NEW ALBUM OF THE YEAR ALERT! It's such a good vibe. That's always been the thing I've admired the most about Thom Yorke. He always manages to make every album he's a part of feel like it's own world, and Wall of Eyes is no different. It's a bit like Kid A in the sense that you can just let yourself become immersed in the sounds, but it's a lot more pleasant of an album than Kid A. Both projects are easily some of my favorites. Wall of Eyes also has some really nice instrumentation that make it easy to get into but still fun to peel back the layers of every instrumental. I really think this album captures its sound spectacularly. While the vocals can feel a bit pointless at times because of how in awe the instrumentals all leave you, that just means there's room for it to grow on me, which I'm sure it will as the year goes on. Ariana Grande has long been known as THE pop icon with the genre of her discography being mostly pop and R&B. Picking out just one album as a starter one is a tough choice and I almost went with Positions (2020) but this time I will give it to eternal sunshine (2024). After 4 years of repeating her old songs, this album release was such an emotional one for me since its announcement. I love how she took inspiration from the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and created such a poetic listening experience for the listeners. If I were Ari, I would choose imperfect for you as a single. Perhaps it’s just something about her vocal power that suits this type of vibe so perfectly. I love the vulnerability, the softness and the emotions she convey that just tie everything together. Inter Arma - New Heaven I was lucky enough to witness @interarmamusic playing their new album "New Heaven" in full @roadburnfest just before its official release. My friends and I were in awe. It begins with a distorted riff and continues with dark, disturbing yet complex and savoury sounds. And in the middle, suddenly harmonic guitars kick off, releasing all the tension that built all this time, and the album lifts off into new heights, a New Heaven. You can't label or assign a specific genre of music, every track is different, yet following the previous one perfectly. The band unravels and blends an awesome mix of Sludge, Black, Death, Prog, Jazz, Folk, Psych, Hardcore, Post-Hardcore, Postpunk, and so on... Awesome musicians. I think this is one the best and most promising bands around these days. What a set! What an album! ALBUM OF THE YEAR we yelled! And since then, @fabricegrimault , @synapstic82 and I still shout #AOTY !! to anyone we hear speaking about this absolute masterpiece. Belgrad waren seit ihrem fulminanten Debüt vor sieben Jahren „die ernsthafteste deutsche Band“ - und sind es mit dem zweiten Album zweifellos geblieben. Wobei man „schwermütig“, „melancholisch“ oder gar „düster“ noch ergänzen darf, denn das 75-minütige Werk ist, teilweise konzeptuell angelegt, eine ziemlich dystopische Erfahrung. Starke Lyrics mit mehr oder weniger deutlich politischem Bezug - schon im Prolog, gelesen von Jürgen Vogel, geht es um die Ermattung der Selbstgerechten - anmutige Melodien. Belgrad lassen sich Zeit, sie pflegen wieder eine sehr angenehme scheuklappenlose, sehr persönliche Beziehung zu Osteuropa und sind so in mancher Hinsicht weiterhin einzigartig. Es endet mit dem Tod (aber das tut es ja sowieso) - wer die Dunkelheit mag, wird dieses Album lieben. Und vielleicht hält ja der Titel auch ein wenig Hoffnung bereit, denn Lysis bezeichnet das Ende eines schweren Fiebers. Faith No More Album of the Year and CBCo Brewing Goldy Lager ⚜️⚜️⚜️ This is a very cohesive album, that represents the bands individual members and their connections. It flows without struggle, as if it is where they innately become FNM. Sure it’s not Angel Dust, or even King for a day … but really, what is. This would be an outstanding album by anyone else’s standards. Yes, yes they aren’t commercially played or lauded but decades on, they are without question incredibly influential. This album is darker. They wanted to explore trip hop and electronic assisted styles. You can hear that they were loving Massive Attack, Tricky and Portishead, and that’s what I love about them. They willingly, almost by instinct always needed to expand, digest, transform. Musicians. True musicians. Last Cup of Sorrow can play for .5 seconds and I’m in. Naked in Front of the Computer …. Sing it loud What’d I say. I’m empty. Aren’t we all. The simplicity of the intro to Ashes to Ashes, then that big big baritone voice kicks in. Yes please Mr Patton. . New Music Friday One album or two? One break up or a few? It really doesn’t matter. For those paying even the slightest bit of attention will already know that when Taylor does anything, she goes all in. So here we are. 31 (13 backwards of course) songs that cut deep and reveal she’s an even better songwriter than we all thought she was. Which takes some doing. Taken in its entirety TTPD is a monumental achievement in songwriting. There isn’t a weak song. Every one of those 31 adds a new perspective or shade to the pain, heartbreak, and anger that’s strewn across the stunning collection. Taylor has clearly heard herself on Folklore and Evermore as her singing on this record doubles down on those breakthroughs. It’s poetry to music, sure, the focus is very much on the words - we get it, but there’s some real genius in how she is communicating these words to us. She sings every part of every song expertly. Stating the bleeding obvious but Swift is operating on an entirely different level right now. Clocking in at over two hours there’s barely a bar of music where you don’t hear her. She is all over this. That amount of space is what I love the most about her. She’s proudly taken her place and determinedly fills that with songs, albums and music all of her own choosing. She is creatively free, open and honest - and in being so takes all those that have been listening and enjoying the ride so far with her. There’s fascinating, exciting and just plain brilliant references back to previous songs and characters - ghosts from her past back to haunt these new songs she wrote when she was at her lowest point. But with her back up against the wall she comes out fighting. Like the best in any business it’s not until they are tested that we see what truly lies beneath. And oh my, we see, here and feel it here. It’s a thrilling thing witnessing excellence like this. It is rare - probably once in a lifetime. It happened several times during the sixties, but y’know, that was the sixties. This isn’t. And yet here we are - it’s happening again but for the first time. A new Era. Enjoy.
