The doors of the glasshouse time machine slide open to reveal clouds of smoke hovering in the canopies, sounds of distant dinosaur footsteps and cries, while cycads, ferns and other plants from these periods are celebrated! Our Community Outreach team have been working with community group @enterprise_19, who provide employment and work experience opportunities for young adults with learning disabilities. Their work will form part of the annual 'Houseplant Takeover' display at @rhswisley, which will have a Jurassic theme this year. Inspired by the plants they saw on a visit to Wisley, the group of young adults have been creating drawings that they will then screen print onto panels which will be displayed amongst the plants in the Glasshouse. Their work will be showcased at the garden in Surrey during the houseplant exhibition, which is due to take place from 3 February to 10 March. Visitors will be transported back to long, long ago in the “Plants Before Time” exhibition which will feature ferns and cycads alongside fossils, footprints and more. 🐚🐟🌿 RHS WISLEY: 'HOUSEPLANT TAKEOVER- DEEP SEA DIVE' 🌿🐟🐚 We popped to one of our favourite places, @rhswisley at the weekend. One of M's favourite places there is the Glass House. It always looks beautiful, but there's currently an exhibition on display there- 'The Houseplant Takeover- Deep Sea Dive', combining beautiful house plants with an under the sea theme. We really enjoyed having a wander round so thought I'd share for anyone interested - it runs until the 12th March. Introducing the Houseplant Takeover 2023 at Wisley, Deep Sea Dive! A fun creation of walking on the seabed where succulents and air plants create tapestries of colour and texture. I’m so proud of what the team have created, the more you look, the more you see! You enter the display through a rocky arch, to then pass a shipwreck covered in Rhipsalis species, to a boat on a sandy beach surrounded by cacti and succulents. Overhead a lighthouse is atop of a rock stack and a whale tail becomes visible in the waterfall pool! A diver, complete with Sansevieria leaf belt looks over the scene while fish and other sea life are peppered through the display. Those with a sharp eye for the unusual will notice many xMangave throughout the display (Agave x Manfreda) all bred by the talented @plantsplantsen. The colours and shapes really are something very impressive. We find Wisley is too cold for them outdoors in winter so they have become a glasshouse favourite. As you leave the display, look out for the breakwaters which are also full of succulents and if you pause you’ll hear the distant cry of seagulls! The props throughout the display are on kind loan from the Charlestown Shipwreck Museum in Cornwall. Congratulations to the Glasshouse Team, and other wider team members who traded their outdoor winter work for air plant artwork and succulent sculpting! Our Muslim Women’s Group Surrey Heath responded enthusiastically to a request from RHS Garden Wisley communities’ team, to create two wall hangings for their Deep Sea Dive Houseplant Takeover event.
