Their numbers have seen a dramatic decline in recent decades and they're now classed as vulnerable to extinction in the UK. However, there are a number of things we can each do to help these adorable critters. 🦔 HEDGEHOG HIGHWAYS - hedgehogs need to roam large distances to find enough food. Put a hedgehog sized doorway in your garden gate and fence to enable them freedom of movement. 🔥 CHECK YOUR BONFIRES - Each autumn, hedgehogs look for snuggly places to go into hibernation, and a pile of logs will look like the perfect nesting spot. As we approach bonfire night this autumn, make sure you check your bonfire heaps before lighting to ensure no hedgehogs are nesting in there. 🌿 CHECK GARDEN BORDERS - hedgehogs are often injured from garden strimmers or other garden tools as a result of people clearing undergrowth without realising hedgehogs are nesting there. Little Topaz arrived on the 8th of September after being handed in to Metivet North Wooton. The little female hoglet had suffered some trauma to her nose exposing an area of her sinuses.Possibly caused from entrapment in netting or machinery. 💔😢 Topaz is currently on pain relief , anti inflammatory meds and antibiotics. The skin on her nose is granulating well. Dr Nelson will perform surgery to fully close once little Topaz has grown a little. This morning she weighed in at 100g +7g. Meet 4 beautiful, abandoned little hoglets rescued from Denton, Fakenham today. Thank you to Victoria for recognising they were in trouble , Angela for picking up the sos on the ‘Saving hedgehogs all over the Uk’ group and to Lee a WhatsApp driver for springing into action to get them help so quickly. The hoglet’s weigh in at 46g to 53g. Sadly, two of them have strimmer injuries, all four of them were covered in fly strike. Two of them had first stage maggots 🤬All have been removed. The four hoglet’s were very reluctant to initially feed but have got into more of a rhythm as the evening has progressed. All at Emma’s Hedgehog Hospital would like to send congratulations to Elaine and Anton on their wedding day today. 💒👰♀️🤵💍🥂🍾 Yesterday on the eve of their wedding they were frantically rescuing and searching for more hoglets after discovering two out under a tree in the middle of the lawn. Both hoglets were completely covered in flystrike! 🪰🤬 Myself and Anton quickly set to work trying to remove the fly eggs before they hatched. Anton took the challenge of a crash course in fly removal well👏 Veil 46g and Champers 45g came along to work with me for assessment. Not long afterwards Elaine and Anton brought two more to Millhouse vets where all four had a sniff of anaesthetic gas to ensure we could remove any remaining or in the case of Top Hat 48g and Confetti 46g start to work on them. Meet little Henrietta from Heacham. She was found out in the day wandering along a road. Scary stuff for a little hoglet! Huge thanks to Chloe and her sister for rescuing her and seeking help. Chloe has been checking the area daily to see if she could find any siblings. None have been found. Henrietta is extremely mischievous so I’m hoping she wandered off from the nest on a lone adventure. Henrietta gained 4g overnight and now weighs 108g. This little girl was rushed to me last night, bleeding profusely and struggling to breath. She was given emergency treatment for shock, some strong pain relief and kept warm. I fully expected her not to last the night, given she is just a baby at 250grams and the condition she was in, but she had other ideas! For those who may be wondering about the day old hoglets that came in on Friday they are doing well! Still a long way to go and so much that can go wrong, but they are currently feeding and toileting well. As they came from an allotment I have named them Pea and Sprout. Little Pea (17 grams on arrival) has gained 5 grams whilst her brother sprout (22 grams on arrival) has been a little more of a difficult feeder and has only gained 2. Still, a gains a gain. If you ever wondered what an angry hedgehog sounded like… meet Little Pink. Little Pink is definitely not a morning person😂as you can see from this clip. Little Pink was born at the rescue. Sadly Tamara his mother found looking after him a bit tricky. So after careful monitoring of his weight the decision was made to remove him from his mum. He was’nt thriving in the nest environment 😢 Huge thanks to Rachael 🎉👏for hand rearing him. Little Pink weighed 65g on separation. Today he weighs a fabulous 275g and will be off to an indoor fosterer shortly. Meet Marshall, Skye and Bluey who were thankfully discovered out in the day in Terrington StClement on the 1/7 and 3/7. Bluey weighed 83g and was covered in fly strike. I also removed tiny maggots from one of hers ears. She now weighs 150g. Skye weighed in at 88g. She is now up to 123g. Marshall weighed in at 78g. He also had flystrike and live maggots which were removed. He’s now up to 162g. All three have been treated for salmonella.They will be starting worming meds tomorrow. Dehydrated and covered in fly strike they were found just in time. They were warmed up in the incubator and rehydrated then transferred to a heatpad. Here’s new admit Nobby 72g and Sam 76g tucking into their evening meals of milk and gloop/puppy mousse. We currently have just under 30 hoglets in the rescue frantically munching their way through trays and trays of puppy mousse. They are a lot of work, very time intensive but very rewarding when they make it through and are eventually released. Clean and weigh day today for Hutch 5. The mum and 4 hoglets arrived after being discovered in a garden in West Winch, Kings Lynn on the 11th June. Ufortunately the garden was too dangerous to leave then so thankfully Julia one of our WhatsApp drivers went and collected them.Mum has been named as Oceania. The hoglets are named Starfish 116g, Seahorse 157g, Seashell 147g and Sea urchin 143g. The Three Wise Monkeys…. Taking feeds every two hours and passing urine and faeces after stimulation. Meet three new arrivals…. Three abandoned hoglets from Wisbesch. Mum and hoglets had been disturbed when their finder was raking a boarder. The pictures show the nest which was very shallow and not concealed very well. I imagine mum must have been in a rush when preparing the nest. Sadly Mum ran off and after several hours of the finder watching out for her return , she got in contact with me. There was no evidence of Mum around. 😪 The hoglets would have definitely become cold and drowned in this torrential rain and thunderstorms we are currently experiencing. They are now snuggled up in the Lisa Angel incubator. Blue and green have taken 0.7mls of specialist milk and pink has taken 0.5mls. All three will be fed hourly and stimulated to pass urine and faeces. I cannot stress that these are very immature hoglets at the best 24-36 hours.
