial Hindi films. However, this film has probably the best soundtrack out of all of his films. The subliminal messaging of the feminism invoked by Mr. and Mrs.55 may be rather restricted to the woman’s ability to choose her own life partner and not much beyond that, it still holds up an extremely watchable romantic comedy. I will refrain from detailing my feelings about Pyaasa and Kaagaz Ke Phool, the latter of which is unequivocally my favorite Hindi film of all time. Perhaps, that can be explored elsewhere. Guru Dutt’s will remain timeless and ageless, and may it be cherished for many generations to come. #gurudutt #hindicinema #goldenageofbollywood #pyaasa #kaagazkephool

In the annals of her life's tapestry, Iqbal Bungalow, a dwelling christened in homage to Meena Kumari's matron, Iqbal Begum, held a hallowed place. At the tender age of 13, young Meena, then known as Baby Mahjabeen, transposed herself from her humble one-room chawl upon Dada Phalke Road in Dadar East. This modest abode was left behind as a tribute to her budding success as a child artist in the world of the silver screen. The year 1946, a momentous threshold marking her ascent as a lead actress in "Bacchon Ka Khel," witnessed Meena Kumari, her father Ali Bux, mother Iqbal Begum, elder sister Khursheed, and younger sister Madhuri embarking on a new chapter. They traversed to the commodious Iqbal Bungalow. This charming manor, adorned with a verdant garden, not only bestowed generous living quarters but also bore witness to Meena's heartfelt devotion to the art of gardening. It marked the inception of the family's initial status symbol. In the ensuing chapters, Meena was graced with a substantial honorarium of Rs 10,000 for her role in the cinematic opus, "Aladdin and the Lamp." This opulent bounty played a vital role in enabling her kin to secure their subsequent cherished status symbol—a second-hand Plymouth automobile in the year 1950. The swift mastery of the craft of driving set her heart afire, kindling a zealous ardor for the realm of motoring. Whenever the opportunity unfurled, she adroitly steered the somewhat timeworn Plymouth through the meandering lanes of Bandra, inscribing yet another chapter in the saga of her family's ascent through the acquisition of status symbols. #MeenaKumari #Residence #IqbalBungalow

In Madras in 1961 Meena became great friends with Nargis (a friendship that was unbroken till her death). Sunil was working with Meena and they were all staying in the same hotel. One evening Mr. and Mrs. Dutt invited Meena for a Chinese dinner. They said they had a table booked. She said she had been working very hard and would prefer an early night. But even the Dutts had problems: who was going to mind their two kids? There were no nannies in the hotel and a late-night Chinese meal was not a good habit to inculcate in the so young. Meena stepped in and offered to mind the children while Mr. and Mrs. Dutt ate chop suey. Before midnight, when they returned to their rooms they found the children missing. Nargis tiptoed into Meena’s chamber and saw her two infants sleeping soundly with Meena on her bed. While the parents were out, the children had received personal and devoted hospitality from Meena. She washed them and cleaned them, helped them into their nightsuits, organized their milk, and finally induced them to sleep with a lullaby. Meena, with great affection, would bestow upon Nargis the endearing title of "Baaji," and, in kind, Nargis reciprocated with the cherished moniker, "Manju." Such was their bond. Meena Kumari's love extended to Nargis' children to such an extent that she would personally attend to their needs. Nargis, a devoted admirer of the craft, held a profound appreciation for Meena Kumari's histrionic talent. She stood as a steadfast pillar, offering unwavering emotional support throughout every phase of Meena's life. Meena's benevolence shone through in her act of donating a portion of her estate to establish a trust for the visually impaired, with Nargis appointed as the chairperson, as per Meena Kumari's last will. "Upon hearing the tidings of Meena Kumari's ailment, Nargis, in a gesture of genuine concern, hastened to inquire about her well-being. Accompanying her was her little daughter, Priya, whom Meena Kumari, in a tender display of affection, cradled in her embrace and engaged in playful merriment." ~ says the caption of Shama 1969 #MeenaKumari #Nargis #PriyaDutt

There's a crushing dichotomy and irony in the posthumous acclaim and respect Guru Dutt achieved. While a lot of great pieces have already been written on the way the artist shaped storytelling, upon his 98th birth anniversary, @aryantalksfilm takes a look at an artist who not only embraced melancholia through his work, but lived it. Zeenat Aman stepped into Bollywood after becoming a highly studious child, winner of Miss Asia Pacific beauty pageant and wrote articles. Zeenat was quite accomplished before she even made a single motion picture. She began making films in 1970, although she wasn't necessarily aspiring to be a Hindi film heroine. Dev Anand cast her in the drama Haré Rama Haré Krishna (1971), which turned Zeenat into a star overnight. Following this was the action films Yaadon Ki Baarat (1973) and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974). The thing that made Zeenat exciting was the fact that she differed from the norm, she was the first Indian actress to play morally ambiguous characters. And she became a fashion icon and revolutionised Indian fashion by introducing western fashion. Aman became one of the most popular actresses and became the highest paid actress in India. Zeenat followed this success with the adventure film Dharam-Veer (1977), which became one of the biggest hits of the decade. Next was the action thriller Don (1978), Zeenat played the iconic action heroine Roma. Her following film would be her most famous. In Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), Aman portrayed Rupa, a girl who is scarred yet sensual. The sensually of the film shocked the public but her performance was highly well praised. Aman next starred in the action film Qurbani (1980), following this came a shocking role as a rape victim in Insaaf Ka Tarazu (1980). One of Zeenat's biggest successes was the action film Laawaris (1981). Zeenat retired in 1985 due to marriage but has subsequently returned in 1999. Most recently, Zeenat is set to star in her first leading role since the 1980s. - - - - - #1970sfashion #1970s #1970sglamour #iconic #icon #oldbollywood #popculture #actress #star #style #fashion #goldenageofbollywood #goldenera #glamour #hindi #zeenataman #beautiful #beauty #bollywood #movies #movie #moviestar

This is Vyjayanthimala (pronounced Vai-jan-tee-mala) Born in August 13, 1936, in Tamil Nadu, when Vyjayanthimala stepped into Hindi cinema, all the odds were against her, she was south Indian, to be specific a Tamilian, south Indian heroines could never make it big in the north Indian audience. But her first Hindi film Bahar (1951) became a major success. Vyjayanthimala was the first of a series of South Indian actresses to dominate Hindi films (a phenomenon that continues today!). But the first years of her Hindi career were not easy. The Tamilian was only known for her dances, something which was also new to the Hindi film audience. It took her role as the prostitute with the heart of gold in Devdas (1955) to make critics view her differently. Suddenly, Vyjayanthimala starred in a series of critically and commercially successful motion pictures. In Naya Daur (1957), she portrayed the village girl love interest. The film was the second highest grossing film of the year. Next came the horror film Madhumati (1958) about a tribal girl who falls in love but it comes with consequences. Madhumati was her most famous and greatest role, it was India's biggest hit. In 1961, she essayed the role of a rustic village belle in the crime drama Gunga Jumna (1961). By the 1960s, India had changed. The simplicity of the 1950s was long gone and the 1960s brought in glamour. Vyjayanthimala adapted herself to this new style, she even wore a swimsuit in the romantic film Sangam (1964), the biggest success of the year. Vyjayanthimala reached her zenith with this film. One of her last notable successes was in the heist thriller Jewel Thief (1967), which includes her best dance sequence "hothon mein aisi baat". Vyjayanthimala married in 1968 and retired from acting two years later. She is 86 and still alive. - - - - - #1950sfashion #1950s #1950sglamour #1960s #1960sfashion #1960sglamour #iconic #icon #oldbollywood #popculture #actress #star #style #fashion #goldenageofbollywood #goldenera #glamour #hindi #classicbollywood #classicalbollywood #vintage #vyjayanthimala #beautiful #beauty #bollywood #movies #movie #moviestar

Happy birthday to Madhuri Dixit. Born in May 15, 1967, to a middle class family, Madhuri studied Kathak dancing from childhood. Initially she aspired to be a marine biologist, but she ended up being an actress after starring in her debut Abodh (1984). Her first initial roles were failures until the action film Tezaab (1988), established herself as one of the most popular actresses. Following this she did another action film Ram Lakhan (1989). She earned praise for her performance in the romantic drama Dil (1990). She followed this with another romantic drama Saajan (1991) and the blockbuster Beta (1992). After the action film Khalnayak (1993), she starred in the musical film Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), which became the highest grossing film in India. However this success was followed by a decline until the highly successful romance film Dil To Pagal Hai (1997). Following a historical drama Devdas (2002), she retired due to marriage. Recently Madhuri made an unsuccessful comeback with Aaja Nachle (2007) and stars in films once in a while. She mostly does dancing shows and is a judge. Madhuri during her prime was praised for her beauty. She was also acclaimed for her balance of critical successes and commercial successes. During her prime she was the highest paid actress in India and along with Sridevi was one of the few female stars who could command as much as the males. She will be remembered as an icon. - - - - - #1990s #iconic #icon #oldbollywood #popculture #actress #star #style #fashion #goldenageofbollywood #goldenera #glamour #hindi #classicbollywood #classicalbollywood #vintage #beautiful #beauty #bollywood #movies #movie #moviestar #madhuridixit

Indian actress Nargis Dutt (1929–1981) is best known for her roles in Hindi films from the 1940s through the 1960s. She began her acting career at the age of 5 as a child artist. She was born Fatima Rashid in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India. She made her acting debut in 1942's "Tamanna" as the lead female. After appearing in several blockbuster films like "Barsaat," "Andaz," "Awaara," "Shree 420," and "Mother India," Nargis went on to become one of the most prosperous and well-known actresses of her time. Her performances in films like "Raat Aur Din" and "Chhalia" have brought her praise from the critics. #nargisdutt #awaara #motherindia #goldenageofbollywood #shree420 #sunildutt #sanjaydutt #indianactress #bollywoodactress #hindicinema #cinemacultured

Remembering Nargis who passed away today in 1981 Nargis was born as Fatima Rashid in 1 June 1929 in Calcutta to a Punjabi Muslim family. She made her first film at age 6, in Talashe Haq. Fatima soon adopted the name Nargis. Her first leading role was in the comedy film Taqdeer (1943) at age 14. She starred in Raj Kapoor's Aag (1948). She portrayed a homeless woman. It was not a hit, however despite this Nargis formed a personal and professional relationship with Raj Kapoor. Soon she portrayed a woman at the center of a love triangle in the drama Andaz (1949), it was the biggest hit in India at the time. This was overtaken by another Nargis classic Rah Kapoor's Barsaat (1949), in which she portrays a village girl. He soon cast her as an outspoken female lawyer in the crime drama Awara (1951). Her role is truly ahead of her time and it was instrumental in proving her long lasting image, that of a strong complex protagonist. Awara was a major hit, becoming the highest grossing film in India. However this huge success was followed by a brief setback in the mid-1950s. She re-emerged with the highly successful social comedy-drama Shree 420 (1955), in which Nargis portrays a school teacher who becomes the love interest of Raj Kapoor's character. Nargis is really great in this role and contrasts with Raj Kapoor's flamboyance. She followed this with a successful romantic comedy Chori Chori (1956), which is a remake of It Happened One Night (1934). This was her last film with Raj Kapoor, their relationship personally and professional ended. Nargis reached her zenith with the Oscar-nominated Mother India (1957), Mother India is one of the best films Indian cinema has ever seen. Nargis gives one of her best performances as a strong mother who's willing to do anything for her children. Not to mention Nargis' Radha is symbol of empowerment for women. Mother India (1957) emerged as the highest grossing film in India and is one of the highest grossing films adjusted for inflation. After Mother India, Nargis had retired from the screen at age 28, she married Sunil Dutt and gave birth to three children including Sanjay Dutt (an acclaimed Indian actor in his own right).

Indian actress Madhubala photographed by James Burke for Life Magazine So sometime a year ago, I posted about Madhubala, I decided why not post her again Madhubala was born February 14, 1933 (ironically she's the love goddess of Hindi films). When she was 8 her family moved to Bombay and she soon began acting in mostly minor roles, by the end of the decade she was commanding lead roles (only at 14! Which was actually common at the time). Madhubala's role as a ghostly woman in Mahal (1949), won her acclaim and turned Madhubala into a star overnight. Following this came a series of box office successes. However this success was followed by a brief decline in the mid-1950s, which only the romantic comedy Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955), in which Madhubala plays an heiress in love, was a major critical and financial success. She had a resurgence in the late 1950s with commercially successful thrillers Howrah Bridge (1958) and Kala Pani (1958). She soon starred in the critically and commercially successful comedy Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), in which she portrayed an urban and independent woman. In 1952, Madhubala accepted the role of Anarkali in Mughal-e-Azam (1960). The film took 7 years to make and was troubled from the start. The cost of the film (rs. 15 million) made it the most expensive film in India. Not to mention Madhubala's romantic relationship with Dilip Kumar (a great Indian actor) had collapsed during filming. The plot follows Anarkali (a courtesan) and Salim (a prince) fall in love against his father's (the emperor) wishes. The film became a major critical success, often cited as one of the best Indian films. The film also broke box office records and became the highest grossing film in India, for 15 years. Unfortunately, during the 1950s, she found out she had a ventricular septal defect, which cut her career short, she basically retired in the early 1960s. Madhubala passed away in 1969, at the age of 36. - - - - - #iconic #icon #oldbollywood #popculture #actress #star #style #fashion #goldenageofbollywood #goldenera #glamour #hindi #classicbollywood #classicalbollywood #vintage #beautiful #beauty #bollywood #movies #movie #moviestar #madhubala

Two of my favourite actresses Nargis and Meena Kumari. Nargis (1929 - 1981) was an Indian actress famous for her sophisticated strong and independent characters, she became one of the most popular actresses of 1950s Hindi cinema. Some of her best films are the crime drama Awara (1951), the comedy-drama Shree 420 (1955) and the epic drama Mother India (1957). Following the latter, she stopped signing films and would return infrequently. Some of her roles are often progressive for the time, such as the lawyer in Awara (1951). Meena Kumari (1933 - 1972) was an Indian actress who was well regarded for her tragic roles. Like Nargis, Meena was a very sought-after actress, becoming one of the most popular actresses of the 1950s and 1960s. Her most famous roles include the lonely alcoholic wife in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) and the tragic courtesan in the drama Pakeezah (1972). The latter was her penultimate film, she passed away in 1972 at age 39. - - - - - #1950sfashion #1950s #1950sglamour #iconic #icon #oldbollywood #popculture #actress #star #style #fashion #goldenageofbollywood #goldenera #glamour #hindi #classicbollywood #classicalbollywood #vintage #beautiful #beauty #bollywood #nargis #movies #movie #meenakumari #moviestar

Vikramaditya Motwane’s latest venture, Jubilee, is an ode to the golden era of films. It gives us a glimpse into how films are made, more specifically how the Hindi film industry that we now know as Bollywood was in the 1940s and 50s. The magnum opus presents a well researched account of starting a studio (Khanna Studios), to the workings of a well established studio (Roy Talkies) and the share of problems that come with them. Apart from excellent set designs, top notch cinematography accompanied with a strong story, the music of Jubilee demands a praise of its own. The entire musical team of Jubilee - Urmila Sutar (Sound Engineer); Aloknanda Dasgupta (Background Score); Amit Trivedi (Composer); Kausar Munir (Lyricist) and acclaimed singers like Sunidhi Chauhan, Mohd. Irfan, Vaishali Made, Papon and others beautifully recreate the magic of the 50s era in the show. But along with those things, Jubilee also shows the evolution of how music was made. In the song ‘udankhatole’ the actors Madan Kumar (Aparshakti Khurrana) and Sumitra Kumari (Aditi Rao Hydari) are allowed only to move in a limited space because the background music is being played and recorded live. A few minutes later, Srikant Roy (Prosenjit Chatterjee) is seen convincing Nanik Jotwanni to invest in a foreign technology equipped recording studio which will allow them to record the playback songs beforehand, thus allowing the introduction of creative elements and freedom in songs of the film. The shift is visible in the songs ‘Itni si baat’ and ‘Na Koyi Mera’. Let's take a more detailed look inside some of the standout tracks from its soundtrack. The idea of filmmakers eying a pastiche to evoke the zeitgeist of an era is nothing new. Afterall, the celebration of mainstream pop-culture to a large extent now amounts to resorting to a sustained longing for the old methods of storytelling. Vikramaditya Motwane remains one of the more versatile storytellers of the Hindi film industry today. He not only shares a deep fascination toward film history, but also often echoes the cultural currents that seep into the medium in his works. With this peace, let's take a deep dive into the visual grammar of Prime Video's "Jubilee" and some of its themes. Out of the many films and storytellers that Vikramaditya Motwane's period drama, "Jubilee", pays homage to, one that stood out was the notable resemblance of Jay Khanna (@sidhant ) to Raj Kapoor. In one of the show's most stunning scenes - of which there are plenty - we watch Jay and Niloufer Qureshi (@wamiqagabbi ) out in the drizzling rain in the middle of a dark night. An homage to Raj Kapoor's extraordinary 1955 classic, "Shree 420", the scene comes at a key point in Jay's struggle against finding out his own purpose as an artist - whether to settle for the mainstreaming of art in the wide desire for commercialization, or to preserve his artistic ambitions for something worthwhile. It's the same dilemma that the newly born nation of ours at the time was going through. More interestingly, one of the key themes in the Raj Kapoor starrer film remained of ‘class’ - one that also becomes a key factor in reinforcing the dichotomy between Binod Das (@aparshakti_khurana ) and Jay. The imagery of cramped roads and footpaths remained prevalent throughout the film, one that posed in front of a grand, spacious mansion, which further conveyed the vast inequality between the two classes of society. While Raj’s interactions in the film brought about themes of corruption and nationalism, the journey of Jay in "Jubilee" acts as a reminder of how the commercialized wheels of the Hindi film industry weren't devoid of inequality even then. Hence, it's this clever acknowledgement of the darker side of the era (and showbiz in general) that keeps "Jubilee" from turning into a silver-coated nostalgia-fest. •The remaining five episodes of the show start streaming on April 14th on Prime Video• #TheRedSparrow #Filmmaking #Jubilee #vikramadityamotwane #primevideo #productiondesign #cinematography #filmcommunity #indianwebseries #tvshow #webseries #goldenageofbollywood #goldenjubilee #silverjubilee #50sbollywood #aparshaktikhurana #aditiraohydari #shree420 #merajootahaijapani #rajkapoor #gurudutt #movielove #udaan #phantomfilms #nowstreaming #indianindependance #partition1947 #baarish #50sbollywood #blackandwhitefilm #cinemascope

"The opening credits of the show, in old school monochrome, lure you into the warm and amber era of 40s India. Most of the plot in Jubilee revolves around studio heads and stars coming together to compound the myth of superstars through a medium of storytelling that continues to aspire millions throughout the country." (Part 3) "Arsenic and old lace. It is one of the best dark comedy movie, it is so funny and i love the cast assembling" - @wilsonclassicmovies "Yesterday today and tomorrow ,gaslight" - @cinema.classic.gentleman "My favourite film is Rebecca(1940). I love this film for its beautiful cinematography, characters, sets, plot and, in particular, Joan’s wonderful performance as Mrs De Winter. Joan captures the character so well, embodying the progressive nature of the character from a young inguenue, to a woman who is self-assured and who, at last, has found her happiness and love. The film also holds a great sentimental value to me as it was the first black and white film I saw, and one of the first Old Hollywood films I watched." - @stars_ofthesilverscreens "My opinion: If I have to choose my favorite movie right now, let it be Camille (1936). I can’t describe in words how beautiful Garbo is as Marguerite Gautier. Her chemistry with Robert Taylor seems so compelling that it makes me cry" - @forgretagarbo *that is such a tough question oh my. i know someone already said this but i’ll say gone with the wind. vivien leigh’s performance as the courageous but flawed scarlett o hara changed my life. never had i seen such brilliant, profound, and meaningful acting. the effort and work put into the production of the film only adds to my appreciation. the chemistry between all of the characters, even the friendships (especially Melanie and Scarlett’s) is portrayed beautifully. the costumes, the sets, the soundtrack…i love it more than anything." - @inlovewithhollywood "Stella Dallas (1937)- A very emotional movie with an excellent story about a strong female and her actions to secure a bright future for her daughter. Remembering Meena Kumari on her 51st Death Anniversary, she died today in 1972 at the young age of 38. Just a bit of background, Meena began working as a child actress and eventually grabbed leading roles into the late 40s. She was one of the most popular and highest paid actresses in the 1950s India. She also had a troubled personal life, which severely affected her life as a result she became an alcoholic. On her film roles, she often portrayed tragic characters, maybe like Garbo. In Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), she portrayed an alcoholic and lonely wife. In 1972, her magnum opus was released. Pakeezah (1972), was a major success and was one of her last films as a courtesan. She died soon after the film was released, as an icon of Indian cinema. - - - - - #1950sfashion #1950s #1950sglamour #1960s #1960sglamour #1960sfashion #iconic #icon #oldbollywood #popculture #actress #style #fashion #goldenera #goldenageofbollywood #glamour #bollywood #classicbollywood #classicalbollywood #vintage #beautiful #beauty #movies #movie #moviestar #meenakumari
