El Dorado is one of our absolute favorite hop varieties. A proprietary variety developed by @cls_farms and released in 2010, El Dorado is a high alpha, high oil hop that works as the “glue” for any beer as it can bridge and support a wide variety of aromas. Its pick window is especially important. Early pick lots of El Dorado impart mild citrus aromas. Middle maturity introduces watermelon and pear notes. Late pick El Dorado is known for its intense apricot, pineapple, cherry, and lemon candy aromas. More than 20 farms are licensed to grow El Dorado, making it an affordable, easily accessible hop with a wide range of aromas due to differences in terroir. How did El Dorado get its name? I took this photo on the hops harvest day to check if it's ready. The hops cones should be dry, similar to very thin paper. The aroma should be consistent with your hops type, and if you run a cone between your palms, they should get sticky. It comes from the tiny yellow spots - lupulin glands and the leaves - bracteoles. They are the source of resins, alpha acids, and oils, which give beer its bitterness and aromas. A bit over a week ago, I saw the very first flower buds, and now some are blooming, some are on the way, and more new flower buds can be seen. I'll start collecting matured flowers in about a week, then dry them in an oven and freeze them for later use. Royal Hops. 👑 👑 👑 🌱 🌱 🌱 I got an idea of growing some hops (Humulus Lupulus) on our side yard fence and accidentally found out by Google search that my ex-colleague Vesa from Sonera times 20 years back is now specialized in brewing and growing hops. Great news! Me likes beer and hops, too! 🍻 This specific plant he grows for brewing is so famous that it was mentioned in some articles and interviews so I stopped looking for any other sources and contacted this hops&brew master to find out if it would be possible to get some of it. After some turns and couple of weeks I have now this small sprout of hop plant that is direct descendant of the legendary plants from Bromarv village of Tammisaari (Eknäs) that were known of their high quality already hundreds of years ago. The fame of these epic Finnish hops was actually so high that they were once used exclusively for brewing all the beer for Swedish Royal Court (well before mellan öl era). The hop master Vesa told me that the history and 'blood line'of this plant has been verified by genetic test and its flowers were also tested in brewing laboratory in Germany. Quality was verified to be excellent exceeding all the German brewing standards with flying colors. And you know, Germans are prretty strict about their brewing standards! One year ago, I got five chinook hop saplings, roots only. I planted them, and they grew taller than 2m (6ft)! They tried to grow even higher, but I didn’t want to disturb my upstairs neighbors. As the fall came, their veins withered, turned brown and lost their leaves. The winter was relatively mild, but I wasn’t sure the plants would survive, but they did! I noticed new branches from one of the plants a week ago and two others showing their days later. I wasn’t sure about the last two plants. Luckily today, upon close inspection, I saw they are also alive. One has a tiny leaf, while the other has a few new branches growing. Two weeks after the hops flowers started showing their final form, they are blooming in all their green and fluffy glory. Three hop plants have fully formed flowers while the other two seem two be one or two weeks behind. In any way, the first attempt of growing hops, in general, and in pots on a balcony in the middle of a city, specifically, was a huge success considering zero previous experience. All that is left is to collect the flowers and put them into a new brew! On a side note, tomatoes are doing less well. One plant didn't give any theirs, from the other four only two gave more than a few fruits. Tomatoes are fruits! In other news, my little garden of hops is going strong and a week ago I noticed that something strange going on, many little fuzzy buds appeared at the very top of a few plants. I wasn’t sure what was it as I haven’t seen hops growing before, not until you can see cone-shaped flowers. But now one can see them taking the form, becoming tiny little hop flowers! I’m super excited to see them grow, hopefully, they will be ready to harvest by the end of September! My little garden of hops exceeded all expectations. When I got them earlier this year, they were just roots but now they are over two meters high! The heat of the last few weeks dried them a bit, despite daily watering, but they are still going strong. Many new bright green vines are growing, trying to jump from one plant to another one or grow higher than the stakes. #ArchivesAtoZ: “V” is for Verso The "verso" is the side of a leaf or sheet meant to be read second, or the back side. This paycheque was issued to J. Clark from the Canadian Hop Growers Limited of Chilliwack, BC in September 1931 for picking 1697 lbs of hops. It features Clark's endorsement and a bank stamp on the verso (second image). Hops are the cone-shaped flowers of the female hops plant Humulus lupulus. They are used to contribute bitterness, flavour and stability to beer. By the 1940s, the Chilliwack area was the largest hops-growing region in the British Commonwealth but the industry drastically declined in the 1990s due to a number of factors, including international competition.
