Rewinding it back to Greece, 2016. A tale of how Nisa & Relle met… How love for humanity can bring 2 humans together Can you believe our first trip together was to a refugee camp in Greece, back in 2016? These photos are from a volunteering trip run by our professor of International Human Rights during our law degree. This trip became insightful in so many ways & became a pivotal moment of Relle & I’s friendship… We arrived to offer a hand but left with painful testimonies from people who had suffered. Although we had tasks to help with the management of the refugee camp, we naturally became acquainted with the people living at the camp, many of whom were from Afghanistan. We would listen to their stories of their careers, their family homes & how they had to leave it all behind to survive. Can you imagine how severe circumstances have to be to WALK across continents with pregnant women, elderly relatives & small children?! These conversations were emotionally heavy & are stories that we carry in our hearts today. The experience humbled us, showed us how unkind our world is & made us realise how ungrateful we are for the small luxuries of our life. Sharing these experiences together really solidified our friendship & with our other friends too. Seeing one's love for humanity is priceless & something I’ve only come to realise now is a fundamental litmus test for a friendship. I know we mention a love for travel often but our greatest ambition is to travel & give back. Having the privilege to travel is also being able to connect with the underprivileged, the marginalised & the oppressed who have been unfairly treated by a world that has broken them yet they continue to thrive & tell their story. And that’s why we wanted to share this blast from the past so you can understand where this passion for humanity came from & how much we would love to do more of this work in the future. When was little, we moved a lot. I went to multiple elementary and middle schools. We had several addresses in the first few years in #Canada. I remember wanting a single home - one residence - that I would know was ours. That we could say we’ve lived in most of our lives. But as a first generation #settler, that was not my story. I had many residences at different points in my childhood. What helped was accessing #affordable and clean #shelter while we were getting off the ground. While my parents were pursuing re- #accreditation. I’m grateful to be living in a place and time that prioritizes #housing as a basic #humanright.
