When I heard that Judas Priest was coming to Reading, I just could not resist and went for it and let’s just say it was probably one of the best decisions of my life! Now, you guys might’ve remembered me going to see them for the first time two years back for their 50th anniversary but this “Invisible Shield” setlist was one for the ages! When I last saw them they were mostly playing their classic hits (which is fantastic) and I’m not complaining but this set was something else! I’m talking about them playing some of their heaviest and fastest songs off their whole catalog including off their latest album, Invincible Shield!! I mostly took pics this time around because I don’t have enough storage on my phone but I have a lifetime worth of memories with this one!! For those that don’t know, Judas Priest means a lot to me. These guys are my heroes and now, that I’ve seen the Metal Gods twice, I have to say… they’re still kicking it, if not more so than any other band out there. It’s a tie between them and Iron Maiden which leads me to this question? For all the metalheads, who was your first out of the two? I’ve started noticing that theirs two camps that are quite fanatical towards one band over the other. I’m a firm believer that if you’re a metal head, you have to listen to both Judas Priest and Iron Maiden but there’s this divide that I notice within the metal community where when you meet someone say that they like both bands; they tend to say either they started with Judas Priest or Iron Maiden and they just prefer one over the other? Now, I worship Iron Maiden, I can’t wait to see them this fall but I was always more of a Priest guy through and through. Again, I love Maiden but Priest has an edge over in the looks department with the leather outfits and sunglasses! Durante un torneo di briscola di parecchi anni fa, che mi vide protagonista di un onorevole terzo posto, constatai con ovvietà che l’età media della tenzone fosse circa di settant’anni. Pari, se non inferiore, all’età media dei tre membri storici dei tre membri originari dei Judas Priest attuali: Rob Halford, Ian Hill e Glenn Tipton. Che però hanno appena fatto uscire una bomba atomica di vinile heavy metal: Invincible shield. 2024. Reduci dal mezzo miracolo del disco Firepower, si poteva chiedere al prete di Giuda al massimo un onorevole disco di chiusura carriera. Invece, i difensori della fede heavy metal tirano fuori dal cappello il migliore album di metal classico (parere mio) degli ultimi quindici (venticinque?) anni. Panic attack apre le danze con delle tastiere che rimandano al periodo di Turbo, salvo poi virare su delle sonorità tipo Painkiller. E Halford? Sicuramente aiutato in studio, tira fuori una prova eccezionale. I suoi screaming acuminati come lame di rasoio si fondono alla chitarra oramai matura e perfettamente integrata di Faulkner e ci fanno veramente venire un attacco di panico. La locomotiva d’acciaio viaggia a un ritmo infernale anche nelle svisate del duo Faulkner/Tipton (presente nei crediti, nonostante la malattia lo abbia oramai provato), che attraversano tutta The serpent and the king, la cui unica piccola pecca è la poca originalità del ritornello. Per il resto, la band sembra avere preso la Delorean e compiuto un salto nel passato di trenta anni. Applausi! Tra l’altro, l’amalgama degli strumenti è resa fluida da una produzione modernissima e perfetta per il loro suono. Tuttavia, i rimandi agli anni settanta, ottanta e primi novanta sono dietro l’angolo in ogni anfratto. Come nella title track, che sembra uscita a livello di riffing e di assoli dal lato A di Painkiller (loro masterpiece assoluto). Devil in disguise, ottima, e Gates of hell, dal ritornello trascinante, chiudono in bellezza il primo disco. Judas Priest Turbo 1986 My original copy I bought in 1986. 🤘 I owe a lot of my musical tastes to my aunt (thank you!) who heavily influenced me as a kid. She introduced me to a lot of the music I love today, including Judas Priest @judaspriest @robhalfordlegacy In 1986 (I was 12, almost 13) I sat with her in her Ford Fiesta, waiting outside our local record store, waiting for it to open so I could spend my hard earned money on the new Judas Priest album, Turbo. I remember the anticipation of putting it in the tape deck in her car. Turbo Lover started playing and I didn't know what to think, it wasn't like Screaming for Vengeance or Defenders of the Faith (my favorite album at the time) it was so different. But then Locked In hit, and that was it, I was hooked. I listened to that tape all day, everyday for the next 5-6 months. May 9th 1986 I went to my first metal show with my aunt on Priest's Fuel for Life tour. Irvine Meadows in Irvine, California (RIP) I had just turned 13 in April. I was ready. I was so blown away. We had second row seats, a little to the right of center, with a great view of Rob, Glenn and Ian in the back. I remember Rob pointing at me (or in my general direction at least) and that was it, I had been baptized by metal. I've included pictures of the tour program and T-shirt. Not my pictures, had to find the images on the Internet, I have my tour program packed away, and my tour T-shirt is threadbare, as I wore it practically everyday for a year, I'm afraid it would fall apart if I touched it.
