It’s not Disneyland, it’s a real city with actual people living there. Venice played a huge part in international politics throughout the Medieval crusades, lending fleets and sending mercenaries and armies led by high clergy and the doges during the Fourth Crusade to besiege Constantinople in 1204. Lots of riches and goldsmiths works were plundered and distributed throughout Europe after that. Still, in Renaissance times, Venice was a mighty European power. Nowadays, the city is besieged itself by tourists, cruise ships are banned, fortunately. One of these occasional tourists is me, navigating different libraries and archives. A small reminder to learn basic Italian once you’re visiting, thank you, sorry, hello and goodbye work wonders. Locals will be ever so grateful for respectful visitors. Marco is officially finished! I'm renumbering him as Horse8 and he takes his place in the project. Customised 'Our Generation' toy horse, using a mix of wire, foil, Supersculpey, Das Pronto and Apoxie Sculpt. Once the resculpt was finished, Marco was primed with Montana Gold spray paint in mushroom colour, followed by Burnt Umber acrylic, Gold acrylic and specialised Verdigris effect paint. Burnt Umber mixed with black was used for eye detailing and darkening the lower legs. I don't usually put myself in the picture but this is my selfie for February's NaMoPaiMo - National Model Painting Month, and I like the sense of scale it gives to my latest horse and first ever custom horse. I've chopped the head and feet off an Our Generation toy horse, sculpted replacements and attached them with wire, foil, glue & Apoxie sculpt clay. The end goal is to have an approximation of one of the Bronze Horses of San Marco in Venice. I'm going to paint it to look like antique verdigris copper (the orginal Bronze Horses are made of copper!) with added distressed goldleaf over the top. Emperor Alexios V Doukas Mourtzouphlos tried in vain to rally the people to one last defense of the city, but everybody panicked and nobody heeded his call. Mourtzouphlos himself soon had to escape, taking Alexios III's family along with him (because his lover was Eudokia Angelina, Alexios' daughter). The last Emperor from the unbroke imperial line of succession since Augustus fled into Thrace. The Varangian Guard were among the few who bothered to put up a fight to the Crusaders and killed many of these barbarians, but even they were human and could not stop the onslaught of the Latins. For days Constantinople was sacked brutally. Many people have already talked about what was lost from this heinous crime: destruction of churches and priceless ancient treasures, including life-like statues, Venetians stealing the horses which now stand in front of San Marco and the Tetrachs statue, the tombs of previous Emperors looted for gold.... the human suffering was no less devastating and many were killed or raped. Thousands lost their homes and were forced to migrate. The horses of San Marco. This Quadriga has seen the most prosperous cities of its time. The sculptures were probably made in ancient Rome and then brought to Constantinople. In the fourth crusade, the horses were robbed by the Republic of Venice and later placed at St. Mark's Basilica. Napoleon, on the other hand, robbed the Quadriga and had it brought to Paris. They have been back in Venice since 1815. The Horses of San Marco By Tom Parsons, 16th June 2021 6pm The Horses of San Marco that overlook the Piazza, above the main entrance arch to the most splendid and important of Venice’s churches, are replicas. The originals stand now inside, in a rather dark corner on an upper floor, moved here in the 1980s to preserve them from atmospheric pollution. It’s rather an unprepossessing spot for sculptures with such an illustrious history but at least it’s normally quite quiet, not crowded, and conducive, if you’re so minded, for a quick chat. All four trot or walk with animated stride, expressive faces, ears erect, open mouthed, carefully coiffured. Skin ruckles on their necks and where foreleg meets chest, veins bulge above the knees and nostrils. The chariot and rider they used to pull, many centuries ago and long lost, would have moved at a jaunty, perky pace. What stories they could tell, if they could speak. No one knows for sure when they were made: but we do know they were in Rome, possibly in the Forum or the Stadium of Domitian (now the Piazza Navona) at the height of her empire. In the 4th century AD the first Christian emperor, Constantine, took them to his new capital, Constantinople, where they stood above the Hippodrome, within sight of the imperial palace and, a couple of hundred years later, the construction of the Hagia Sophia. In 1204 they were stolen by the Venetians and placed on the façade of San Marco as trophies celebrating Venice’s naval and economic hegemony over the East. There they remained until Venice fell to Napoleon in 1796, whereupon he took them to Paris to sit on top of the Arc du Carrousel outside the Louvre. Twenty years later, after Waterloo, British engineers returned them to Venice. In September 1979, 'The Horses of San Marco' exhibition opened at @royalacademyarts in London. The exhibition presented sculptures and paintings relating to the origins of the horses of San Marco in Venice and made a strong impression on Flanagan. After his visit he began work on a sculpture of a horse and continued to use the horse as a subject, in a range of different media.
