To make this material straw is coated in a clay slip (viscous mixture of clay and water) and compacted into wall cavities, held in place by either temporary or permanent formwork. Light straw clay is natural, insulative, and fire-resistant. It works in both new construction and select retrofitting situations. SPRING PREFAB UPDATES! Remember the Dogtrot Mod being built in the northeast that the client named "the Little Lab"? This prefab house, another *modified* Dogtrot Mod from our Green Cabin Kits line of modern prefab homes, was purposely built backward- the smaller guest unit was constructed years ago while the client continued to live in their beautiful, historical, but not-energy-efficient farmhouse in the northeast. Only once it was time to downsize from the farmhouse and move to their soon-to-be-finished prefab home did they plan to construct the main unit, and for this, they decided on using HempBLOCK and hempwool insulation. Adelaide City Skatepark Kiosk & Skate shop proposal. Located in the western parklands on the Eastern side of the skate park. The Building has been proposed to be constructed in an all timber structure and cladding, with hempcrete walls. To anchor the structure to the ground, stainless steel screw piles have been proposed to replace concrete, reducing interference with significant trees root systems and reducing the building C02 foot print. The roof allows space for a large PV array, meaning the building can provide for its energy use. Hidden in the form is space for water tanks, waste storage, batteries and mechanical systems. The building creates a screen to west terrace, whist maintaining views into the skate park from the street (passive surveillance). A large shaded deck allows onlookers to view the skatepark and ovals beyond. Adobe is a mixture of high-clay content dirt, sand, and straw that is poured into wooden forms (a standard size is 10”x14” or 25.4 x 35.6cm), removed from the forms when partially set up, then left to air dry for several days or weeks. The finished bricks are laid in a mortar made of more or less the same ingredients (minus the straw – with more sand and water). In some Southwestern states in the U.S., adobe meets building codes as long as your first two courses are built with “stabilized” adobe bricks that have been made with a bit of cement in the mixture to increase their strength. As many of you know, our house on Djaara country in Castlemaine is currently being built and is close to completion, ready for occupancy at the end of May. We are looking to fill one remaining room and the recent addition of a tiny house that will act as an additional room on the property. The house has been built from hempcrete and is solar passive, air filtered, and there is also soundproofing between bedrooms. Big beautiful kitchen and living area as well as additional lounge and co-working study, 8 bedrooms, huge dam situated on 10 acres, 5kms from Castlemaine train station. The place holds a vision for long-term secure share housing with a very low footprint. People interested in living with us will be the kind of people who are excited about living and working with others to homestead, grow majority of food at home, willing to be host community eventa, be committed to communication, and also emotionally responsible. We will have a 90 minute meeting each week alternating between a logistics based meeting and a heart share based meeting along with fortnightly commitment to working, cooking for everyone a night a week and food/resource sharing. It's a big brave step and not for the faint-hearted but for those willing to make steps towards changing the way we live and relearning how to live together. Desired commitment us 12 months but there's some flexibility for the right person/people. There is a formal lease agreement in place, initially for 1 year and then 5 years. We are currently 10 adults, 3 kids and a dog.
