Last week’s official pre-event walk-thru at Grand Central Air Terminal left me smitten with the one and only Bob Gurr and even more appreciation for Steve Spiegel aka sign hunter @ColorbySpiegel who I finally met in person! Okay, enough about the personalities that are part of Saturday’s event at the historic Air Terminal. Now about this building! Today I saw some slides of the condition of the building prior to restoration and how they recreated so much of the deteriorated decorative plasterwork to make the building whole again. This is what makes those of us emotionally affected by architecture cry. Thank you Disney for spending the money to do this! The work EverGreene did on the interior second floor is exquisite! They also worked on Radio City Music Hall and the Egyptian Theatre’s recent renovation. Steve tipped me off that some of the historic hangars (that may have housed movie star planes) still exist on that street, so I walked down to see what else I could see in the neighborhood. Also found a municipal light and power button my walk. I love industrial areas... I’m very excited to present this event as the Art Deco Society’s Preservation Month program. Steve will be emceeing the show and talking with Jeff Greene of EverGreene and preservation project architect John Berley as well as Disney legend Bob Gurr. Людина, яка вивела автопромисловість на принципово новий рівень, перетворивши її з виробництва предметів розкоші для товстосумів на дійсно масову індустрію для середнього класу. Ідеї Форда багато у чому випереджали свій час, тому йому мимоволі довелося підтягувати й «нецільові» напрямки. Наприклад, для виробництва автомобілів використовували руду, що добувалася на рудниках Форда. Тому не дивно, що Форд виробляв не тільки автомобілі, а ще й літаки, був власником Ford Airlines. Саме у цей день, 14 квітня 1925 року, був здійснений перший рейс першої у світі регулярної вантажної авіалінії. На лінії працювали літаки, побудовані у компанії, яка належала Форду. Рейси виконувалися з Аеропорту Форда для перевезення автомобільних комплектуючих між заводами Форда. Завдяки Форду, буквально за кілька років після відкриття авіалінії, світова авіація вперше отримала ось такий список речей: 1. Перші вогні на смузі для нічної посадки на усіх аеродромах компанії (1924). 2. Перша радіонавігація на кожному літаку компанії (1926). 3. Перші масові поштові перевезення (1926). 4. 7 квітня 2006 вперше здійнявся в небо найбільш незвичайний та загадковий апарат, який колись був створений корпорацією Boeing - багаторазового орбітального корабля X-37 Orbital Test Vehicle. Спойлер для розпалювання інтересу: «У кінці 2004 року, після низки затримок, створення X-37 було передано з NASA в Агентство з перспективних оборонних науково-дослідних розробок США (DARPA). Це одразу дало помітний результат: перший тестовий політ X-37A (шляхом скидання з носія), було здійснено вже через півтора року (навесні 2006). Після випробувань, восени 2006 року, ВПС США оголосили, що вони будуть продовжувати розвивати орбітальний варіант X-37B. Тут то й виявилася головна інтрига цього проекту, яка полягає у тому, що дотепер точно невідомо, для чого саме ВПС США побудували та використовують цей орбітальний літак (вся подібна інформація знаходиться під грифом «цілком таємно»). Це дуже цікавий момент, бо така ситуація не є характерною для відкритого американського суспільства, в якому Конгрес зазвичай пильно контролює місцевих військових» З того часу Х-37 завершив уже 6 тривалих польотів, останній з яких завершився наприкінці 2022 року (в одному з них він пробув 2.5 роки!), але досі особливості його будови та застосування огорнуті завісою таємниці. His Majesty's Airship R101 being unveiled for the first time in its hangar in Cardington Airfield, sometime before its first and final flight in 1930. R101 was a tale of hope, stupidity, and British Imperialism. She was built as one of two sister ships (the other being R100) by the Royal Airship Works. The plan was to have R100 make round trips from the UK to Canada and R101 to make the far longer journey from the UK to India. However, it was not meant to be. As it was passing over France, the Top front section of the airship ripped open (an issue that had been identified earlier). She began to dive as one of several hydrogen filled gas bags was torn open by a gust of wind and spilled its contents into the atmosphere (these gas bags were made of cattle intestines stitched together and could be torn by a simple poke of the finger). The crew applied full rudder up and engine power to try and escape the crash but at this moment the (notoriously weak) ruddle cables snapped. However, the Airship momentarily stopped it's dive and held level flight before losing so much hydrogen that the ship was no longer lighter than air. Collision with the ground was deemed impossible at this point and engines were switched off and ballast released. In all fairness to the crew (who's captain was known for his heavy drinking problem and had most likely been drinking just hours before the crash) they managed a fairly smooth landing, hitting the ground at just slower than perfect landing speed. But the angle of the landing meant that R101 continued into a forest at which point she began to be torn apart. As the stern of the ship came to rest, the starboard bow side diesel engine made contact with hydrogen releasing from the ship and a massive fire ensued (these engines were installed because it was believed they would not set the hydrogen alight). The fire was rapid and claimed 47 of the 54 crew, though one more later died of his injuries. The crash put an end to the Airship program in the UK, although it persisted for a few more years in other countries until the final nail in the coffin that was the Hindenburg disaster.

First Airline in the Middle East Egypt Air Egypt Air was founded in June 1932, becoming the 7th airline in the world. EGYPT AIR started commercial operations in August 1933 with the Spartan Cruiser between Cairo and Alexandria. The Spartan Cruiser was a 1930s British three-engined transport monoplane for 6 to 10 passengers. In rapid succession Mursa Matruh, Aswan, and Port Said were added to the network. There were stops at Asyut and Luxor. In 1935 EGYPTAIR received 12 De Havilland. The Egyptian government took over EGYPTAIR during WWII and changed its name to Misr Airlines. In 1946 the airline name changed once again to MisrAir. In February 1957, Misrair was renamed United Arab Airlines. From 1971 until present the airline is named Egypt Air. It defied the odds with its revolutionary design by Nikolai Polikarpov. As the first cantilever monoplane fighter with retractable landing gear, it marked a significant leap for the fledgling Soviet aviation industry. Its resilience shone through in World War II, with production resuming swiftly after the the war escalated. Surpassing expectations, it served until 1950, notably in Spain. Its nicknames, "Ishak", "Rata", and "Mosca", reflecting its personality and adaptability. Політ почався 26 лютого, коли В-50 злетів з авіабази Касвелл (Форт-Уерт, штат Техас) та закінчився 2 березня, коли екіпаж повернувся на той самий аеродром. Переліт тривав 94 години, впродовж яких літак подолав відстань 37 742 км. Середня швидкість польоту склала 401 км/год. Попри те, що літак був оснащений величезним додатковим паливним баком у бомбовідсіку, потрібно було чотири рази поповнювати у польоті запаси його палива за допомогою літаків-заправників. 25 лютого 1941 року вперше піднявся у повітря німецький надважкий транспортний планер Messerschmitt Me-321. Можна було б не згадувати про це, оскільки сам він був хоч і досить оригінальною, але не особливо вдалою машиною, яка була швидко виведена з експлуатації. Однак, цей незвичайний апарат став основою для літака, який відкрив абсолютно нову епоху та виявився пращуром усіх сучасних військово-транспортних літаків. Йдеться про Messerschmitt 323 «Gigant». На жаль, він майже невідомий широкому загалу, хоча саме на ньому вперше були використані такі новації, як «відкидний» ніс для завантаження та розвантаження техніки, основне шасі з декількома опорами та багато інших цікавих технічних рішень. Ми вважаємо такий стан справ несправедливим та найближчим часом розповімо вам про цей, як полюбляють зараз казати, «інноваційний» літак! P.S. Цікавий факт: для буксирування цього дуже важкого планера німцям довелося розробити ще одну вельми оригінальну конструкцію: здвоєний бомбардувальник He-111Z Zwilling, який було побудовано шляхом з’єднання двох звичайних бомбардувальників у сіамські близнюки. 18 лютого 1977 року у повітря вперше піднялася американська «мрія» – Boeing 747 SCA з елементом новітньої космічної системи – кораблем «Shuttle orbiter» на спині, що стала прообразом радянських ВМ-Т «Атлант» та Ан-225 «Мрія». У процесі остаточного пропрацювання програми «Space Shuttle» перед її розробниками серед іншого постали дві проблеми. Перша – як робити льотні випробування її орбітальної системи – власне самого космольоту «Shuttle orbiter»? Адже цей ступінь не мав своєї окремої силової установки, що дозволяла їй самостійно злітати! Кожна авіаційна «фірма» з плином часу накопичує свої самобутні звичаї. Не стала винятком й The Boeing Company. Однією з таких «традицій» є завзяте бажання підіймати свої новинки у повітря на початку лютого. Тож саме 9 лютого 1963 року злетів Boeing 727 - перший лайнер компанії, проданий у кількості понад 1000 штук! Нам здається, що це чудовий привід розповісти про нього дещицю цікавих фактів. Почнемо з того, що інженери Боїнга взялись проектувати 727-й після ретельного вивчення потреб покупців із розрахунку на те, що замовники куплять у них близько 250 літаків. Проте лайнер вийшов настільки вдалим, що за 21 рік випуску (з 1963 по 1984) Boeing продав авіакомпаніям 1841 машину! Такого видатного комерційного успіху вдалося досягти завдяки тому, що фахівці Боїнга вперше ризикнули поєднати в одному літаку цілу низку новаторських рішень. По-перше, це високомеханізоване крило з трищілинними закрилками (використані вперше у світі), що забезпечило чудові злітно-посадкові характеристики. По-друге - допоміжна силова установка, яка зробила літак незалежним від стаціонарних джерел живлення на невеликих слабо обладнаних аеродромах. По-третє, використання реверсу на всіх трьох двигунах*. Саме завдяки цим та іншим технічним новаціям (наприклад, вбудованому трапу) В727 був дуже радо прийнятий авіакомпаніями, тому в 1960-х швидко поширився за межі США, особливо в країни Латинської Америки та Середземномор’я. Влучно підібрана комбінація таких новинок та грамотний маркетинг призвели до того, що до появи на початку 80-х Mcdonnell Douglas MD-80 у Боїнга фактично не було вагомих конкурентів у цьому сегменті. Ні радянський Ту-154, ні англійський Trident, ні французький Mercure не мали технічної можливості на рівних протистояти американському літаку. Саме тому машина змогла стати наймасовішим лайнером у своєму класі**. Виведення на ринок B727 дало компанії значну перевагу перед конкурентами з «McDonnell Douglas» та проторувало шлях іншому масовому авіалайнеру фірми. Авіакомпанії, що вже звиклі працювати з Boeing, майже «автоматично» почали замовляти в них й літак нового покоління - Boeing 737. P.S. Пізніше літак отримав гвинт змінного кроку та низку інших нововведень. Попри всі ці переваги, машина Боїнга з тріском програла у конкурентній боротьбі дітищу іншого видатного американського авіавиробника – Douglas Aircraft Company геніального Дональда Дугласа, який майже в той самий час створив лінійку DC-1/2/3 «Дакота», що трохи згодом стане всесвітньо відомою та розпочне нову епоху у цивільній авіації. Через цю поразку Boeing 247 був зроблений у кількості всього 75 шт. Всупереч провалу із масовим випуском, виготовлені лайнери показали себе дуже надійними та добротними машинами, тому повноцінно використовувалися на авіалініях аж до Другої світової війни. 15 січня 2009 року пасажирський авіалайнер Airbus 320 (рейса 1549) майже відразу після зльоту з аеропорту Нью-Йорка ще до набору безпечної висоти зіткнувся з пташиною зграєю. У результаті цього в нього одразу ж відмовили обидва двигуни. Капітан Челсі Салленбергер майже не мав часу на аналіз ситуації, що склалася, тож одразу прийняв вельми ризиковане рішення: посадити A320 на студені води річки Гудзон. Завдяки високому професіоналізму екіпажу ніхто зі 155 пасажирів суттєво не постраждав*. З одного боку, капітан у дуже скрутних умовах зміг забезпечити безпеку людей, але з іншого - піддав їх ризику аварійної посадки та втопив літак. Річ у тім, що були незначні шанси розвернутися та сісти в аеропорту, але пілоти не скористалися цією можливістю. Цей факт став ключовим питанням тривалого розслідування, у результаті якого дії Салленбергера врешті-решт були визнані правильними. Sometimes feedback comes from where you least expect it... I am happy to see that other people see in my paintings exactly what I want to bring out. When I recreate aerial combat, I want the viewers to be able to feel how the aircraft moves. I want them to see the movements that the pilots causes, to be able to immagine what came before, and to imagine what will come next. The time sequence, even if it takes tenths of a second, is important. In an aerial dogfight, seconds are several meters apart in distance. Aircraft are not stationary; they move on three axes relative to the ground, both in relation to each other, and both in relation to the bullets and smoke. Hangar / Type ‘A’ Aircraft Shed at Martlesham Heath, Suffolk. The 7 pitched-roof building is the first type of the permanent and opening hangars designed in 1924. This particular hangar was home to 22 Squadron B Flight where they tested and reported on bomber types and large civil passenger aircraft. Testing at Martlesham ended in 1939, when the Experimental Units were moved to Boscombe Down.
