One of the biggest dilemmas as a mixed person is your identity vs. your physical presentation. Often times, people expects you to identify with the race that you physically present most like. However, identity and presentation are two separate factors. You may present as one race yet identify more closely with the other. This is hard for non biracial people to understand because they can only see how you look. A close friend recently said to me, you should find some Indians in your field to talk to as mentors. I quipped back - “I’m not Indian.” While I physically present as Indian, that is not my chosen identity. You have the right to the entirety of your racial background regardless of your presentation. Welcome to the first in a series of posts I’m calling, “Home From Home.” 🌍 Many people think that there can’t be similarities between my cultures, these countries are on opposite sides of the world after all. Actually, I find it easy to draw parallels between Wales and India - and no, we’re not going to talk about those awful jokes people used to make about how an English person trying to do a Welsh accent always ends up sounding “Indian”. That’s pretty offensive to both parties so we’ll skip over that (oh how I wish I’d been able to skip over this during my childhood). I was born in Wales had a thick Welsh accent. Then my family moved to England and eventually it lessened and then of course there was drama school where we all learned our very best RP (received pronunciation) and “Standard English”. We did have an amazing speech teacher who could detect any hint of an accent when someone spoke - she could tell you all the places you’d lived or where your parents were from. She could hear a lot of Welsh in my voice still; although many wouldn’t have found it. This made me proud. For me, there is one glaring similarity between my cultures……colonialism. Over the next few posts I will be going into detail about how England has systematically taken and broken my homelands. This is the same story for so many of us. There are so many ways you can feel like a fraud as a mixed race person. Even when you’re deep in the process of self-acceptance, outside forces can still shake your foundation and old insecurities can read their ugly heads. Let’s look at some of these negative switches….. 🥭Not speaking the language - we’ve covered this one before. 🥭Never having travelled to one of your ancestral countries. 🥭Never having eaten traditional foods, not liking that food or even knowing what the traditional food is! Having children seems to blow the lid off these insecurities…. 🥭Bedtime stories, lullabies, rituals, celebrations and ceremonies. It can almost feel like wherever you turn there are aspects you don’t know about. 🥭Even more so if you don’t practice the religion of your ancestors. 🌍 How do you connect to the different areas of your ancestry? Let’s share tips in the comments……here are some of mine….. 🥭I’ve said before how cooking really helps me. Physically feeling the connections through my fingertips, knowing that these recipes have basically been unchanged for generations and then tasting that ancestry in every bite 🥭Language can be a contentious area for many of us. Not everyone has been brought up speaking all of their languages - but it’s not only about speaking it yourself. Just listening can be incredibly comforting. Find radio stations / tv channels. Listen to music in that language; even if you don’t comprehend all the words - soak in the sounds and vibrations of your culture. 🥭Ask as many questions as you can. I used to feel a bit embarrassed/ ashamed of the things I didn’t know about my culture so I hated having to ask. Then I flipped it and started asking as many questions as possible. The plight of my family and the journey they have taken is a constant source of strength and inspiration to me and you can not squash that down or quiet the voices of the ancestors with all they have done for us. Yet there are times when I don’t feel I have permission to speak on such matters. Indian-side matters that is. And yet these stories are part of my heritage too. I don’t really want to speak about white issues, I don’t have a lot to say. The whole world is built and structured on that. Yes, some of that is my story, but it’s been told and has so much space afforded to it already. I have felt compelled to carve out my own niche. With so much to say and no tangible community to align with; I am so happy to have found my little corner of the internet and so many people who understand and just get it. How I identify has evolved throughout my life. It has shifted and remoulded many times. I moved through mostly white spaces where they all thought I was not white. This heavily influenced how I identified and lead to me to up my Asian-ness or sometimes to identify as solely as Punjabi/Indian/South Asian. At the time I thought I was claiming something which had been gatekept from me by the Asian community to which I supposedly belonged. But in reality this was just to make things easier when all the white people needed an answer as to why I’m beige. Going through a lengthy period of feeling cut off and even rejected from my Punjabi people may at times have lead me to swing all the way back in the other direction. Though that never lasted long (see above: re beige). Then there are the times when I have projected mixed as my identity. These periods have been less frequent and shorter. You see although this is my authentic truth it only leads to more questions and scrutiny which as an awkward teenager I very much wanted to avoid! Aaaannnndddd that brings us to today. Now I am so much more confident to claim and hold one identity as mixed-race because this is so multi-faceted it’s literally the only right choice for me. There is so much nuance and complexity within mixed-ness. A whole spectrum which blends and shapeshifts within us. Personally I hold this as a strength, although it’s taken me a long time to get to that point! We don’t need to be defined in fixed terms, we can be fluid and have access to conversations and places that mono racial people will never have. Using code-switching to seamlessly move between worlds which we have historically been taught should not mix means that we can always read the room. We understand exclusion on a deeper level because we face it from every angle. There’s something about breaking us down into fractions and percentages….. Something in that which makes us smaller and picks us apart to be palatable to the observer. Dividing us up to suit their expectations. It’s so hard to be authentically my whole self when people insist on portioning me up. The fact that strangers expect an explanation for my existence has always been inappropriate but in 2022 it is also most definitely out-dated! We’ve talked a bit about my formative years. One thing I gained from that was a pretty thick skin. Opinionated, never afraid to jump on a soapbox and protest injustice - I even earned myself the clever nickname of “Women’s Rights” from the boys of year 9🙄 Let’s jump forward a bit……I was totally owning my mixed-ness, happily presenting with confidence and bossing any “where are you from?” questions. Then I went to drama school…. Despite having been in the business and acting for years by this point - I have never been so pigeonholed before. The casting process is all about appearances. I was always told that casting directors are inherently lazy. They want to see someone walk in the room and know exactly “what” they are. This is extremely difficult for a mixed person. Having an outwardly ambiguous appearance does not compute. That means that I was in a constant struggle to present or choose one particular side. Easier said than done when every new director or teacher I met would tell me that, to them, I distinctly looked white or Asian or Middle Eastern etc. It became almost impossible to break past the first impressions. I went out into the business and was basically being racially profiled every single day. Nobody ever apologised for it because ostensibly, this was their exact job and I should just deal. You’re prepared for rejection you’re prepared to be told you’re not right for a role because you’re too tall or short and you’re just supposed to accept it because there will be a role and eventually everything will fall into place. But when it comes to racial ambiguity the same rules do not apply. EDIT: to add. For a long time I used to worry about all the cultural traditions I didn’t fully understand. This saying. That festival. Which song do we sing at that time of year? In my defensive mindset I would automatically assume this was because I’m mixed and that must be the reason. So I would ask a relative to explain and discover they didn’t know either, they would just say, “that’s just how we’ve always done it.” Together we would have to consult a particular Aunty because she’s the only one who knows the “real rules” I’ve called this a defensive mindset because it was triggering and made me feel sad and lacking and brought home all my insecurities. Realising that everyone else doesn’t know these things either was a revelation. Then actually seeing that it has nothing to do with being mixed, it’s more likely to do with living in a modern world or a little further away from the homeland; suddenly there is palpable relief. Maybe we’re all struggling to hold onto our cultural connections. Or maybe some of us are happier letting them slip and taking the bits that serve us well. Living in two cultures doesn’t just cause issue for ethnically mixed people. Being part of the diaspora already brings this. Things people have compared me to. So here goes then……over the years I’ve had many conversations about the specific colour of my skin - the funny thing is that I don’t remember asking for anyone’s input (except maybe on set when I’ve had to question a foundation shade mismatch). I’ve had people compare my skin to foodstuffs, to animals, and even once to a specific tree bark. This is pretty dehumanising. I also wonder why? Just simply why do people feel the need to do this? I still can’t fathom it. Then there are the old classic comments like, “hey I got a spray tan and now I’m more Asian than you.” “My coffee is too milky - it’s the same shade as you!” I could write pages on this topic but I’m just going to share a couple of real-life experiences. For years I was compared to the Disney version of Mowgli , a fictional, male cartoon character. This is most likely because this was literally the only Indian person most of my peers had ever heard of at the time. My very first experience of direct racism was at primary school when a girl told me I couldn’t get changed near her because I was, “milk chocolate,” and she was, “milky bar.” When I switched senior schools in year 9 I was given a leaving present by my friends. It was a doll of Disney’s Pocahontas - for quite some time this had been my nickname. This important historical figure was co-opted and fictionalised (not a good way!) by Disney - making this offensive to many more people than just me! Oh and then of course there was Princess Jasmine, the fictional Princess of fictional Agrabah. Possibly a city by the River Jordan? Possibly somewhere in India? Disney doesn’t care - let’s just mush all that brown stuff together right?! What did my white mother teach me about dealing with racism? My mother undoubtedly faced discrimination from my father’s family because of her background but growing up, or in the rest of the world, that was not the case. So how could she help me navigate a path she had never taken? The answer to that lies in the fact that she was a fierce force of nature. Every-single-time I came home and told her about an incident she was OUTRAGED! There was never a grey area - this was unacceptable! She would march into that school/write a strongly worded letter/jump on the landline in an instant to make this clear. She taught me to never accept it, never excuse it. To be resolute in the fact that this was unjust. To never shy away or find reasons why someone would throw a racist slur at me - or a racist punch/slap. To cut a long story short (too late) she gave me a gift which I wore like armour - she gave me the outrage of a white woman. It’s not that my mum was a Karen - it’s just that the world she inhabited was different. If there was something she didn’t like or she was treated in a way she deemed unfair, she could speak up without a particular fear of reproach. Navigating the world in brown skin means you cannot automatically live this way.
